Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not soft-fiber slicing — yarn, thread, tow, and light cloth cut with least drag on a flat grind, not a bevel; the flat patterns are the right tool and cheaper.
  • Not the budget answer to a rolling edge: if the stock rolls a flat edge but is not abrasive, the Standard-steel bevel (62750) does the mechanical work without the HSS premium.
  • Not the contour blade — tight curved trims want the limber .058" bevel (62875), not this stiff .072".
  • Not a corrosion solution, and not a finished knife.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Hone the facet, not the flat

A bevel edge is maintained by working the angled facet — match the existing bevel, strop the burr off the back, and keep the registration angle honest; laying a bevel blade flat on a stone destroys the grind. HSS resists the stone. High-speed steel is harder and more wear-resistant than carbon, so it takes more effort and a proper abrasive to bring back — the same property that makes it last. Set exposure to the cut and re-extend as the blade wears. Dry it after wet work — HSS is a tool steel, not stainless; it resists heat and abrasion, not rust. Clamp discipline: set screws tight, exposure no longer than the cut.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
What does the bevel grind do for me?
It backs the edge with more steel, so it resists rolling on dense, grabby material and glancing cuts that would deform a thin flat edge. Flat blades slice soft stock with less drag; bevel blades survive hard stock.
And the HSS?
Wear life against abrasive material. Together — bevel plus HSS — this is the blade for stock that both rolls and abrades an edge.
Does "15 Gauge" mean it is thinner or thicker than the 16-Gauge BG183M?
We do not say — the gauge tag's meaning is unresolved on the record and does not track thickness consistently across this line . Both blades are listed at .072". Treat the tag as a pattern label, not a spec, until Hyde defines it.
Is it stainless?
No — HSS resists heat and abrasion, not rust. Keep it dry.
Does it come with a handle?
No — it is a bare blade for a 3/4"-capable handle (63085 or 63080).
