Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not tile in mortar — neither meter lays the tall square ridges that ceramic, quarry, or paver units need; those are the 19050 and 19070 squares.
  • Not carpet or the thin-set wall-tile-and-mosaic work — the 19060's row does not name them, and the sibling built for that soft-and-carpet roster is the 19040.
  • Not mastic on wallboard and metal — that is V-notch spreader territory.
  • Not the perimeter and base-molding pass — a straight trowel can't run flat into the last inches at the wall; the offset 19041 does.
  • And not, ever, the removal of old resilient flooring: where old linoleum, asphalt tile, or cutback adhesive is in play, the asbestos boundary in 2a stands in front of the whole demolition, which is an abatement question and not a job for a spreading trowel.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Choose the bed at the pail and the covering, and commit to it

Coarse pair for linoleum and the heavier-bodied resilient adhesives; fine pair for sheet vinyl and VCT. Comb straight, comb one way — the ridges must collapse and vent, not trap air in loops; this is as true for paste under linoleum as for mortar under tile. Obey the flash window — resilient adhesives are set into a specific tack, and mis-timing it is the difference between a floor that holds and one that oozes or releases. Keep your angle near 45° and steady — the notch caps the deposit, the angle sets how much of the cap you actually lay; drift flat and you starve the bond, drift steep and you telegraph. Protect the steel and the meter — this is carbon steel, so dry it after water-based adhesives to head off rust, and never let a cementitious or fast-grab adhesive cure in the fine notches, where a single hardened chip is a meaningful fraction of a 1/16"-class channel. Turn to a clean edge the moment one starts to load rather than dragging a fouled meter through the spread.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What are the two meters for?
The coarser 3/32" x 3/32" x 1/8" U is the linoleum-and-asphalt bed; the finer 1/16" x 1/32" x 1/32" U is the sheet-vinyl and VCT bed. Pick per covering and hold it — you never change beds within one floor.
How is this different from the 19040?
The 19060 names asphalt materials and carries the coarser linoleum meter; the 19040 names carpet and wall tile and its coarse meter is finer. Same economy body, two edges each, different duty and different coarse bed.
Can I lay carpet with it?
the documented set doesn't name carpet — that is the 19040 and 19062. The 19060 is a linoleum/vinyl/asphalt trowel.
Is "asphalt materials" a hazard?
Spreading new asphalt-class adhesive is ordinary work. The hazard is on the other end: removing old asphalt tile or black cutback adhesive, which can contain asbestos and must be tested before it is disturbed. This trowel is a spreading tool, not a removal tool.
Why is the meter fine instead of tile-sized?
Because resilient adhesives are laid thin to flash and disappear under the goods. A tile-sized square would telegraph every ridge through the finished floor.
