Proceed only when a current validated instruction covers the exact handle model, exact blade model or pattern, and observed physical configuration, and the employer has designated a competent person for the task. If that instruction cannot be produced, the physical fit does not match it, or any retention detail remains ambiguous, stop, contain the blade, quarantine the pairing, and obtain Hyde or employer engineering direction.
Price, availability, production rate, replacement interval, and facility policy belong to live systems and are never stated here.
Job: replace a removed or spent extension blade with a fresh, identified blade in one of Hyde's four registered wood handles; preserve model and pattern identity; prove that the blade and handle are an authorized pair; use the validated mounting procedure rather than inference; inspect and verify the assembly; and return it to service only through the station's release process.
No worker guesses at a hidden retention system, copies a method from a metal handle, forces a merely width-matched blade into wood, or uses a live cutting trial to discover whether the blade is secure.
Time: not a production standard. A familiar exchange may be brief after the exact pairing, procedure, change station, and records are established.
Difficulty: procedural and evidence-sensitive. Handling a small blade is simple; proving compatibility, controlling sharp edges and machine energy, preserving the handle, and validating retention are the skilled parts.

Their point shapes, gauges, steels, and some dimensions differ; two entries also carry unresolved dimension conflicts. A model number in this paragraph is an example, not proof that a particular blade fits a particular physical handle. The validated pairing record still controls.
None of those specifications is supplied by the held Hyde record.
The catalog family statement — “flat-sided hardwood handles for 5/16" and 3/8" mill blades” — establishes a real class boundary. A blade outside those nominal widths is not admitted to this wood-handle family. A blade inside either width has passed only the first check.
Nominal width does not prove:
that the blade's actual thickness, retained-end shape, surface condition, or pattern is accepted by the handle;
which end enters the handle or which face must orient to a handle datum;
how deeply the blade seats or how much edge may remain exposed;
whether the physical handle is fixed, adjustable, reusable after a particular wear condition, or complete as found;
what retains the blade, what components belong to that retention system, or how they are serviced;
that 57660 and 57680 are interchangeable merely because both are 4-3/4" long;
that a procedure written for a neighboring metal handle applies to wood.
Treat the system as an evidence chain:
If any term is missing, the answer is HOLD, not “make it fit.”
Put the change in the correct control lane

That does not waive the pairing, instruction, blade-handling, inspection, or competent-person gates.
Move the entire identified assembly to the designated change station. Do not carry a loose blade in a pocket, apron, open hand, or mixed tool tray. Keep the blade in its package or approved carrier until the change zone is ready.
Attached tool or exposure to machine hazards
If the handle remains attached to equipment, changing it requires reaching into a point of operation, a guard must be removed or bypassed, or unexpected movement or stored energy could injure someone, stop and use the machine-specific energy-control procedure. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 covers servicing and maintenance where unexpected energization, startup, or stored-energy release can cause injury. It also addresses tool changes during normal production and permits the minor-servicing exception only when its conditions are met and alternative measures provide effective protection. This guide does not decide that exception for a facility.
Only the employer's authorized employee performs required shutdown, isolation, lockout/tagout, stored-energy control, and verification. A stop button, emergency stop, software command, selector, interlock, or zero-speed display is not by itself an energy-isolating device.
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 separately requires protection from point-of-operation, rotating-part, nip-point, and similar machine hazards. A long handle, a short blade projection, a practiced operator, or a glove does not replace required guarding.
Stop if the written energy-control or guarding arrangement does not cover the exact change state. Missing plant procedure cannot be repaired with tool familiarity.
Put these five items together at the change station:
Handle identity. Record 57620, 57630, 57660, or 57680 from the controlled station record, packaging, purchase record, or another authoritative identifier. Do not identify an unmarked wood handle by length and appearance alone.
Do not reduce the record to “3/8 blade.”
A general catalog family sentence can support the width screen but cannot supply the missing retention procedure.
Physical-match evidence. The competent person compares the actual handle, blade, and any retention components with the instruction's images, parts list, dimensions, revision marks, and condition criteria. Similarity is not identity.
Release criteria. Have the defined inspection, retention-verification, guard-restoration, restart, and first-piece checks ready before assembly begins.
Prepare one clean, edge-controlled change zone
Clear unrelated blades, fasteners, scraps, rags, and tools. Use one tray for one handle and one incoming blade so model identity and small components cannot cross-mix. Provide enough light to see cracks, corrosion, splits, deformation, residue, and seating-area damage without touching an edge.
Select hand protection through the employer's task hazard assessment. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.138 requires suitable hand protection where hands face hazards such as severe cuts, lacerations, abrasions, or punctures, and requires selection based on the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards. That is not a universal command to wear a particular glove: the employer must also account for entanglement and the machine state. Use the approved transfer tool or carrier; never test sharpness or trace a blade edge with a finger, gloved or bare.
Set the disposal and quarantine routes before the blade is exposed. “Put it aside for later” is not containment. A dropped blade, mixed blade, missing fragment, or unknown part immediately changes the job from routine exchange to controlled recovery.
Inspect the handle and incoming blade as separate components
model identity and agreement with the station record;
wood body for cracks, splits, crushing, swelling, scorching, contamination, looseness, or unauthorized alteration;
the blade-entry and seating region for embedded debris, corrosion, damage, deformation, or a foreign object;
every visible retention component for correct identity, presence, condition, and relationship to the handle;
evidence of glue, tape, wire, improvised wedges, shims, drilled holes, substituted fasteners, peening, or other unapproved repair;
prior blade movement, fretting, gouging, or witness marks inconsistent with the validated setup.
Do not probe a hidden cavity, pry the wood open, dress a seating face, lubricate, soak, heat, or “tighten everything” unless the exact instruction authorizes that action. An undocumented modification is a quarantine condition.
Fresh blade
Keep the edge contained while checking:
exact model and pattern against the package and station specification;
nominal width against the 5/16"/3/8" family boundary and every additional pairing criterion;
retained end and blade body for bend, bow, twist, burr, deep score, corrosion, contamination, or handling damage;
working end for chip, crack-like line, blunt or damaged point, rolled edge, or missing material;
any unresolved model fact that matters to the pairing.
“Fresh” means not previously issued into service under the plant's record; it does not mean automatically straight, clean, compatible, or accepted.
Mount only by the validated instruction
This guide intentionally does not provide hand placement, insertion direction, seating depth, projection, retention sequence, tool size, force, torque, or a substitute test.
Use this as the job-control sequence around that instruction:
Read the instruction against the parts in hand. Confirm the revision applies to the exact handle, blade, and observed retention system. Stop on any mismatch.
Record the as-found state. Before changing anything, document prior blade movement, damaged parts, residue, unauthorized repairs, or an unexplained configuration. Do not erase failure evidence through cleaning or added force.
Unload the old blade under the authorized sequence, if one remains installed. Preserve its identity and contain it immediately. A missing point or fragment triggers the facility's missing-fragment search; a shifted blade triggers retention-system diagnosis.
Prepare only as directed. Perform only the cleaning, component replacement, surface preparation, and tool use the instruction permits. No generic solvent, abrasive, oil, adhesive, filler, or wood repair is authorized here.
Orient and seat the fresh blade exactly as directed. A blade that will not reach the instruction's datum with the specified method is not “close enough.” Withdraw it safely, contain it, and hold the pair for review.
Apply the documented retention method. Use every specified component in the stated order and condition.
Perform the documented retention verification. Use the prescribed safe method. Never pull, twist, wiggle, or strike the exposed edge by hand to invent a test.
Record the installed state. Capture handle model, blade model/pattern, instruction revision, person, date/time, disposition of the old blade, and verification result.
The held record does not establish how these wood handles adjust blade projection — or even enough mechanism detail to describe an adjustment safely. Do not copy the neighboring metal handles' “slotted set screws for positive blade length adjustment” sentence onto 57620, 57630, 57660, or 57680.
If the exact validated instruction defines an adjustable projection, use its datum, limits, and verification. If it defines a fixed seat, honor the fixed seat. If it does not define the position, stop. Do not choose projection by eye, expose “about an inch,” bury the blade until it feels tight, or infer an allowable setting from another handle.
Verify and release without using production as the retention test
Before release, the competent person confirms:
blade and handle identities match the authorized pair;
the physical assembly matches the instruction;
the blade reaches the specified seat or datum without forced fit;
every required retention component is present and accepted;
the prescribed retention verification passed;
the handle, blade body, working edge, and exposed projection meet the written criteria;
tools, fragments, packaging, and removed parts are accounted for;
guards and protective devices are restored and verified;
the change record is complete.
Where lockout/tagout applies, restart follows the employer's machine-specific procedure, including inspection of the work area, removal of nonessential items, confirmation that components are operationally intact, clearing employees, authorized removal of controls, and required notification. Hands and improvised test material stay out of the danger zone.
Run the station's defined no-load or first-piece check only after formal release and guarding. The acceptance sample, speed, feed, stock, cut-quality criteria, and safe observation position come from the station process, not this guide. Stop immediately on blade movement, an abnormal sound, vibration, chatter, wandering, unexpected force, handle damage, guard contact, or a first-piece failure. Preserve the as-found state for diagnosis rather than adding retention force and trying again.

handle, retention-system, and fresh-blade inspection results;
installation and retention-verification result;
guard/restoration and restart authorization;
competent person and observed time;
any HOLD, quarantine reference, mismatch, or engineering question.
That record is the feedback loop. Repeated movement points toward the pairing, handle, retention system, service method, or station load. Repeated chipped points can indicate impact, side load, or hard inclusions. Repeated rounding may support a controlled steel or pattern review. None of those diagnoses is settled by simply fitting another blade.
Choosing among the four registered handles
The held product facts support only these selection statements:
57630 / 2SR — 4-1/2": shortest.
57660 / 12LR — 4-3/4": middle length.
57680 / 2L — 4-3/4": middle length; no supported functional distinction from 57660.
57620 / 1R — 5-1/4": longest.
Length can inform a competent station ergonomic evaluation, but this guide does not convert length into a universal promise of control, leverage, reach, productivity, or reduced fatigue. The pattern codes are unexpanded.
History footnote
The extension-blade system reflects an old factory-economics split: the handle is station equipment while the sharpened blade is the wearing component. Pattern numbers persist because a cutting room needs repeatable reorders more than new naming.
