Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not a cutting tool by itself — with no blade it does nothing; it is the seat, not the edge.
  • Not maximum-leverage or reaching work — its short 4-1/2" body is the wrong choice when the job wants a long grip or reach into the work; that is the 5-1/4" handle.
  • Not a seat for the wider mill blades — it is cataloged for 5/16" and 3/8" blades; the 1/2"-and-up flat-grind mill blades mount in the metal handles, not this.
  • Not a personal-knife handle — the riveted trade knives in this line come with their own hardwood handles and are not part of the extension system.

How the pros run it

01

Set the extension before you cut, not during

Fix the blade at the length the cut wants and lock it (mechanism per Hyde ); a blade that creeps out under load ruins the cut and is a hazard. Let the flats orient you. Register the flat against your fingers so the edge's direction is known by feel — the point of a flat-sided handle. Match blade to work, handle to hand. The handle does not change what the blade cuts; it changes how the tool sits in the hand — pick the 4-1/2" body for close, controlled work. Care for the wood. A hardwood station handle lasts years if it is kept dry and not used as a pry lever; the abuse that breaks handles is levering on a seated blade.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What does this handle do?
It holds an extension (mill) blade at a cutting station. The blade is the consumable; the handle stays for years. You mount a 5/16" or 3/8" blade, set its extension, and cut.
How long is it, and how is that different from the others?
4-1/2" — the shortest of the four wood handles, for close control and smaller hands. The others run 4-3/4" and 5-1/4".
Which blades fit?
Any 5/16" or 3/8" mill blade — every extension blade in this line.
How is the blade held in?
Not documented for the wood handles. The metal handles use set screws; we won't state the wood handles' mechanism until Hyde confirms it.
What does "2SR" mean?
The pattern code is undocumented in the catalog and packet; we don't invent a meaning.
