Abrasive synthetics as a daily diet — that rounds the carbon edge, and the honest move is the HSS 62450 in the same pattern rather than flogging this one.
Dense grabby stock that rolls a flat edge — that is the bevel grinds' backing (the 6-1/2" × 3/4" bevels, 62600 class).
Reach — the 9" 086 does the long draw; the 088 at 6-1/2" is a bench-and-edge blade, not a reach blade.
Close 5/8"-and-under work around shoulders and bearings — the narrower 087/081 fit where the 3/4" 088 won't.
On long edge trims the 3/4" blade's advantage is directional stability — set it against the straightedge and draw; don't fight it into a saw. The width is doing tracking work a narrow blade can't.

Short exposure for wrap and bale work, longer for edge trims
Set the blade out just past the material for bale-and-wrap cutting so it can't dive; extend it a little more for a long drawn edge trim where you want continuous edge in contact. Re-extend as honing wears it back.

Hone the flat
The single-plane grind lays clean on a bench stone; keep the bevel flat, lift the burr, don't round it over. A Standard 088 takes its edge back many times before width or temper is gone.

Wipe it dry
Carbon steel over damp or sized goods wants the end-of-run wipe and a film of oil if it sits.

Why default a new 3/4" station to the 088?
Because it is the only 3/4" pattern in the line Hyde also makes in HSS (the 62450) — standardize here and a future abrasive-stock upgrade stays inside the same pattern number.
Is the 088 different from the BG20 (62660) or BG71A (62720)?
Not on any listed spec — all three are 6-1/2" × 3/4" × .072" flat Standard. We don't invent a difference the catalog doesn't record; the only reason to prefer 088 is its HSS twin.
What about the 2607 (62480)?
Same 3/4" × .072" flat Standard, a half inch shorter (6" vs 6-1/2"). Shorter is stiffer and fits tighter quarters — that's the entire difference.
What's the 088 best at?
Broad-work: straightedge selvage and roll-goods edge trims, opening bales and wrappers, stripping outer layers from soft rolls — jobs where a full 3/4" of stable edge earns its width.
When do I upgrade to the HSS 62450?
When abrasive or synthetic stock dulls this carbon blade faster than the price difference; the same-pattern swap makes it painless.
