The whole accuracy of the tool is in the head sitting flat and tight against the factory edge — a head lifted at one end throws the blade off square and no careful stroke recovers it. Pin it with the off hand every placement. Reference factory, always. Square marks come off factory edges; cut edges are for hiding, not for referencing. Let the offset do its job. Because the head is stepped, the blade lies flat on the face and the knife can ride it without lifting the square — keep the blade pressed flat and the fence stays true. Brace beside the runout. When fencing a score, the boot goes against the blade beside the cut line, never under where the knife exits. Read it as aluminum. Anodized aluminum is light and rust-free but softer than steel — a blade dropped on a slab or levered as a pry bends, and a bent blade is a wandering fence forever; it is a layout instrument, treated like one. Why 48 inches instead of a normal ruler length?
Because a drywall sheet is 48 inches wide — the blade spans the full sheet in one placement, which is what lets it square, measure, and fence a cut all from a single hook on the factory edge.
What does "width equals size of standard outlet box" mean in practice?
The blade is 2" wide, the same width as a standard wall box, so when a box lands mid-sheet you strike both its vertical sides off the blade's own two edges in one placement — no separate template, no second measurement.
Can it cut angles?
It is a fixed square — no protractor head — so angles get marked point-to-point and the blade guides the knife as a straightedge; it carries the angle, it doesn't set it.
What is the offset head for?
The stepped head lets the blade lie flat on the board's face while the head registers the edge, so a knife rides the blade without the square rocking. (Hyde claims the offset's dimension; the reason is trade knowledge.)
Can I rip a full sheet lengthwise with it?
The blade runs out at four feet, so a longer rip is laid out square at both ends off the factory edge and snapped with a chalk line between them — the square starts it true, the chalk line carries it.
Is aluminum durable enough?
Anodized aluminum is light and rust-free and holds its graduations; treat it as the layout instrument it is — a blade bent by prying or a drop is a wandering fence for good.
