Hold it shallow
the blade works at a low angle to the wall, edge leading, like a squeegee on glass — steepening toward perpendicular turns spreading into scraping. Strokes overlap, always: on the strip and on the seam, gaps are where air stays. Watch in raking light: a work lamp held oblique to the wall shows every remaining pocket as shadow; flat light hides them until the paste dries. Keep the edge perfect: a nick in a polypropylene edge tracks a line down every subsequent stroke on vinyl — retire or dress a damaged edge rather than working around it (class knowledge). Keep it clean in use: paste dried on the blade telegraphs as streaks; rinse as you go, and the material's indifference to water makes end-of-day care a running of the tap.

Is it safe on delicate or embossed paper?
No claim addresses any paper type — and class practice says no: fragile stock takes a smoothing brush. Test a scrap when in doubt.
Can it fix a bubble the paper dried around?
Not by pressing — a dried blister is a pinhole-and-press repair. The smoother's bubble work happens while the paste is open, chasing air to the nearest edge.
Do I still need a seam roller?
The traditional kit uses one; this store's line doesn't carry one . Light smoother strokes along the seam are the in-store stand-in.
Why plastic instead of a brush?
For vinyls and non-wovens: firmer pressure, faster setting, a flatter paste bed. The brush survives for the papers plastic punishes.
Steel or plastic as the knife's trim guide?
Both work; plastic won't mark the face, steel draws a thinner line. The smoother usually wins by being already in your hand.
