In particular, the record supports no functional distinction between 57660 and 57680. This guide therefore makes length selection through a controlled station trial and supplies no missing specification.
Job: choose and document the shortest, middle, or longest Hyde flat-sided wood extension-blade handle that lets one defined manual cutting-station operation run with acceptable grip, clearance, reach, control, and output.
Result: one model code is assigned to the station for one proved blade-and-work setup; the decision record states why that length passed, what alternatives failed or remained equivalent, and which changes require a new trial.
Time: allow one setup period plus repeated same-material scrap cuts with each legitimate candidate. A short trial can select for geometry and control; it cannot prove an entire shift’s ergonomic exposure.

Before the trial: freeze the decision you are actually making
Name one station, one operation, and one output
Do not choose a “best shop handle” in the abstract. Name the station, operator population, material, blade pattern, cut, and accepted result. A handle that clears a close trimming fixture may be needlessly cramped at an open bench. A handle that fills the hand on a free draw may collide with a stop, machine housing, material fold, or guide during a short return stroke.

This guide covers a manual handle used at a controlled cutting station. It does not authorize installing a Hyde handle or blade in powered equipment, reaching into a moving process, clearing a jam, bypassing guarding, or changing a machine’s tooling. If power or stored energy can move the material or mechanism, stop and use that equipment’s engineering and energy-control procedure.
Confirm the blade family without borrowing an unproved fit
The shared Hyde statement is narrow: these flat-sided hardwood handles are for 5/16" and 3/8" mill blades. Confirm that the physical blade belongs to one of those widths before the handle-length comparison begins. Do not infer fit for a narrower blade, a wider blade, a handled trade knife, a utility blade, or another maker’s blade merely because it can be inserted.
The line includes bevel-point, HSS, curve-point, and lance-point extension blades, but the blade’s pattern, gauge, steel, and cut role are separate decisions. This page does not turn all of them into substitutes. Keep the station’s already approved blade constant across the handle trial. If the blade identity changes, the handle result must be rechecked because the working reach, material response, and safe stroke may change even though the documented family width remains 5/16" or 3/8".
Where either is involved, confirm the physical blade and controlling plant record before claiming a fit. The handle family accepts both documented widths; the unresolved blade identity still cannot be waved away.
Treat retention as a prerequisite, not a selection feature
The neighboring metal-handle description mentions set screws, but that statement does not transfer to wood.
do not invent an insertion depth, tightening direction, torque, or pull-test value;
do not shim, glue, drill, wrap, or otherwise modify a candidate to make it pass; and
do not compare candidates on “stronger retention,” because no such model-specific distinction is documented.
Each candidate may enter the cutting trial only after the station owner has used the verified method for that exact physical handle and confirmed that the assembly does not creep, rotate, rock, or withdraw during the station’s approved pre-use check. A comfortable loose blade is not a candidate.
Draw the station’s clearance envelope
Observe the whole motion before cutting. Clearance is not just the gap between the handle butt and the bench while the blade is on the line. Follow the tool through:
pickup from the protected rest;
approach to the start;
the first entry stroke;
the longest normal draw;
any permitted turn or change in wrist position;
the endpoint and unload;
the return and reset;
waste clearing; and
safe placement back in the rest.
Mark every object the hand or handle can meet: a guide, fixture post, fence, table edge, material stack, folded waste, guard, machine housing, lamp, neighboring tool, or the operator’s own body. Include vertical clearance as well as lengthwise clearance. A handle can pass over the work in one grip and strike it after the wrist rotates.
Do not “solve” a long-handle collision by exposing more blade, changing the approved grip, leaning into the danger zone, moving a guard, or cutting with the assembly partly withdrawn. Those changes alter the system. The honest result is that the candidate failed the station envelope.
Understand the three supported length positions
Use length as a candidate selector, not a performance promise
The documented ladder contains three positions:

These are reasons to test, not guaranteed outcomes. A quarter-inch can matter inside a fixture and disappear at an open bench. A half-inch can complete a grip for one operator and force another to shift the wrist.
The line document characterizes 57630 as the close-work end, 57620 as the full-grip/reach end, and the 4-3/4" pair as the middle. Preserve that relative meaning without turning it into a numeric force claim. The longest candidate’s extra body does not authorize harder cutting, prying, or a material capacity the blade does not have.
Refuse the false 57660-versus-57680 choice
The 57660 and 57680 are both documented as 4-3/4" flat-sided hardwood handles for 5/16" and 3/8" mill blades. One is coded 12LR and the other 2L.
Do not decode the letters as left/right, long/short, grip direction, blade offset, retention style, hand preference, or any other property. Do not claim one is heavier, better balanced, stronger, or intended for a particular blade. Length alone cannot select between them.
If a controlled trial appears to show a difference between individual 57660 and 57680 samples, record the observable difference in those physical samples and quarantine the inference. It may reflect condition, wear, manufacturing variation, an undocumented pattern feature, or trial noise. It does not prove what 12LR and 2L mean.
Run the controlled station trial
Start with a blade-free handling screen
Before mounting a sharp blade, handle each legitimate length through a dry version of the station cycle. This is not the acceptance trial; it is a safe way to eliminate an obvious mismatch.
Use the real working posture and PPE. Establish the intended grip without squeezing to compensate for poor fit. Move through pickup, approach, working stroke, unload, reset, and return. Reject or flag a candidate when:
the butt strikes or nearly strikes a fixed object in a normal motion;
fingers cannot remain fully on the handle through the cycle;
the hand must migrate during a representative stroke;
the wrist must be bent or lifted solely to make the handle clear;
the operator must reach farther into the station than the approved posture allows;
the handle cannot be set down safely in the existing rest; or
the shortest body disappears inside the grip so far that consistent orientation cannot be maintained.
Judge the actual candidate in the actual station.
Establish a fair comparison
For the candidates that survive the dry screen, hold every non-length variable constant:
same trained operator for the first comparison;
same blade model, verified width, edge condition, and station-approved projection;
same material and lot;
same line, fixture, support, guide, retained side, and waste behavior;
same working posture and PPE;
same acceptance gauge or sample;
same number and type of trial cuts; and
same verified retention and pre-use check.
Change only the handle candidate. If the blade must be reset between handles, follow the verified method and repeat the pre-use check; do not assume the projection or retention state carried over. Randomize or repeat the order if edge wear could make the first handle look better than the last. Restore the edge or use equivalent approved blades when needed, and record that intervention.
Do not ask the operator simply which handle “feels best.” That question invites habit and brand-code preference. Ask for observations tied to the work: Did every finger remain placed? Did the butt clear? Could the start be reached without leaning? Did the edge stay visible? Was the endpoint completed without choking up? Did the handle return to the rest without crossing the blade path?
Make slow same-material proof cuts
Use same-lot scrap that reproduces the production stack, support, surface, orientation, and cut length. Begin below production pace. The handle trial does not expand the blade’s approved material or process scope.
For each candidate:
Perform the verified assembly and movement check.
Mark the candidate model and exact length on the trial sheet.
Take the approved grip before entering the work.
Make the defined cut without changing grip to rescue the candidate.
Clear the waste and return the tool using the normal station cycle.
Inspect the blade position and physical handle before the next cut.
Inspect the output against the same acceptance method.
Repeat enough times to expose a recurring collision, reach problem, grip migration, or control loss.
Stop immediately for blade movement, a cracked or split handle, uncontrolled skip, hand encroachment, collision, rising force, loss of the line, or any output defect that the approved setup did not produce. Secure the exposed edge and quarantine a damaged or unstable assembly. The failure does not authorize a field repair.
Score observable pass/fail criteria
Use a simple station-specific record:
Clearance: Does the handle clear every fixed object and material state through pickup, cut, reset, and return, with the approved hand position intact?
Grip: Can the operator establish a complete repeatable grip, keep the fingers placed, and release the tool normally without choking up or sliding the hand?
Reach: Can the approved start, longest stroke, and endpoint be reached without leaning into the station, extending the blade farther, or substituting body movement for handle length?
Control: Does the operator keep the edge and line under observation, unload at the planned point, and return safely without a corrective grab?
Output: Does the relaxed work meet the station’s own line, edge, surface, and repeatability criteria?
This is an observation, not a claim about how the unknown retention mechanism works.
Repeatability: Do the same results recur rather than appearing on one favorable stroke?
A candidate passes only if all required criteria pass. Do not average away a collision because the grip felt good, or excuse poor output because the handle reached easily.
Add representative operators without creating a hand-size chart
After one operator proves the comparison method, include the operators who genuinely share the station or represent its authorized range. Record their observations separately. Do not convert the result into “4-1/2" for small hands” and “5-1/4" for large hands.” The trial is evidence for this station, posture, PPE, material, and operator population—not an anatomy standard.
If different operators require different passing lengths, first look for a station-layout or support problem that can be corrected without changing the cutting system. If separate handles remain necessary, control them by model and assignment so the station does not drift between unrecorded setups. A universal handle is convenient, but convenience cannot overrule clearance or control.
A short proof also cannot establish long-shift fatigue, repetitive-motion exposure, or medical suitability. If the station runs for extended periods, route those questions through the employer’s ergonomic and safety process. This guide does not infer comfort, balance, or injury prevention from handle length.
Make and preserve the decision
Apply the decision rule
Only one length passes: select that exact model, provided its physical identity and retention procedure are controlled.
More than one length passes: choose by the station’s limiting constraint, not by a universal ranking. Preserve the candidate that gives adequate grip and reach with the most reliable clearance across the complete motion.
The two 4-3/4" models both pass: length has selected the middle position, not one code. Otherwise escalate the unresolved 12LR/2L identity rather than inventing a tie-breaker.
No length passes: stop. Handle length cannot cure a wrong blade, unsupported material, inaccessible line, unsafe station envelope, failed retention method, or process that belongs in another controlled tool.
Results conflict between repeats: no selection yet. Restore the common variables, inspect the samples, and repeat. An inconsistent trial is evidence of an uncontrolled setup.
Do not select on price, availability, title wording, familiarity, or the assumption that the middle must be “balanced.” None is part of this row’s supported decision.
Record the selected state
The release note for the station should name:
selected handle model, code, and documented length;
blade model or controlled identity and verified 5/16" or 3/8" width;
station, material, lot, fixture, guide, support, and operation;
trial date and approving role;
acceptance method and observed result;
rejected candidates and their concrete failure;
status of 57660/57680 if the middle position was selected; and
conditions that trigger a new trial.
Label the handle and storage position by exact model code if the station controls one. Do not let “middle wood handle” replace 57660 or 57680 in a reorder record; their physical distinction may be unresolved, but their identities are not interchangeable by assumption.
Re-run selection when the system changes
Recheck the chosen length after a blade-pattern or gauge change, changed projection under the verified method, new fixture, moved guard, different material support, new PPE that affects grip, changed cut path, new operator population, repaired or replaced handle, station relocation, unexplained collision, near miss, or output drift tied to handling.
A worn edge is a maintenance event. A different blade, handle, material, or station geometry is a configuration event. Do not hide a configuration change inside ordinary sharpening or replenishment.
What goes wrong — and the recovery
“The 5-1/4" handle fills the hand, but its butt hits the fixture.” It fails clearance. Do not expose more blade or lift the wrist to rescue it. Trial the 4-3/4" position, then 4-1/2" if needed, with all other variables controlled.
“The 4-1/2" handle clears everything, but the hand shifts during the draw.” It fails the repeatable-grip criterion. Try the middle length; do not normalize choking up, pinching, or gripping the blade seat.
“The shortest and longest both produce acceptable parts.” Output alone does not close the decision. Compare full-cycle clearance, grip placement, reach, and return-to-rest behavior. If both still pass, document the station’s limiting constraint and preserve the selected alternative without claiming universal superiority.
“57660 feels different from 57680.” Record the physical observation, inspect condition and setup, and repeat blind to code if practical. Do not decode 12LR or 2L.
“The blade moves only in one candidate.” Stop and quarantine that assembly. Do not conclude that the model has weaker retention; the mechanism and model comparison are undocumented. Resolve the physical handle and verified setup.
“The operator wants the longer handle so the blade can be driven harder.” Reject the reasoning. Handle length does not create an authorized force, material capacity, torque, or prying use. Re-evaluate the blade and process if the approved cut needs more force.
“The handle clears on scrap but collides once waste accumulates.” The trial omitted a real material state. Add representative waste handling and repeat every candidate through the complete cycle.
“A glove change makes the selected grip cramped.” PPE changed the hand-to-handle system. Re-run the representative-operator trial; never reduce required PPE to preserve a handle choice.
“The station uses both 5/16" and 3/8" blades.” The family claim covers both widths, but one passing handle trial does not automatically validate every blade pattern and projection. Prove each controlled configuration that materially changes reach or handling.
“None of the three lengths works.” The correct outcome is no selection from this family for the current setup. Redesign or re-authorize the station through its owner; do not invent compatibility with another blade or handle.
The history footnote
The useful history is the persistence of the extension-blade system, not a claim that one of these model codes invented it. A factory station keeps a durable handle while a mill blade is sharpened, reset under its verified method, and eventually replaced. Pattern codes survive because repeat industrial purchasing depends on exact identities.
