  • Even at 5 inches the blade is too narrow to feather a seam's crown out to invisibility — that is 8"–12" work, where the blade ends ride flat wall on both sides of the joint while the middle screeds.
  • Run a 5" across a wide fill and it prints tram-lines at the corners.
  • It is also not the final feather-to-zero blade (that is the extra-flexible tier) or a demolition scraper.
  • The 5" is a tape-and-second-coat, corner, and patch width — the middle of the hand-knife sequence, not the leveller.

Wipe control

the extra width rewards a smooth, unhurried pull — let the blade carry the mud and meter the squeeze-out through even pressure rather than speed. Angle: low, to screed not gouge. The Hammer Head takes a tap, not a swing. The carbon ritual: wash and dry the blade the moment it is idle; a carbon blade left wet blooms rust that stains the next coat and pits the worn edge, while a wiped, lightly-oiled one stays bright for years. Edge: dress dents square with a mill file so the wider blade lays flat and reads no lines into the coat.

Why choose 5" over 4" or 6"?
More wipe per pass than a 4" without the floppy reach of a 6" in corners — a common finisher's-preference tape and second-coat width. (See §1, §2a.)
What's the Hammer Head® for?
Setting a popped fastener below flush with the steel butt, mid-coat, without switching tools. (See §2c.)
How is it different from the 06779 and 06778 at 5"?
This is carbon (keen edge, rusts, must be dried) with a Hammer Head; the 06779 is one-piece stainless (hose-off); the 06778 is cushioned double-hollow-ground stainless. (See §5.)
Can it do fill coats?
No — 5" is still a tape/second-coat width; fill and skim need 8"–12". (See §4.)
Does it rust?
Yes if left wet — carbon. Wash and dry every time. (See §3.)
