How to Slit and Trim Light Stock at a Cutting Station
“Light stock” here is not a numeric rating. It means stock that passes the same-material trial below without uncontrolled blade deflection, bunching, tearing, excessive force, or unacceptable edge damage. This guide supplies no missing number.

Job: make repeatable straight slits, straight or gently steered trims, and edge cleanups in light, conformable sheet at a controlled manual cutting station.
Result: the retained material matches the job’s own line, width, and edge-quality requirements; the stock is not stretched or marked by the process; the blade stays controlled in its inspected handle; and the station record preserves the material, setup, blade identity, stop conditions, and inspection result needed to repeat the cut.
Time: set by the material trial, cut length, handling method, inspection requirement, and number of repetitions. No universal time per cut or station rate is supported.
Difficulty: moderate. Light stock often looks easy to sever, but it can pucker, crawl, stretch, fold, or follow a dull edge. The skill is controlling the material without putting a hand in the run-out and using the 20-gauge blade’s flexibility without asking it to hold a line that belongs to a stiffer or guided process.
The exact tools from this catalog:
Hyde lists it as a 4-3/4" × 3/8" × .035" high-carbon-steel extension blade, hardened, tempered, ground, and honed. It is a blade only, not a complete knife. Its documented 20-gauge thickness makes it the light, flexible member beside the otherwise matching 18-gauge 57090.
Hyde catalogs all four for 5/16" and 3/8" mill blades. Choose length for the actual hand and clearance. Use only the physical handle’s verified plant-approved blade-setting procedure.
Everything else: the current work instruction or drawing; same-lot scrap; a removable marking method approved for the material; a clean, stable, sacrificial cutting surface; a straightedge or guide only if the plant has approved it for knife contact and hand clearance; weights, low-profile clamps, or a material guide positioned outside the blade path; raking light; an edge-inspection aid appropriate to the job; a protected tool rest; an approved sharpening and burr-removal system; a blade container or controlled disposal route; and the PPE selected by the employer’s hazard assessment.
Before you cut: establish what the station is authorized to do
Separate the hand-cutting station from the machine
In this guide, a cutting station is a controlled place where an operator uses the 57060 in a compatible hand handle. The word “station” does not turn this extension blade into a powered-machine component, approve a fixed exposed-blade fixture, or authorize cutting stock while it is being pulled by rolls, a conveyor, a sewing machine, or another drive.
If the material moves under power, if a fixed blade is proposed, if hands would enter a machine danger zone, or if the task is clearing a wrap or jam, stop. OSHA requires machine guarding against hazards including points of operation and rotating parts, and its lockout/tagout standard covers servicing where unexpected energization or stored energy could injure a worker (OSHA — Machine Guarding; OSHA — Control of Hazardous Energy). A Hyde blade selection page cannot approve that system.
Name the owner of the station’s work instruction, hazard assessment, material specification, quality standard, blade-change method, sharpening route, and stop-work decision. If those owners or instructions do not exist, this page can help design a trial, but the station is not released for production.
Freeze the cut and the retained side
Identify exactly what the part must become:
Is this a long slit that separates one sheet into lanes, a trim that removes an edge allowance, or a short cleanup cut?
Does the line represent the finished edge, the center of a kerf, a seam allowance, or a later-process allowance?
Which side is retained, and which side is waste?
Does the material have a face, grain, nap, stretch direction, coating, adhesive side, warp/weft direction, or matched orientation?
What drawing, template, sample, mating part, or gauge accepts the result?
What edge conditions are disqualifying: fuzz, scallop, compression, whitening, delamination, stretch, hook, incomplete severing, or contamination?
Mark retained and waste sides at several places. Record the material identity and lot before proving the setup. “Textile,” “leather,” and “light synthetic” are families, not cutting specifications; two visually similar lots may drag or stretch differently.
Do not stack plies because the first one cuts easily. Hyde states no ply capacity, and an unseen lower ply can shift, remain bridged, or be trimmed to a different line. A separately engineered and qualified multi-ply process is outside this guide.
Decide whether 20-gauge flexibility helps or defeats the line
The 57060 and 57090 share the same documented #2 bevel-point pattern and 4-3/4" × 3/8" plan dimensions. Their difference is thickness: .035"/20 gauge for 57060, .049"/18 gauge for 57090.
Choose 57060 only when the work benefits from a blade that can follow light, conformable stock and the scrap proof shows it still holds the required line. Reject it for this setup when the stock pushes it sideways, the edge bows away from the guide, the operator must increase extension or grip force until control is lost, or the cut requires a rigid line under substantial pressure. Those are behavioral stop conditions, not a hidden thickness threshold.
Do not solve hot or abrasive edge loss by pressing harder. The line assigns HSS patterns to cutting where heat or abrasion rounds carbon edges, but this row registers only 57060. A change of steel, gauge, point pattern, or process requires its own station review; it is not an informal substitution inside this guide.
Choose and inspect the handle without inventing its mechanism
Choose among the four linked 576xx handles by hand fit and working clearance:
57630 is the shortest documented option at 4-1/2", for the closest grip.
57620 is the longest at 5-1/4", for the fullest grip and more reach.
57660 and 57680 are both 4-3/4". Their codes, 12LR and 2L, are not explained in the catalog.
Inspect the physical handle for cracks, splits, looseness, contamination, altered parts, and a damaged blade seat. Fit and retain the 57060 only by the supplied instruction or a plant procedure verified for that exact handle. This guide therefore gives no insertion depth, tightening direction, torque, wedge material, adhesive, or improvised repair.
After mounting, apply a light controlled load on scrap with hands outside the projected path. The blade must not creep, rotate, rock, or withdraw. Any movement means stop, quarantine the assembly, and resolve the actual retention system.
Prepare the edge, support, and material path
Inspect the point and full working edge under raking light. Reject a bent blade, chipped or rolled point, crack, heavy corrosion, or edge whose geometry has been changed by uneven grinding. Remove adhesive or residue with the shop-approved method, then dry the high-carbon blade.
Cover the cutting surface with clean sacrificial material that allows full severing without striking metal, glass, stone, fasteners, bench grit, or old hardened adhesive. Support the retained sheet and waste for the entire cut. A hanging waste strip changes tension as it grows; a draped retained panel can pull the line away from the blade.
Arrange the station so the cut travels through a clear zone:
The off hand flattens or guides from beside or behind the active edge, never in front of its run-out.
Clamps, weights, guides, labels, and table joints remain outside the blade and handle path.
Released waste has somewhere to fall or lie without wrapping the hand or pulling the retained edge.
The operator can stop and reset posture without laying down an exposed edge in the material flow.
The tool rest protects the edge and prevents the handle from being swept off the bench.
OSHA’s knife guidance emphasizes using the right knife, cutting away from the body, keeping fingers out of the cutting line, and placing a knife on a secure surface when interrupted (OSHA — Knives and Cuts). The employer’s hazard assessment still decides PPE; this guide does not name a glove material, cut rating, cuff, apron, or replacement interval for an unassessed station.
Prove the complete setup on same-lot scrap
Reproduce the intended material, lot, face and orientation, support, marking, handle, blade projection, edge condition, grip, guide, and inspection method. Include the longest uninterrupted section and the hardest transition expected in the real work.
Begin slowly. A passing trial must:
start and track without a stab, uncontrolled skip, or sideways buckle;
sever cleanly with controlled slicing force rather than a press or pry;
keep the blade stable in the handle;
keep both hands and the body outside the possible path;
leave the retained stock flat and unstretched after it is released;
meet the job’s own line and edge-quality criteria;
produce waste that clears without pulling the cut;
leave no unacceptable face marks, fuzz, tear, whitening, delamination, or underside bridge; and
repeat across multiple trials without rising force or drift.
Record the setup that passed. If no setup passes, choose another controlled tool or process. Do not convert the failed trial into an invented 57060 capacity.
Make the slit or trim
Establish a clean edge start
The 57060 has a bevel point: an angled working point followed by a straight run of edge. For this job, begin from an exposed stock edge or an already approved opening and let the point enter the waste side of the marked line. Set the blade low enough to slice, not upright enough to spear.
Do not use 57060 to improvise a plunge start in the middle of a sheet. The line assigns true internal plunge-start work to a lance-point pattern, and no source gives 57060 a specific internal-cutout capacity.
Make the first short stroke in waste, approach the line, and confirm the material is neither being pushed ahead nor drawn sideways. A bad entry propagates through a long slit; stop early enough that the scrap or waste can absorb the correction.
Slit a long run with controlled, overlapping strokes
For a hand-guided slit, place the line in the operator’s strongest safe cutting zone. Use a low slicing presentation and draw through a length that remains controlled. Unload the edge before posture, wrist angle, visibility, or support deteriorates. Reset the stock and overlap the next stroke slightly into the completed cut so no bridge remains.
The useful rhythm is position, flatten, slice, unload, clear, inspect, reset. It is not a speed specification. A production target cannot overrule the first sign of blade deflection, material bunching, mounting movement, or hand encroachment.
On soft textile or draping sheet, support immediately beside the line without stretching it. Let the edge sever the fibers; pulling the material against the blade can lengthen the cut side and shorten the retained side. On light leather or coated stock, watch the face and cut edge for drag marks, coating fracture, or delamination. On tacky synthetics, stop to clear residue when it changes the feel; do not add force to a loaded edge.
If an approved straight guide is used, prove that its edge cannot be shaved, that the blade does not ride under it, and that the guide leaves safe hand clearance. Keep the blade in light contact only if the verified method calls for it. A guide is not permission to press sideways on a 20-gauge blade.
Trim a narrow edge allowance without pulling the waste
For a trim, keep the retained panel fully supported and put the narrow allowance on the waste side. Start where the waste can separate freely. Make controlled slicing strokes with the line visible ahead of the working edge.
Let the waste fall away. Do not pull it forward to “help” the blade: tension can run the cut ahead, curl the retained edge, or draw a flexible blade off line. If a long strip accumulates, stop the blade, set it safely in the protected rest, and clear the strip. If the job permits relief cuts, make them only in waste and stop short of the finished line.
At an endpoint, unload before the mark. If two cuts must meet, approach from both directions and join them in waste rather than driving the point through the finish line. Cut any underside bridge while the work remains flat; never tear the final fibers.
Manage gentle direction changes honestly
The straight bevel edge can steer through a broad, gentle change when the scrap proof supports it, but this is not the line’s contour blade. Rotate the work so each short stroke is locally tangent to the line. Never twist a buried 57060 point to force a turn; side load can bow the thin blade and hook the retained edge.
When the required path makes the straight edge bridge the curve, the point dig, or the blade twist, stop. The 57320 curve-point extension blade is the line’s registered contour specialist, but changing to it belongs to the separate contour-trimming job and station review.
Hold the station state across repeated parts
On repeat work, preserve the proven variables:
same material identity, orientation, and allowed condition;
same approved pattern, line, guide, support, and waste direction;
same 57060 model and inspected handle;
same blade projection and verified retention state;
same start zone, stroke direction, operator position, and inspection points;
same protected rest, residue-clearing method, and blade-change route.
Check the first part, the first part after every material or operator change, and at the station’s actual defined interval. This guide does not invent that interval. Mark or segregate suspect output from the last known good check whenever the line drifts, the edge changes abruptly, or the assembly moves.
Stop and re-prove after a new lot, changed coating, altered support, new handle, remounted blade, resharpening that changes feel, repaired guide, changed line requirement, unexplained edge damage, or near miss. “Same job name” does not preserve approval through a changed cutting system.
Finish, inspect, and return the station
Inspect the work after it relaxes
Remove weights and let conformable material return to its natural state. This guide supplies no universal tolerance.
Check line location, straightness or intended gentle sweep, edge continuity, full severing, retained dimensions, face condition, underside condition, orientation, and repeat-part agreement. A smooth edge on the wrong side of the line still fails. A cut that looks straight while tensioned but curves after release also fails.
If local correction is allowed, support the part and take one controlled shaving cut into waste. Do not saw at a high spot until the line becomes a hollow. If the correction would cross the acceptance boundary, quarantine the part rather than cosmetically blending the evidence.
Clean, hone, inspect, and store the tool
Remove residue by the approved method, wipe the carbon blade dry, and inspect point, edge, blade body, handle, and mounting state. Hone the established bevel evenly and remove the burr without rounding the point.
Any reset therefore follows the physical handle’s approved procedure and requires another movement check and scrap proof.
Return a sound tool to the protected, model-identified station rest or storage position. Quarantine a loose, cracked, bent, chipped, corroded, unidentified, or badly altered assembly.
What goes wrong — and the recovery
“The sheet bunches ahead of the blade.” The edge is dull or loaded, the presentation is too steep, the support is poor, or the stock is being pushed instead of sliced. Stop, protect the output, clean and inspect the edge, flatten the path without stretching it, lower the slicing angle, and repeat the scrap proof.
“The slit wanders even against the mark.” The flexible blade is being side-loaded, too much edge is exposed, the guide is moving, or the stock is pulling. Restore the proven setup. If the material still deflects 57060, reject the blade for this station and reassess gauge or process; do not press harder.
“The retained edge curls or grows.” The off hand or waste hand tensioned the material. Support both sides neutrally, let waste clear without pulling, and judge the next trial only after relaxation.
“The cut is fuzzy or joined underneath.” The edge did not sever through, the support yielded, or the stroke lifted. Keep the work flat, cut the bridge from waste, restore the edge or support, and re-prove. Never tear the strip free.
“The coating whitens, cracks, or delaminates.” The material/setup combination failed even if the base sheet separated. Stop production and qualify another edge condition, support, or process; do not hide the damage with an unsupported finish treatment.
“The point hooks the line at a restart.” The new stroke entered too steeply or without overlap. Restart in waste, lower the blade, overlap under light load, and unload before correcting direction.
“A gentle turn becomes a faceted or gouged curve.” The straight bevel edge has reached its geometry limit or the work was not rotated. Shorten the tangent strokes on scrap. If the blade must twist or bridge, move the job to an approved contour process.
“The blade moves in the handle.” Stop immediately, secure the exposed edge, quarantine the entire assembly, and use the verified handle procedure or replace the handle. No shim, glue, wedge, screw, or tightening guess is authorized by this guide.
“The edge dulls much faster than the trial.” Check for a changed lot, abrasive filler, adhesive, contamination in the cutting surface, hard contact, or rising temperature. Do not claim a service-life defect or switch steel from this observation alone; document it and reopen the station selection.
“Output rises only when the operator skips resets or inspection.” The rate is not proven.
The history footnote
It is the persistence of the extension-blade system: the handle stays at a factory station while the high-carbon edge is honed back, advanced under the verified handle method, and eventually replaced from a box carrying the same pattern-and-gauge identity. Hyde’s current catalog still organizes these blades as #2, BG, and other pattern codes because repeat industrial purchasing depends on sameness, not novelty.
