Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Floor and wet-area tile in thinset. Wrong adhesive class and wrong notch — cementitious thinset wants standing square ridges (19050 for medium tile, 19070 for large/quarry/pavers). A V bead can't hold a floor tile's bed.
  • Room-scale spreading. Three inches of edge is a repair-and-detail width; a whole floor or wall of gallons is the 9-inch trowel's job (19030 in this V geometry).
  • Sheet resilient goods where the meter telegraphs. Sheet vinyl and VCT want fine U or fine square meters laid almost paint-thin; a 1/4" V is both too open and the wrong ridge shape, and its ridges would read through the finished floor in raking light. Those are the fine-square/U members' jobs.
  • The throwaway solvent job. If the adhesive is a solvent-based contact cement you have no intention of cleaning off, the honest tool is the one-piece plastic V (05532), not this carbon blade you'd have to scrub.
  • Mosaic and fine tile. A sheet-mounted mosaic drowns over a 1/4" V — adhesive squeezes up through every joint of the sheet. Step down to the fine square (04126) or fine V (19032).

How the pros run it

01

Angle is a second meter

Hold the blade at roughly 45° to the surface; flatter under-meters (starved bond), steeper over-meters (squeeze-out and telegraphing). The notch sets the volume, but only if the angle is disciplined. One direction, straight ridges — never swirl; swirls trap air. Thin means thin: mastic and most panel adhesives applied too heavy never fully cure under the covering, so resist the urge to lay more than the notch gives you. Keep the edge true: a V spreader's whole accuracy lives in the notch profile; dress a rolled or dinged edge with a file held square, and retire the blade when a notch tooth is worn or nicked, because a worn meter quietly under-delivers on every job after it. Wash before it sets — organic mastics and construction adhesives clean up on their label's schedule, and a blade left to skin loses its meter to a crust you'll have to pry off (and pry a notch out of true in the process).

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What does the 1/4" × 5/32" mean?
The first figure, 1/4", is the notch width — the size that sets how much adhesive the V meters. The second figure is the catalog's remaining dimension for the notch; the packet gives no official key for reading it as depth versus spacing, so we quote it and don't interpret it .
Can I set floor tile with it?
No — floor tile wants cementitious thinset combed with a square notch (19050/19070). This V spreader is for wall tile in mastic, plus wallboard and metal work.
Why a V and not a square?
A V carries about half the adhesive of a same-width square, which is exactly what thin-bodied mastic and panel adhesive want; a square would lay too heavy a bed for them.
Do I need this or the plastic one?
If you'll do this kind of work more than once and want a tool that cleans up and lasts, this carbon-steel Value Series blade; if it's a one-time solvent-adhesive job, the plastic 05532 you can throw away.
How do I keep it?
Wash it before the adhesive skins, keep the notch teeth square and unnicked, and retire the blade when the meter wears — a worn notch under-delivers silently.
