Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Floor tile, large-format tile, wet areas. A 1/16" square is a fine bed; it starves a big or floor tile, which needs the deep square ridges of the 19050 (medium) or 19070 (large/quarry/pavers) in cementitious thinset — a different adhesive class that also carries the wet-cement alkalinity caution this small mastic tool does not.
  • Bodied mastic combed as a heavy bead. If the adhesive is thick-bodied and wants a generous combed film, the open 1/4" V (04124) is the right meter; a fine square under-feeds it.
  • Resilient sheet goods. Sheet vinyl and VCT want the vinyl-duty fine U/square meters laid paint-thin (19120, 19060, and kin); this tool's duty is tile, wallboard, and metal, not resilient flooring.
  • Rubber and plastic sheet bonding. That is a different fine square's job — the 19100 and the plastic 05534 carry the "rubber and plastic materials" duty; the 04126 does not.
  • The throwaway solvent job. A solvent-based contact adhesive you won't clean up after belongs on a one-piece plastic spreader (05534), not this carbon blade.

How the pros run it

01

Angle discipline is half the meter

Roughly 45°; flatter starves, steeper over-delivers and squeezes up through mosaic joints — the exact failure a fine square is bought to avoid, undone by a careless angle. One direction, straight ridges. Don't press the meter bigger by leaning weight into the blade; let the notch set the volume and the covering do the collapsing. Keep the notch square: a fine square's teeth are small, and a nick or a rounded corner shows up immediately as a thin, patchy bed — dress the edge true with a file, and retire the blade when the teeth wear. Wash before it sets — a skinned crust in a fine notch is nearly impossible to clear without deforming the meter.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
How is this different from the V-notch 04124?
Same tool, different notch. The 04124's 1/4" V lays a heavier tacky bead for bodied mastic and panel work; this fine 1/16" square lays a thin even bed for mosaic, small tile, and flat panel/metal films.
What do the three numbers mean?
The first, 1/16", is the notch width. The other two are the catalog's remaining dimensions; there is no official key for which is depth and which is spacing, so we quote them without interpreting them .
Can I set a mosaic backsplash with it?
Yes — this is one of the better small tools for it, because the fine square grabs the sheet without squeezing adhesive up through the mosaic joints. Use mastic on a dry-area wall; keep floors and wet walls to thinset.
Will it set floor tile?
No. A fine square starves a floor tile — that job wants a deep square (19050/19070) in thinset.
Steel or plastic — which fine square?
If you'll reuse it, this carbon-steel Value Series blade; for a one-time rubber/plastic contact-adhesive job, the disposable plastic 05534.
