How to Make Plunge-Start Cuts at a Cutting Station
Evidence boundary: Hyde verifies the blade’s identity, steel, gauge, and dimensions. No Hyde source in this packet authorizes 57600 in a powered, fixed, reciprocating, or otherwise mechanized host. This guide supplies none of those missing claims.

Job: manually begin a controlled cut away from every outside edge of a flexible sheet, then draw the opening to its marked endpoint or around its marked perimeter.
Time: set by material qualification, cut geometry, handling, inspection, and quantity.
Difficulty: high consequence despite a short motion. Once the point breaks through, resistance can fall abruptly. The operator must control the blade not only up to the mark, but through the entry and into the space beyond it.
The exact tools from this catalog:
Hyde’s official description supports 18-gauge high-carbon chrome-vanadium steel and 4-3/4" × 3/8" × .049" dimensions. The printed catalog’s “4-4/3"” length is treated as a transposition error because Hyde’s official description supplies 4-3/4".
That family fit supports use with the 3/8" 57600. Mounting, securing, and inspection must follow instructions verified for the physical handle in hand.
Everything else: the released drawing, pattern, template, sample, or work instruction; same-lot scrap; an approved marking method; a clean cut-through support selected for the material; a protected rest for the exposed tool; clamps, weights, or fixtures that stay clear of the projected blade path; suitable inspection aids; a controlled sharps container; adequate lighting; and PPE selected from the employer’s task-specific hazard assessment.
Before the point touches the work
Confirm that “cutting station” means a manual bench here
This walkthrough covers an operator moving a 57600 by hand in one of the cataloged wood handles while the work lies still on a controlled support. It does not authorize fastening the blade to a machine, placing it beside driven stock, reaching through a guard, feeding material past a fixed exposed point, clearing a wrap, or working inside a moving equipment envelope.
If power moves the blade, the stock, a roll, a clamp, or another station element, stop at the machine boundary. OSHA requires protection from point-of-operation and other machine hazards under 29 CFR 1910.212, and work exposed to unexpected startup or stored energy belongs under the employer’s energy-control program under 29 CFR 1910.147. A hand-cutting guide cannot substitute for either the machine maker’s instructions or the facility’s authorized procedure.
Assign ownership before a production run: who releases the material, approves the support and handle setup, sets the quality standard, controls blade issue and disposal, and decides when a changed condition requires a new trial.
Define the cut from the retained part, not from the hole
Mark the feature and identify what each part of the line means:
retained side and waste side;
entry point, direction of first draw, endpoints, corners, and meeting points;
whether the feature is a through-cut slit, a window, a relief opening, or an allowance for a later operation;
which face is appearance-critical and which face contacts the support;
material direction such as grain, nap, stretch, coating, reinforcement, laminate orientation, or adhesive face;
the state in which the part is inspected—supported, released and relaxed, folded, assembled, or fitted to another part; and
reject conditions such as a split beyond the endpoint, hooked start, distorted slot, torn reinforcement, face marking, delamination, incomplete severing, or hidden-layer damage.
The geometry produced by a plunge and draw depends on point, cutting edge, material response, support, operator motion, and finish method.
Likewise, do not stack layers because a single ply passed. Hyde states no ply capacity. The upper sheet can hide creep, an incomplete lower cut, a displaced reinforcement, or a hand placed beneath the stack. A multi-layer process needs its own qualified setup and inspection.
Prove what is behind the entry point
An inside start is a deliberate breakthrough. Treat the space below the mark as part of the cut.
Remove the work from walls, floors, tanks, ducts, upholstered assemblies, wired panels, belting systems, packages with contents, or other installed locations unless an authorized process positively establishes the backside and isolates every concealed hazard. Looking at the face is not backside verification. Drawings, scans, access from the reverse, controlled disassembly, or another facility-approved method must prove that the projected point and runout cannot meet wiring, tubing, fasteners, glass, stored pressure, energized parts, a second layer that must remain intact, or another person.
At the bench, use a support meant to be cut into without damaging the blade or deflecting it toward the operator. Inspect it for buried screws, staples, chips, hardened adhesive, embedded grit, joints, voids, and old cut channels that could steer the point. Support the work continuously around the entry and along the planned draw. A bridge over a gap can collapse at breakthrough, pulling the point farther than intended.
Never hold the work in the air, across a knee, against the torso, or in one hand while driving the point with the other. A stable cut-through support is the safer station method.
Select a handle without inventing its mechanism
The four linked wood handles share one supported fit statement: Hyde catalogs them as flat-sided hardwood handles for 5/16" and 3/8" mill blades. Their documented lengths are 4-1/2", 4-3/4", 4-3/4", and 5-1/4". Choose among qualified physical samples for hand fit and station clearance; do not turn length into a promise of force, control, or safety.
The codes 2SR, 12LR, 2L, and 1R are not decoded in the source packet. In particular, 57660 and 57680 are identical on every currently supported axis except their unexplained codes.
Inspect the actual handle for splits, cracks, a damaged blade seat, contamination, unauthorized modification, loose material, or any condition that could allow movement. Install and secure the 57600 only by a procedure verified for that exact handle. The catalog does not say whether the wood version uses a wedge, screw, friction fit, clamp, or another retention method. This guide therefore gives no insertion depth, projection, torque, wedge direction, shim, adhesive, fastener, or adjustment sequence.
After setup, make a low-load check on scrap. Quarantine the assembly if the blade shifts, rotates, rocks, creeps, withdraws, or changes orientation. “It stayed in last time” is not a retention test.
Inspect the point, edge, and body
Use strong raking light. Reject a bent body, cracked steel, chipped or rolled point, deep corrosion, edge damage, or an asymmetry created by poor sharpening. A plunge-start tool depends on the point locating the entry; a rounded or offset tip can skid before it penetrates.
Hyde states that the blade is hardened, tempered, ground, and honed. That does not supply an inspection interval, resharpening angle, discard dimension, or permission to reshape the lance point. Use the station’s approved sharpening and blade-control procedure.
OSHA’s general hand-tool rule makes the employer responsible for tools being in safe condition (29 CFR 1910.242(a)). For work exposing hands to cut or puncture hazards, OSHA requires task- and hazard-based selection of appropriate hand protection rather than a generic glove claim (29 CFR 1910.138). Gloves do not make it acceptable to put a hand in the projected point, draw path, or breakthrough zone.
Qualify the complete motion on same-lot scrap
Reproduce the production material, orientation, conditioning, support, mark, handle, blade setup, operator position, lighting, endpoint, and inspection method.
Set the scrap large enough that both hands can remain outside the blade’s forward and downward projections. Arrange the body so a slip travels into controlled support and empty space, never toward the operator. Keep coworkers beyond the runout envelope. Put clamps and weights where neither the handle nor separated waste can strike them.
A passing trial must repeat without:
point skid, material tenting, or an uncontrolled jump at breakthrough;
blade contact with anything below the intended layer except the approved support;
split, tear, or cut extension beyond the marked endpoint;
side-loading, binding, bending, or movement in the handle;
hand repositioning into the future blade path;
stretching, puckering, delamination, face marking, or lower-layer bridging;
rising entry force or progressively rougher edges; or
failure against the part’s own inspection method after release.
The trial qualifies only the recorded setup. It does not establish a general leather, rubber, textile, coated-fabric, plastic, or composite rating. If the method does not pass, reject it for that operation or return the process to qualified engineering. Do not manufacture a capacity claim by repeating a failed plunge with more force.
Make the plunge-start cut
Stage the entry so the blade has somewhere safe to go
Place the marked entry over sound sacrificial support. Confirm once more that the off hand is beside or behind the point—not beneath the sheet, beyond the endpoint, or inside the cutout. Clear the handle sweep and the line of draw. Set the waste so it can separate without wrapping the blade or pulling the retained edge.
Present the lance point squarely enough to locate at the approved entry mark without scraping across the appearance face. Use the qualified sample state; do not improvise a steeper stab to speed entry.
Brace the work with support and approved fixtures, not with fingers close to the point. If the sheet tents or walks before entry, stop. Improve support or clamping and repeat the scrap trial. A second, harder attempt on a moving surface usually magnifies the hazard.
Pierce as a controlled breakthrough, not a stab
Apply a deliberate, steadily increasing load along the qualified entry direction. Keep the wrist and blade aligned. Do not rock the handle side to side, twist the point to bore a hole, or lever against the blade body. Those motions side-load a slender edge and make the eventual direction of release unpredictable.
Expect resistance to change suddenly when the tip crosses the underside. The controlling action is to arrest immediately at the qualified breakthrough state. Do not drive until the handle, a guessed depth, or a feeling of “fully through” becomes the stop.
If the point does not enter under the proven load and setup, withdraw along the same path, place the tool in its protected rest, and inspect the point, support, material, and mark. A material that resists the qualified entry has invalidated the setup.
Convert the entry into a draw without levering the tip
Once controlled breakthrough is established, change from entry load to the qualified slicing direction. The transition should move the cutting edge forward through the marked waste while keeping the blade plane aligned with the line. Do not plant the point and swing the handle as a pivot. That turns a cutting action into lateral leverage and can hook the retained side or break the tip.
Use short, observable progress at first. Keep the line visible ahead of the edge and the support continuous beneath it. Let the waste open without pulling it. If the waste must be managed, stop, park the tool safely, reposition the work, and resume only after both hands are outside the renewed path.
For a straight slit, draw toward the endpoint with decreasing stroke length as it approaches. For an internal window, treat each corner and direction change as a separate controlled phase: stop short, unload, reposition the work, establish the next direction, and join cuts from waste. Do not twist a buried point around a corner.
Stop the cut without letting it run past the mark
An internal slit concentrates stress at its endpoints. Slow before the mark, shorten the final movement, and stop while the edge is still controllable. Do not use the first visible surface split as the stop; inspect whether the underside has actually severed to the intended endpoint.
If a fiber, backing, reinforcement, or thin bridge remains, keep the work supported and make a deliberate finishing cut from an authorized direction. Never tear the waste free. Tearing can extend the slit invisibly, delaminate a laminate, or pull the cut beyond the endpoint.
For a cutout, plan the final connection so the loose center does not drop, rotate into the point, or drag the blade across the retained edge. Support or capture the waste by the approved method, but do not put fingers inside the opening while the blade is active. Finish, withdraw along a clear path, and place the tool on its protected rest before removing the waste.
Preserve the qualified setup across repeated parts
Repeat production by holding the conditions that passed:
same released material and relevant lot or condition;
same face, direction, support, marking, fixture, and cut geometry;
same 57600 identity, inspected point condition, verified handle, and approved mounting state;
same entry zone, operator stance, hand exclusion zones, draw direction, and endpoint method;
same blade-accountability and protected-rest routine.
This guide does not invent a check interval. Inspect the first piece and follow the released control plan. Stop and requalify after a material change, remount, handle change, sharpening, point damage, support replacement, operator change, unexplained force increase, blade movement, quality drift, or near miss.
Production pressure does not move the safety boundary. Do not chase output by stabbing harder, extending the stroke, holding parts in the hand, stacking unqualified plies, skipping backside checks, or allowing the point to run into a deep support groove. If the manual method cannot meet the required rate while preserving control, the process owner must redesign the operation.
Finish, inspect, and reset
Inspect both faces after the material relaxes
Remove fixtures as the work instruction permits and let the part return to its inspection state. Check the entry location, line position, endpoint integrity, cutout shape, full severing, retained dimensions, face condition, reverse-side condition, and any reinforcement or laminate affected by the cut.
Look specifically for a hooked entry, an oversized puncture, a split running beyond an endpoint, a lower ply that remains connected, a support impression, delamination, whitening, stretch, contamination, or evidence that the point struck something hidden. Do not blend away evidence of an unstable process.
Hold the part and station after any unexplained nick, impact, blade movement, hidden-object contact, or cut-through into a layer that should have remained intact. Determine what was contacted before another part is placed on the support.
Reset the station without leaving an exposed surprise
Clean residue by the facility-approved method, dry the blade, and inspect the lance point, cutting edge, body, handle, and mounting state. Hyde’s chrome-vanadium statement does not authorize chemical exposure, soaking, a cleaning compound, or a corrosion guarantee. Use only care methods compatible with the actual material and workplace procedure.
Return a sound tool to a protected, identified rest or storage location. Do not leave the point buried in the support, loose in a drawer, under scrap, or projecting into a material-flow aisle. Quarantine a dull, bent, chipped, cracked, corroded, loose, or unidentified assembly.
When a blade is consumed or rejected, follow the facility’s controlled sharps route. Do not recap it by hand with improvised material or place it loose in ordinary waste. Account for the blade before the next operation begins.
What goes wrong — and the controlled recovery
“The point skates off the mark.” The point may be dull or asymmetric, the surface may be unsupported or slick, the entry angle may have changed, or the mark may be unsuitable. Stop and inspect. Restore the qualified support and blade condition; do not trap the point with a fingertip or stab harder.
“The blade jumps after it breaks through.” The support has a void, the operator is overdriving, or the process has no positive way to arrest the motion. Replace the support and requalify the entry with a smaller, controlled motion. Treat anything below the work as potentially contacted until inspected.
“The slit keeps running past its endpoint.” The final stroke is too long, material tension is opening the slit, or the endpoint geometry needs a different qualified method. Shorten the approach, neutralize tension, and inspect both faces. Do not pull the slit open to see whether it is finished.
“The cut hooks toward the retained side.” The point was levered, the blade is twisted or moving in the handle, the waste is pulling, or the material shifted. Stop, quarantine a moving assembly, restore support, and restart only from a proven waste-side position.
“The top face is cut but the underside is still bridged.” The sheet or stack was not supported flat, or the method was not qualified through the actual construction. Do not tear the bridge. Support it and use an authorized finishing cut; requalify before repeating.
“The blade binds in the entry.” Do not twist or pry it free. Stabilize the work, reverse along the entry path without placing a hand in front of the point, then inspect for a closed kerf, adhesive, reinforcement, bent blade, or unsuitable material.
“The handle feels different halfway through the batch.” Stop immediately. Any rotation, creep, rocking, or looseness is a retention failure until the exact handle procedure proves otherwise. The cataloged width fit is not proof that a loose assembly is safe.
“There is a hard strike under the sheet.” Freeze the operation. Withdraw under control, account for the blade, inspect both blade and backing, and identify the object. Never assume it was “only the table.”
“The part cuts only with more force each time.” Edge condition, residue, material condition, or setup has changed. Replace or service the blade under the approved procedure and repeat the sample. Hyde supplies no force or edge-life threshold.
“The required cut is on an installed or powered assembly.” This guide no longer applies. Resolve hidden services, machine guarding, hazardous energy, host compatibility, and the approved process before exposing the blade.
The history footnote
It is the industrial logic of a replaceable, adjustable blade. A 1952 U.S. patent for a blade-and-handle combination describes an already-known arrangement in which a blade could be advanced outward as sharpening consumed it or replaced while the same handle remained in service ([U.S. Patent 2,597,258]( It does show why extension systems persisted: the handle stays, the sharpened pattern is renewed, and the purchasing identity remains the blade number. Hyde’s current 57600 is one surviving lance-point entry in that much older shop-floor economy.
