Not large-format, quarry tile, or pavers — those big, heavy, often uneven-backed units need the taller standing ridges of the 19070's 1/4" x 3/8" x 1/4" deep square, and setting them over the 19050's shallower bed leaves hollow, unsupported corners that crack at the first point load.
Not mosaic sheets or small wall tile — the 19050's 1/4" bed drowns them, squeezing adhesive up through every joint of the sheet; that is the fine-square (19062) and V-notch spreader territory.
Not sheet vinyl, VCT, or the thin resilient goods — their adhesives are laid almost as a coat of paint off the fine U and square meters (19060, 19040, and the finest squares), and a 1/4" bed under sheet vinyl would stay wet for days and telegraph every ridge through the finished floor.
Not a mixing paddle, a pry bar, or a scraper for tearing out the old floor — it spreads; it does not demolish.
And where old flooring must come up first, the asbestos boundary stands in front of the whole job: pre-1980s asphalt tile and black cutback adhesive can contain asbestos, and that is a test-before-you-disturb decision on removal, not a step you take with a spreading trowel.
The notch sets the maximum a pass can deposit; your blade angle sets how much of that maximum you actually lay. Roughly 45° is the reference — flatter under-meters (shorter ridges, thin coverage, bare corners) and steeper over-meters (taller ridges, mortar up the joints, swimming tile). Angle discipline matters as much as picking the right notch, and it is the first thing to correct when a lift-check reads wrong. One direction, straight lines — the air-escape rule above, non-negotiable. Burn coat first — press a thin bonding layer before you comb the ridges; the ridges alone do not bond a floor. Beat and slide across the ridges to collapse them fully. Keep the meter true: cementitious thinset cures by hydration and will harden on the steel whether or not it dries, so wash the trowel before it kicks — cured thinset comes off only mechanically, and every chip you pry off a notch corner nicks the meter and quietly changes what the tool delivers on the next job. Real safety, because it is load-bearing: wet cement mortar is strongly alkaline, and a day of knee-and-hand contact causes genuine chemical burns, not just dry skin — gloves and knee protection are trade practice here, not lawyer copy.

Is this the right trowel for a standard ceramic or porcelain floor?
For medium-format tile, yes — the 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/4" square is the trade's default floor meter. Step up to the 19070's 3/8"-deep square only when the tile is large-format, quarry, or paver-sized and a lift-check reads hollow-cornered.
What does the square notch do that a V or U wouldn't?
It leaves tall, flat-topped ridges that hold their height under a stiff thinset and carry the most mortar per nominal size — exactly what a medium tile needs to bed to 80%/95% coverage. A V would meter too little for floor tile; a U is tuned for resilient goods, not stiff mortar.
Can I really use it for glue-down wood plank?
Yes — it is the one member of this line Hyde designates for laminated wood plank flooring. Read the adhesive pail for open time and working window; the metering technique is the same, the chemistry and the clock are the adhesive's.
How do I know my coverage is right?
Lift a freshly set tile and read the back before the mortar skins: full even transfer is good; bare corners mean too-small a notch, too-flat an angle, or blown open time. The doctrine numbers are 80% dry, 95% wet/exterior and stone .
Why did the notch corners stop metering right after a few jobs?
Cured thinset chipped off the notches. Wash the blade before the mortar kicks; a nicked notch quietly under-delivers on every job after.
