Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • A tool you keep. If you'll bond rubber or plastic repeatedly and want a spreader that washes and lasts, buy the steel 19100, not this.
  • Tile, wallboard, and metal. That is the V-notch trades' work (the 05532 plastic V, or the steel V spreaders); a fine square is the wrong geometry and this tool's duty is rubber and plastic, not tile.
  • Floors in thinset. Cementitious floor tile wants a deep square (19050/19070); a 1/16" cube starves it.
  • Sheet vinyl and VCT. Resilient flooring goods have their own fine vinyl meters (19120, 19060, and kin); the rubber/plastic duty here is a different pail from vinyl sheet.
  • Heavy or bodied adhesive. A fine square lays a lean even film; a thick-bodied adhesive that wants a generous combed bead belongs on a wider-notched tool.

How the pros run it

01

Angle ~45°, one direction, straight ridges

A fine square is unforgiving of a steep angle or a heavy hand — either one over-delivers and squeezes film out past the edges of a tread or a laminate seam. Flash discipline is the label's, not this page's: contact adhesives bond on a timed tack window read by fingertip — the film grabs the touch without wet transfer at working tack — and joining too early floats the piece on wet cement while joining too late (skinned over) starves the bond. Ventilation and no ignition sources while spreading and flashing solvent-based contact cement: the vapor is flammable, and a disposable blade changes nothing about the air — follow the adhesive label's fire warnings, which outrank this page. Use a fresh spreader per pour on a long job; the molded edge softens with use and is a one-job meter by design.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What's it actually for?
Bonding rubber and plastic sheet goods — rubber flooring, treads, base, mats, plastic laminate — with contact or specialty adhesive, metered as a thin even film.
Why plastic and disposable?
Contact and solvent adhesives don't clean off a blade easily; at this tool's cost the right move is to spread, let it skin, and throw it away rather than reclaim it.
Is it as good as the steel 19100?
For a single job, yes — same meter, same film. The steel one is the buy if you want to keep and reuse it; the plastic edge softens with use and is a one-job meter.
What do the three 1/16" figures mean?
The first is the notch width; the other two are the catalog's remaining dimensions, quoted without asserting which is depth and which is spacing .
Can I use it on tile or vinyl flooring?
No — tile/wallboard is the V spreader's job (05532/steel V), and sheet vinyl wants its own fine vinyl meters. This one's pail is rubber and plastic.
Any safety note?
Ventilate and keep ignition sources away when spreading solvent-based contact adhesive, per the label.
