- Epoxies — its own family row bars it, and the bar is the whole difference from its steel spout twin: resin work through a spout or anywhere else is 46540 territory, never this.
- Genuinely stiff mud, texture at full body, anything the fingers bend around — the welded-steel tier exists for exactly the material that ignores a flail.
- Drums — both reach and mixing power end at the five-gallon class; the 28" 09059 handles anything deeper.
- Quarts and bench cans — the fingers' span and the 1–5-gallon rating make it the wrong shape for small cans, where the short rigid 43460 steers with a wrist.
- And prying, scraping, or fishing debris from a pail — nylon fingers are a rotor, not tongs.

How the pros run it
01
Low half of the band
500–1500 rpm is the printed envelope; mixing lives near its floor, and thin liquids at depth are the only case for the top. Deep fingers: the flail entrains air the moment tips break the surface — keep the head down. Swirl, don't park: a whip mixes by sweeping; slow cones and vertical strokes replace the rigid head's orbit. Fold-through exits: stopped drill, slow draw against the spout or surface, let the fingers shed inward. Feel for the bend: fingers deflecting around material instead of moving it = past the whip's authority; change tools, not speed. Wash flexing: work the fingers open under rinse water so the roots let go.
Asked before buying
BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
How does it get into a closed bucket?
Through the pour spout: the nylon fingers fold against the shaft to pass the opening, then splay open inside. Mixing "without exposing material by taking cover off" is Hyde's own claim for it (2a).
What speed should the drill run?
Hyde prints the band: 500–1500 rpm. Mix near the bottom of it; the top is for thin liquids with the head deep.
Will it mix joint compound?
Light knockdown of fresh, soft ready-mix and incremental thinning, yes (2c, 2d). Stiff mud, no — when the fingers bend around the material instead of moving it, the pail belongs to a steel Mudslinger.
Epoxy?
No — "Not for use with epoxies" is on its family row. The spout-capable epoxy tool is the 46540; that single line is the biggest difference between the twins.
Grout — really?
On its own catalog row, yes (2e): water-first from powder, low rpm, honor the slake-and-remix schedule, wash immediately.
Concrete is listed — should I use it to mix concrete?
It is listed for concrete, but the flexible fingers are honestly suited to thin-to-medium material. Treat the concrete listing as the upper limit, not the everyday use — heavy mixes want a rigid steel mixer and a low-rpm 1/2" drill.
Why nylon instead of steel?
Fold-through spout access, gentler action on plastic pails, tolerance of odd containers, and a soft blending action. The trade-off is power in stiff material — which is exactly where the Mudslinger mixers take over.
