Not light, conformable stock — springy garment-weight material wants the flexing 20-gauge #2 (57060), not this stiff blade.
Not hot or abrasive high-rate cutting — friction heat softens and rounds a carbon edge, and that failure mode is what the HSS blades (57200 / 6522M 57230) exist to beat.
Not contour work — swept, curved cut lines want the curve point extension blade (57320).
Not a handheld knife — a riveted one-owner knife is the bevel point knife (60300); this is a station consumable that needs a handle.
Not a pry or heavy side-load tool — a mounted blade levered sideways is asking to snap at the handle line.
The distance the blade projects from the handle tunes reach and effective stiffness; a stiff 18-gauge blade run at a moderate extension is a very controlled station cutter, while a long extension adds reach at some cost in rigidity (authored cantilever reasoning, not a Hyde claim). Use the stiffness. This blade's advantage is that it doesn't give — press it into dense stock and it stays on the line; don't waste it on light, springy material the 20-gauge follows better. Honing. High-carbon steel re-takes a keen edge on a stone; hone the bevel, strop the burr, extend the blade as it wears, replace it when it's spent. Rust. Carbon steel — wipe dry after wet or adhesive cutting; a station blade left damp blooms rust overnight.

57090 or 57060?
Gauge. The 57090 is .049"/18-gauge and stiff for dense stock; the 57060 is .035"/20-gauge and flexes for light stock. Same pattern and size otherwise.
What is the difference between the 57090 (#2) and the 57170 (BG349)?
On the record, only the pattern designation — the listed dimensions are identical (4-3/4" × 3/8" × .049") and no source resolves a physical difference . Order the #2 as standard; order the BG349 when your spec calls for it. We don't invent a distinction that isn't documented.
Does it include a handle?
No — blade only. It mounts in a flat-sided wood extension handle (57620/57630/57660/57680), all of which take its 3/8" width.
When should I move to HSS?
When carbon blades come back with rounded, heat-softened edges from fast or abrasive cutting — that is what the HSS 57200 is for. For ordinary dense-stock cutting, this carbon blade is the default.
Rust?
Carbon steel — wipe dry after wet or adhesive work and hone on a stone.
