What makes this different from a normal carbon extension blade?
The steel. HSS holds its hardness at temperatures that soften carbon steel, so it keeps a working edge through friction heat. Everything else about the cutting job is the same.
When should I switch to HSS?
When you can measure carbon blades coming back rounded rather than nicked, needing re-honing several times a shift, or when the stock comes off the machine warm. If carbon isn't overheating, stay on carbon — it's cheaper and hones keener.
What size is it?
Honestly unsettled. The fact sheet says 4-3/4" × 3/8" × .049" (18-gauge); the printed catalog says 4-3/4" × 5/16" × .035" (20-gauge). We print both and won't guess. Verify with Hyde IBS before relying on a spec.
Which handle does it take?
Any of the line's four flat-sided wood handles (5/16" and 3/8" mill-blade fit).
Can I hone it on my usual stone?
Yes, but it's harder than carbon, so it cuts slower on the stone — a diamond hone helps. You'll do it much less often, which is the whole point.
