CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • High Carbon Steel Blade: Individually ground, polished, and clear-coated for superior durability and performance.
  • Solvent-Resistant Hardwood Handle: Provides a sturdy, comfortable grip and withstands various solvents.
  • Flexible Blade: Ideal for applying, smoothing, and scraping compounds.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Removal, scraping, and prying.
  • A flexible blade cannot transmit a hard push to its edge — asked to pop a paint blister, hack out old glazing, or dig a caulk bead, it bows and folds where a stiff blade would lift.
  • Removal is the stiff family's job — in this same series and width, that is the 07060.
  • It is also not a wide fill tool: at 1-1/4" it is wrong for leveling a broad patch or spreading filler over a large face, where a 1-1/2" (07110) or wider levels in half the strokes and the narrow blade just leaves a washboard of passes.
  • And it is not the abuse tool a jobsite bucket knife is — the clear-coated carbon and hardwood are a finishing-bench build, not the tool to pry a lid or scrape a concrete slab with; the nylon-handled Black & Silver knives take that punishment better.

How the pros run it

01

Let the blade bow

a flexible knife works by flexing — press the compound in and drag nearly flat so the bow spreads the wipe and feathers the edges. Narrow follows contour: 1-1/4" is chosen precisely to ride profiles and enter rabbets; use that, and don't ask it to level a broad flat where a wider blade belongs. Keen carbon cuts clean: hone the clear-coated high-carbon edge square and slightly keen with a mill file when it dulls — a crisp edge cuts a crisp glazing bevel and a clean filler strike-off. The clear-coat is not immunity: it protects the faces, but wipe the blade dry after water-based compound anyway, because carbon under a scratch will rust. Solvent belongs here: the hardwood handle is made for the lacquer-thinner bench — this is where the tool wants to live.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Fill or scrape?
Fill — it flexes to bed glass, press filler, and wipe smooth. Scraping is the stiff sibling's job (07060).
Why the narrow 1-1/4" width?
To enter muntin rabbets and follow tight trim profiles that a 1-1/2" blade rides over.
Why a hardwood handle instead of plastic?
It survives the lacquer-thinner and stripper of a finishing bench, where a soft overmold grip would not — and it's the heritage build.
Will the carbon blade rust?
It is clear-coated to resist it, but wipe it dry after water-based compound anyway — the coat protects the faces, not a scratch or the edge.
Can I glaze a window with it?
Yes — after the old putty is removed with a stiff blade. For the narrowest divided lights, step to the 3/4" (02005).
07010 or the 1-1/2" 07110?
Tight trim, muntins, fine furniture → 07010; general glazing and patching → 07110.
