Registration does not make those tools interchangeable and does not create a universal notch chart. The exact covering installation instructions, exact adhesive technical data sheet (TDS), and exact substrate-system instructions must jointly admit the installation and state the required meter or maker selection procedure. A matching Hyde record identifies a tool; it does not prove compatibility, transfer, coverage, cure, or performance.
Job: qualify one identified covering–adhesive–substrate system, extract the maker-required notch without translating its notation, and route that exact meter to one documented Hyde model and suitable tool format.
Covering category words such as “tile,” “vinyl,” “carpet,” “rubber,” or “wood” are search terms, not specifications.
Everything else: exact covering maker, model/SKU, format, dimensions, backing, and lot where required · exact adhesive maker, product, revision, and lot · exact substrate assembly, preparation products, and condition · current installation instructions and TDS for all three · current safety data sheets (SDS) · environmental and moisture-test records required by those documents · clean undamaged candidate tool · a selection register.
This guide is one decision system:
qualify the exact three-part system;
extract the exact maker-defined meter and process conditions;
choose format only after the meter is fixed;
apply and verify only by the system maker's procedure;
record the literal result and preserve every unresolved flag.
It never starts with a Hyde model and works backward to a covering.
Record the three exact identities separately.
1.1 Covering record
Capture maker, exact product/SKU, size and format, backing or mounting system, installation location, and the current installation-instruction revision. “Ceramic,” “sheet vinyl,” “mosaic,” “rubber,” or “plank” is insufficient. Two products in the same broad category may require different adhesives, notch profiles, spread rates, substrate preparation, transfer checks, or coverage results.
Extract, without paraphrase:
admitted adhesive products or adhesive classes;
admitted substrate assemblies and preparation;
notch or spread-method instruction;
required coverage, transfer, or contact result;
open, flash, working, and placement limits where stated;
rolling, beating-in, back-buttering, or inspection method where stated;
environmental, moisture, movement-joint, acclimation, and cure restrictions.
1.2 Adhesive record
Capture maker, exact product name and code, TDS revision/date, lot when traceability is required, and the exact intended covering and substrate.
Extract the adhesive maker's exact:
notch profile and printed dimension string, or its named selection procedure;
coverage/spread-rate range and the conditions attached to it;
substrate preparation and permitted primers;
mixing, induction, pot-life, open/flash, working, and cure instructions;
transfer or coverage inspection and corrective procedure;
temperature, humidity, substrate-moisture, ventilation, ignition, PPE, cleanup, and disposal controls.
If the TDS says to consult the covering maker, do that. If it provides a table keyed to a covering's exact size, backing, or substrate, use the exact row.
1.3 Substrate-system record
Identify the actual assembly, not just its visible top surface: concrete and its moisture condition; approved underlayment; backer board; plywood construction; prepared metal; wallboard; an existing approved finish; or another maker-defined system.
Old resilient flooring, asphalt tile, or black cutback residue triggers the line document's test-before-disturbing asbestos boundary. A new-adhesive trowel is not an abatement tool. Do not scrape, sand, drill, abrade, or remove suspect material under this selection job. See the current primary sources in section 8.
1.4 Reconcile the packet
Proceed only when:
the covering instructions admit the exact adhesive or a class that clearly includes it;
the adhesive TDS admits the exact covering and backing;
both admit the actual substrate system and its preparation;
the current documents do not conflict on notch, spread method, timing, environment, or result;
every prerequisite test and preparation result is within its maker-defined limit.
When documents conflict, do not average them, prefer the larger notch, prefer the newer-looking webpage, or use a generic trade chart.
Extract the meter without inventing a notation key
Copy the maker's notch language verbatim:
profile name exactly as stated;
every printed dimension in printed order;
any labeled width, depth, spacing, tooth, or gap terms;
required angle, direction, or spread-rate condition;
the covering row and substrate condition to which it applies;
source title, revision, page, and retrieval date.
Do not convert a V, U, or square profile into another geometry by area arithmetic. Do not round a fraction, substitute a “close” size, or interpret a nominal label as a tolerance. Do not infer that two identical-looking number strings use the same order.
Hyde's accepted packets establish the first notch figure as width, but provide no official key assigning the remaining figures to depth versus spacing. That unresolved notation applies to this decision job.
an equal-number cube such as 1/16" x 1/16" x 1/16" is textually matchable without deciding the order of its last two equal figures;
a non-equal three-number record may be matched only when maker documentation establishes that the compared strings use the same convention, or Hyde supplies the missing notation key;
a two-number V record is copied as printed; this guide does not label the second figure;
a profile letter omitted from a dimension row is not supplied from habit;
physical measurement can expose a mismatch but cannot create an official notation key or application claim.
This guide does not reverse-engineer a notch from gallons per square foot, tile size, adhesive viscosity, or a sample result.
Match the exact meter to the canonical Hyde register
The register below is an identity and record reconciliation, not a recommendation table. “Record” reproduces accepted Hyde material only; it does not assign a covering or declare a system compatible.
An exact meter absent from this register is NO MATCH, not permission to choose the nearest Hyde model.
Choose format only after the meter is fixed
Format cannot rescue a meter mismatch. First obtain an exact documented meter match; then choose between exact-meter candidates using only documented format and the maker's use constraints.
Full trowel: room-scale handled format.
Small handled spreader: confined or small-area handled format.
Rigid metal plate: hand-scale, durable format.
One-piece plastic spreader: hand-scale one-piece plastic format; cleanup and disposition remain system-controlled.
For example, 04124 and 19030 share the same printed V meter but differ in format; 05532 and 19110 share another printed V meter but differ in material and durability; 05534, 19100, and 19062 share an equal-number square meter across plastic, steel-plate, and full-trowel formats. The existence of a candidate set supplies no compatibility or performance result.
Multi-edge tools require the selected edge to be identified in the work record before material is opened. Never change working edges midway through one installation unless the exact system instructions direct it.
Apply, clean, cure, and close only under the exact system procedure
Verify document revisions and identities at the work area.
Confirm substrate preparation, moisture, environment, and prerequisite results are inside the stated limits.
Inspect the selected edge clean and dry. Reject nicks, bent teeth, worn plastic, cured residue, corrosion, or deformation that changes the printed meter.
Record the selected model and working edge against the exact TDS quotation.
Mix, condition, or open the adhesive only as its TDS directs.
Apply using the maker-defined angle, direction, pressure, section size, spread rate, and timing. No universal 45-degree angle, ridge direction, open time, or re-trowel interval is supplied here.
Place, roll, beat in, back-butter, or otherwise consolidate only as the covering and adhesive instructions require.
Perform the exact maker-defined transfer, coverage, lift, contact, or spread-rate check at the stated frequency and time.
Record the literal result. A document-qualified meter plus an acceptable maker-defined check is a result for that exact system and condition only.
At the last spread, run cleanup only from the exact adhesive label, TDS, SDS, and site plan: permitted method and cleaner, cleanup window, spill controls, tool disposition, and waste route. Metal, plastic, Value Series, or Economy does not decide wash, reuse, or discard.
Maintain only the exact covering/adhesive/substrate restrictions for cure and area control—including any stated traffic, load, water, temperature, humidity, ventilation, or ignition conditions—until the maker's named release criterion is met. Record application end, required interval or test, site conditions, deviations, and release time; “dry to touch” is not substituted for cure.
Close the work only by the maker's inspection/commissioning method and the site closeout plan. Record the final surface result, tool condition, unused-product disposition, waste handoff, and any unresolved hold. Release the area only when every exact-system and site gate is satisfied.
The line notes carry secondary summaries of common tile coverage numbers, but this guide does not turn them into a universal threshold.
Failure modes and stop rules
Only a covering category is known. Stop at HOLD — COVERING IDENTITY MISSING.
The adhesive pail is identified but the current TDS is absent. Stop.
The substrate is called “floor” or “wall.” Stop. Resolve the actual assembly, condition, preparation, and required tests.
The TDS gives no notch or selection procedure. Mark HOLD — METER NOT SPECIFIED; do not reverse-engineer one.
The required profile or printed dimensions do not exist in the 22-model register. Mark NO MATCH; source the specified tool outside this line.
A non-equal dimension string cannot be reconciled to Hyde's notation. Mark HOLD — NOTATION UNRESOLVED.
The proposed model carries an unresolved row conflict. Preserve it. Do not choose which source “must be right.”
The notch edge is nicked, worn, bent, crusted, or softened. Reject that tool condition. Cleaning may remove permitted residue; it cannot restore missing geometry.
Open or flash time expires. Stop under the adhesive TDS. Do not add fresh adhesive over skinned material unless the maker explicitly provides that correction.
The maker-defined transfer or coverage check fails. Stop and follow only its corrective sequence. Do not automatically upsize the notch, press harder, add adhesive, or extend cure time.
Tool material and local habit cannot fill the gap.
Squeeze-out, telegraphing, hollow areas, movement, poor transfer, or delayed cure appears. Record the observation without diagnosing it from appearance alone. Recheck identity, substrate, preparation, environment, timing, spread rate, tool condition, and maker procedure.
This guide supplies no exposure limit, PPE substitution, ventilation rate, ignition clearance, or abatement method.
No successful sample, lifted unit, or prior job broadens the accepted scope to another covering size, backing, adhesive, substrate, lot, environment, tool edge, or document revision.

DOCUMENT-QUALIFIED MODEL MATCH means only that the exact printed meter was reconciled to an accepted Hyde record. It is not a compatibility, coverage, bond, cure, durability, or production-performance claim.
What notch should I use for tile, vinyl, carpet, rubber, or wood?
The category is not enough. Use the exact covering instructions, exact adhesive TDS, and exact substrate-system instructions. This guide deliberately provides no universal category-to-notch table.
Should I choose the covering first or the adhesive first?
Identify the exact proposed pair, then require both sides to admit it on the actual substrate. Neither a covering-only nor adhesive-only choice closes the system.
If two sources recommend different notches, should I use the larger one?
Larger is not safer. Preserve the conflict and obtain written clarification naming the exact products and substrate.
Can I substitute a U-notch for a square or V-notch with similar dimensions?
Not under this guide. Geometry is part of the specification. No volume conversion or “nearest equivalent” is authorized.
Can I match the same three fractions printed on the TDS and Hyde guide?
Only when the notation convention is established or the unequal dimensions do not create an order ambiguity. Hyde's packets do not label depth versus spacing after the first width figure.
Does a product's catalog duty prove my installation is compatible?
It is product identity evidence and a search lead. The exact covering–adhesive–substrate documents control compatibility and application.
Does passing a lift or transfer check prove long-term performance?
It records the maker-defined result at that time for that exact system. It does not prove cure, bond durability, movement tolerance, service life, or another area's result.
May I use 19031, 19063, or 19082 if the store title looks right?
Not for exact selection. Their decisive specifications are store-title-only because no official Hyde row or page was found.
Does plastic mean disposable or less accurate?
Neither plastic construction nor an Economy/Value label proves disposal, accuracy, or service life.
Can I reuse a prior selection on the next job?
Only after requalifying the exact covering, adhesive, substrate, document revisions, environment, and tool condition. A prior result is not a universal notch rule.

19040's name says square/U while its two dimension rows say U.
19041 carries a 10-1/8" versus 10-1/2" blade-length conflict, and its dimension rows omit profile letters despite the double-U name.
19065's printed 15/32" third figure is unusual and awaits physical/source verification.
19067's dimension rows omit profile letters and use two- and three-number forms; the double-U profile comes from the product name.
“Vinyl and vinyl materials” is quoted Hyde wording suspected to be truncated; it is not interpreted here.
The 4-3/4-inch size on 19090, 19100, 19110, and 19120 comes from listing titles rather than the accepted official variant strings.
This guide substitutes no universal threshold.
No inventor of the notched edge is established; never claim Hyde invented the trade pattern.
