Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not the abrasive-synthetics blade — polyester cord, glass-filled fiber, and rubberized stock abrade a carbon edge faster than honing can keep up, and that duty belongs to the high-speed-steel patterns.
  • Not the dense-and-grabby blade: material that would roll a thin flat edge, or glancing cuts into hard stock, want the bevel grind's backed edge (62600/62750 class), not this flat one.
  • Not a reaching blade — the 9" 086 (62180) owns that.
  • And not a knife you buy finished: the BG20 is a bare blade for a handle, not a riveted one-owner tool.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Exposure is your stiffness control

Clamp the blade short for controlled, stiff cuts and extend it only for reach; re-extend as honing shortens it. The flat grind wants a flat stone. Draw the single-plane edge on a bench stone, keep it square, strop the burr off the back — the grind is flat, so flat-stone honing keeps it true instead of un-designing it. Dry it after wet work. High-carbon steel rusts where stainless does not; a wipe-down after oily or damp cutting is part of the blade's upkeep. Mind the clamp. Set screws checked tight, exposure no longer than the cut — the mill blade's safety lives entirely in its clamp.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What is the difference between BG20, BG71A, and 088?
On every listed measurement — length, width, thickness, grind, steel — none. They differ by pattern number, which is a plant spec, not a shape you can measure. Reorder the pattern your station already runs.
If I'm starting fresh, which should I pick?
For a new station, 088 (62420) is the safe default because it also exists in high-speed steel (62450); standardizing there keeps an abrasion upgrade inside one pattern. BG20 is equally good for the cutting itself.
Is it stainless?
No — Standard high-carbon steel. It hones easily and holds a keen edge, but it must be kept dry against rust.
When would I not want this blade?
When the stock is abrasive enough to burn carbon edges fast (go high-speed steel), when the material is dense and grabby (go bevel grind), or when you need reach (go 9" 086).
Does it come with a handle?
No. It is a bare blade that clamps into a 3/4"-capable handle (63085 or 63080) by a slotted set screw.
