Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not floor or wall tile in stiff thinset — the fine U meters lay a thin film, not the tall standing mortar ridges that medium and large tile need; that is the 19050 (1/4" square) and 19070 (3/8" square).
  • Not mastic-on-metal-and-wallboard V-notch work — the V-notch spreaders and the 19032 own that.
  • Not the offset perimeter job — a straight economy trowel jams your knuckles into the wall before the blade reaches the last inches of the floor; the 5° offset 19041 is the tool for corners and base molding.
  • Not tear-out of old flooring, and never the removal side of the asbestos boundary above.
  • And despite the "SQ-notch/U-notch" name, do not treat it as a square-notch tile trowel on the strength of the name alone — its printed dimension rows are both U, and its duty is soft goods .

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Match the meter to the pail, then don't change it mid-floor

Pick the finer or coarser U from what the adhesive label and the covering call for, and hold it for the whole covering. One direction, straight ridges — the air-escape rule; it decides whether resilient goods bond flat or bubble. Honor the flash clock — resilient and carpet adhesives are laid to a specific tack, and the covering goes down into that tack, not on your schedule. Angle is a second meter — roughly 45°, flatter under-meters and steeper over-meters; correct the angle before you blame the notch. Care for the carbon steel: wipe the blade dry after water-based adhesives so it does not bloom rust, and keep the fine notches clean — a chip in a 1/16"-class notch quietly changes what it delivers. Rotate before you fight it: a dragging edge is a signal to turn to a clean one, not to press harder.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Is it a square-notch or U-notch trowel?
The name says "SQ-notch/U-notch," but the printed dimension rows list both meters as U-notches . We publish the numbers exactly as Hyde prints them and flag the naming conflict; in use it behaves as a fine double-U resilient trowel.
What are the four edges for?
Two meter settings, each ground on two sides so you can rotate to a clean, unworn edge without stopping. It is job-to-job economy — carry two settings on one handle — not a license to change meters partway across a floor.
Carpet, vinyl, or linoleum — which meter?
Match the coarser or finer U to the adhesive label and covering, and hold it for the whole floor. Broadly: the coarser pair for heavier-bodied spreads, the finer pair for the thinnest sheet-vinyl and VCT adhesives.
How is it different from the 19060?
The 19060 names asphalt materials and carries the coarser 3/32" x 3/32" x 1/8" linoleum meter; the 19040 names carpet and wall tile and its coarser meter is finer. Same body, different duty and different coarse bed.
Can I set floor tile with it?
No — the fine U meters are for thin adhesives, not the standing mortar ridges tile needs. That is the 19050 and 19070.
