How to Control Between-Change Service for a Standard Mill Blade
It identifies flat- and bevel-grind product families. This guide does not turn “ground and honed” at manufacture into permission to invent an edge treatment at the mill.

Job: decide whether a Standard mill blade may receive between-change edge service; route a sound, identified blade through a separately authorized process when one exists; and prevent an unknown, damaged, or unsupported blade from returning to work.
Result: either the exact blade is documented as having passed a current released service and inspection process, or it is identified, segregated, and given a disposition without speculative grinding or honing.
A missing work instruction is not a delay estimate; it is a stop condition.
Difficulty: low for identification and state control; qualified-work only for edge treatment. A worker who can use a mill knife is not automatically authorized to maintain its edge.

Everything else the controlled job requires: a current released instruction that names or expressly covers the exact blade and grind class; the exact abrasive system and setup named by that instruction; the abrasive maker’s current operating and care information; a stable maintenance station; condition lighting and any inspection aids required by the instruction; clean-state and dirty-state controls; an approved cleanup route; a quarantine location and tag; a replacement-blade route; a maintenance record; a named disposition owner; and workplace-selected protection based on the actual task and hazards.
Admit the blade by identity, not by resemblance
Record the model, pattern, grind label, dimensions, incoming station, reported symptom, and current status before cleaning or service changes the evidence.

The table deliberately separates what the blade is from how an edge may be serviced. “Flat grind” and “bevel grind” are manufacturer product-family identities. Neither label, by itself, supplies the facet count, side symmetry, factory angle, abrasive presentation, or burr-removal method. The three 6-1/2" × 3/4" flat Standard patterns—62420, 62660, and 62720—remain three ordering identities with no authored physical discrimination. The 62090 and 62300 remain separate patterns with the same listed attributes. Do not use one blade as an uncontrolled master for another.
If the model or pattern cannot be established, if the blade has been reshaped so it no longer agrees with its record, or if a local identifier conflicts with the accepted model record, mark it IDENTITY HOLD. Do not sharpen “the closest thing.”
Remove it from ready status and preserve the incoming condition
Move the blade into the maintenance-control state before inspection.
Record the reported reason for service in observable language: increased force, tearing, skipped cutting, visible edge reflection, impact, corrosion, contamination, or a failed local acceptance check. “Needs honing” is a requested action, not a diagnosis.
Before cleanup, note:
exact model and pattern;
station and material last cut;
whether the blade contacted an unintended hard object or machine element;
whether another person already worked the edge;
whether heat, powered abrasive, chemical, or corrosion exposure is suspected;
whether any piece of the blade may be missing; and
whether the blade arrived loose, uncontained, or with an unclear status.
If missing metal could have entered product, process material, or machinery, begin the plant’s foreign-material or equipment-response procedure. Restoring the remaining edge would not account for the missing piece.
Clean only through an approved material-compatible route
Condition cannot be judged through fiber, adhesive, rubber, finish, oil, corrosion product, or abrasive residue. But “clean it first” does not authorize a solvent, soak, brush, air pressure, temperature, rust remover, or dwell time.
It must address the blade, the cut material, downstream contamination risk, worker exposure, waste, and complete removal of cleaning residue.
If the contamination is unknown, if the approved cleaner is not established for the process, or if cleaning would erase evidence needed for an incident or foreign-material review, stop and hold the blade. Do not sharpen through residue and do not escalate chemistry until the steel looks clean.
Inspect condition before asking what abrasive to use
Use the lighting, magnification, fixtures, and acceptance criteria in the plant’s released instruction. Do not touch-test the edge or use skin, a fingernail, or hair as test media.
Inspect the complete blade for observable conditions that require a decision:
identity remains legible and consistent with the controlled record;
no visible crack, bend, twist, missing segment, or impact damage;
no suspected heat alteration or powered-grinding damage;
no corrosion or pitting whose acceptance is unresolved at or near the edge;
no previous work has erased the readable edge geometry;
the point, end, and working profile have not been changed;
the blade is clean enough for the authorized inspection; and
the remaining dimensions fall within the separately released acceptance limits.
Choose one disposition:
No edge service: the blade passes the plant’s functional and condition checks after approved cleaning.
Authorized between-change service candidate: identity, condition, and geometry pass, and a current instruction expressly covers the model or justified grind class.
Specialist evaluation: ordinary service is not authorized, but a qualified provider has a controlled evaluation route.
A work instruction is usable only if it closes the decisions that Hyde leaves open. Confirm that the current released version names:
the exact models or a documented product class that clearly includes them;
the admitted incoming conditions and explicit stop conditions;
the exact abrasive or service system, its condition check, and its required fixture or support;
the factory or controlled edge geometry to be preserved;
presentation, side sequence, direction, pressure, and stopping method;
wet, oil, dry, or other medium and its process compatibility;
burr detection and removal;
permissible material removal and remaining-blade limits;
inspection equipment, test media, and pass/fail criteria;
operator qualification and requalification;
cleanup, residue removal, corrosion control, and storage;
task-specific PPE and station controls; and
A generic knife-angle chart does not qualify. Those statements are contextual explanations, not a released factory process.
Send the blade to the designated qualified provider or replace it under the plant’s MRO decision.
Execute only the separately approved between-change service
This guide adds no motion, angle, abrasive, pressure, pass count, burr target, or removal allowance.
At minimum, the operator records:
blade model and pattern;
work-instruction identifier and revision;
abrasive system and controlled setup identifier;
operator and time;
incoming condition and admitted service lane;
process completion without unauthorized deviation;
post-service inspection and functional-test result;
cleanup and state transition; and
Stop immediately if the blade does not present as the instruction expects, the abrasive or fixture is damaged or wrong, contact cannot be controlled, heat or unexpected material removal appears, geometry becomes uncertain, a defect opens, or the operator must deviate to make the process “work.” Do not rescue a failed controlled process with an uncontrolled second process.
Powered grinding remains outside this guide. That regulation does not provide a Hyde blade geometry or authorize powered restoration.
After approved service, repeat every inspection and test required by the released instruction. Do not substitute “feels sharp,” visual polish, a paper slice, or a lower cutting force for the named acceptance test.
Release requires all of the following:
exact identity is retained;
the authorized process and revision are recorded;
no unauthorized geometry or material-removal claim is needed;
the required functional test passes;
abrasive, swarf, cleaner, and other residues are removed;
the blade is in the required clean and storage condition; and
ready status is applied by the person who owns that decision.
Anything less is quarantine.
Cleanup, storage, and state control
Use the released cleanup process to remove all abrasive, swarf, marker, compound, cleaner, lubricant, and inspection media. Verify the residue standard required by the material or process the blade will return to.
Store blades only through the plant’s approved system.
If rust or contamination returns in storage, investigate the cleaning and storage path. Do not answer recurring corrosion with more abrasive removal. If a serviced edge changes during storage or transport, it requires a new inspection before issue.
What goes wrong—and the controlled response
“We have always used this stone.” Tradition does not supply the missing angle, abrasive suitability, or removal limit. Locate the current released instruction or stop.
“Flat grind means lay the whole blade flat.” The product-family label does not establish the maintenance contact surface or factory edge geometry. Do not infer a stroke from the name.
“Bevel grind means follow the visible facet.” Visibility does not prove facet count, side symmetry, angle, or permissible removal. Require the model-appropriate instruction.
62360 arrives for Standard-blade service. Its steel designation is conflicted.
A BG20, BG71A, or 088 is used as the master for another. Listed equality does not prove unlisted geometry equality. Preserve exact pattern identity.
The blade becomes bright but still fails the approved test. Do not continue removing steel.
A defect appears during service. Stop, preserve the condition, and route to the disposition owner. Sharpening is not crack, bend, corrosion, or heat-damage repair.
The blade passes an easy improvised test but not its process test. It fails. Only the released acceptance method can return it to ready status.
Cleanup residue remains. Repeat the approved cleanup and inspection route; do not wipe the edge on clothing or return a contaminated blade.
Safety boundary
In a covered workplace, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.242(a) makes the employer responsible for the safe condition of employee-used tools. 29 CFR 1910.132 requires workplace hazard assessment, suitable PPE selection, fit, and training where applicable; 29 CFR 1910.138 makes hand-protection selection specific to the task, conditions, duration, and identified hazards.
Those are real boundaries, not a PPE recipe. Protection does not authorize edge contact, make the support hand a clamp, or substitute for a controlled escape path.

Do all ten products receive the same honing method?
Exact identity, grind label, dimensions, condition, and the coverage of the released instruction determine admission.
Why link all ten if this guide may stop before honing?
Is “ground and honed” a factory maintenance instruction?
It describes manufactured condition. It does not state how a user may reproduce or maintain that condition.
The ten product guides contain contextual authored trade language about honing, but their own verification registers say Hyde’s edge angles and grind geometry are unpublished. A contextual explanation is not a released maintenance specification.
Can the flat-grind members share a generic bench-stone procedure?
Can 62360 and 62750 share a bevel procedure?
Not from the product-family label alone.
When should the blade be serviced?
When the plant’s controlled inspection or functional test routes it to service.
Does this guide authorize re-extension in a handle after service?
Fit and set is a separate registered job, and no handle or compatibility product link is added here.
Quarantine the unsupported service candidate and use the plant’s approved replacement route. Replacement is more defensible than speculative steel removal.
