Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • Stiff Blade: Designed for effective scraping of paint and putty.
  • High-Quality Stainless Steel Blade: Hardened for added durability and long-lasting performance. Rust-Resistant
  • Overmold Comfort Grip: Provides a secure and comfortable hold during use.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Filling and finishing.
  • A stiff blade cannot conform to a wall, so it leaves ridges at the corners ("tram-lines") and drags compound out of shallow depressions instead of wiping them flush — applying spackle or glazing with it is using the wrong half of the family.
  • Fill with the flexible knives (06108 one width up in flex, or the 2" 06228).
  • It is also not a struck demolition tool: the Hammer Head is for resetting fasteners, and you should never hammer the blade's spine along a glazing rabbet.
  • For broad, flat paint fields where a wider pass saves strokes, step up to the 2" stiff (06308); for shave-scraping specks flat to a finished surface without corner gouging, a chisel-ground blade (the Black & Silver 01140) beats this square-ground edge.

How the pros run it

01

Angle is the rule

low, 15–30° — the blade should shear material off the surface, not chisel into it. Direction: push for power (walls), pull for control (near trim and edges you don't want to damage). Grip: full fist for power scraping, index finger along the spine for controlled passes; the overmold makes the repetitive work easier on the hand. Let stiffness carry the force: a stiff blade keeps steady shear on the failure where a flexible one would skip and chatter — that steadiness is the whole reason to hold a stiff blade for removal. Stainless-specific care: the practical advantage is behavioral — because removal work meets water, paste, and stripper, the stainless blade lets you finish the job and wipe once, with no drying-and-oiling ritual. The cost is that stainless hones back to a keen edge less readily than carbon; dress the edge square with a fine file when it dents so it doesn't telegraph flaws into a surface, and accept that a dedicated dry-scraping specialist might still prefer carbon (§5). Keep the overmold out of solvent soaks.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Apply or scrape?
Scrape — it's a stiff removal blade. Fill with the flexible 06108/06228.
Why stainless on a scraper?
Because removal is wet work — paste, stripper, rinse sit on the blade, and stainless wipes clean with no rust bloom or drying ritual. (§2b)
Difference from the 2" (06308)?
Width — 1-1/2" concentrates force for stubborn spots; 2" clears broad fields faster. (§5)
What's the Hammer Head for?
Resetting popped fasteners and dimpling holes when a repair needs scraping and setting. (§2c)
Can I use it on lead paint?
Only under lead-safe practice — assume pre-1978 paint is lead, contain and wet the work, follow EPA RRP on pro jobs. (§2a)
Will it rust?
No — stainless. That's the reason to pick it over the carbon 02150 for wet work.
