Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not a cutting tool on its own — bladeless, it does nothing; it is the seat.
  • Not the extreme-control or extreme-leverage pick — as a middle length it is neither the shortest close-work handle nor the longest leverage handle, so a job that truly needs one end of the range is better matched there.
  • Not a seat for wide blades — 5/16" and 3/8" only; wider flat-grind mill blades take the metal handles.
  • Not a riveted-knife handle — the trade knives in this line carry fixed hardwood handles and are outside the extension system.

How the pros run it

01

Set and secure the blade before cutting

Fix the extension at the working length and lock it (mechanism per Hyde ⚑); a shifting blade wrecks the cut. Feel the flats. Keep a flat against the fingers so the edge's direction is known without looking. Handle to the hand, blade to the cut. The 4-3/4" body is a middle grip — it does not change what the blade cuts, only how the tool sits; choose the length that fits the hand and the clearance. Keep the wood dry and unlevered. A hardwood station handle serves for years unless it is pressed into prying on a seated blade, which is how handles die.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What is this handle for?
Holding an extension (mill) blade at a cutting station — the blade is the consumable, the handle stays for years. Mount a 5/16" or 3/8" blade, set the extension, cut.
How long is it?
4-3/4" — a middle-length grip, longer than the 4-1/2" short handle and shorter than the 5-1/4" long one.
What's the difference between this and the 57680?
None we can support — same length, build, and blade fit; only the (undocumented) pattern code differs. We refuse to invent a distinction. Buy on the code your station specifies.
Which blades fit?
Any 5/16" or 3/8" mill blade — every extension blade in this line.
How is the blade held in?
Undocumented for the wood handles; the metal handles use set screws. We won't state it until Hyde confirms.
