PRODUCT FIT · IS THIS THE RIGHT TOOL?Straight answers. If it's the wrong tool for your job, we'll say so.
The guidance below describes applications and limitations. For a match to your particular job or an existing tool, ask us to confirm fit.
Abrasive-stock endurance and dense-material cutting.
The 62300 is Standard carbon, so a daily diet of filled synthetics, cord, or rubberized fabric will round its edge faster than it is worth honing — that is precisely why the 087 pattern also exists in HSS (62330), and the honest move is to use it rather than flog the carbon blade.
It is not the dense-stock blade either: material that grabs and rolls a thin flat edge wants the bevel grind's backing (the bevel 087 is the 62360).
It is not a reach blade (86 is the 9"), not a stub (the .109" heavies), and not a specialist of any kind — the 087 is the generalist, and its value is that it hands you the specialists in its own pattern number when you need them.
The 62300's whole economic case is that its edge is renewable — touch it up at the bench between changes rather than pulling a fresh blade, and re-extend it in the handle to use up the steel.
02
Hone the flat flat
The single-plane grind self-jigs on a bench stone: lay the bevel down, keep the angle honest, lift the burr off the back, and don't round the edge over. Keen and flat is the target.
03
Short exposure for close cuts
Working close to a roll or frame, set the blade out only as far as the cut needs — short is stiff and controlled; long is for reach the 087 isn't the blade for.
04
Wipe it dry
Carbon steel over damp fiber, size, or finish blooms rust; end-of-run wipe, oil film if it sits. The upgrade blade (62330) is the one that shrugs off harder use — but that's a wear-life story, not a rust story.
Asked before buying
BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why choose the 087 over another 5/8" pattern?
Because 087 is the only pattern in the line offered in all three forms — flat carbon (this blade), flat HSS (62330), and bevel (62360) — so a station can upgrade steel or change grind without leaving the pattern number.
When do I step up to the HSS 62330?
When abrasive or synthetic stock dulls this carbon blade faster than the price difference justifies. Until then, the honable 62300 is the cheaper blade to run.
When do I switch to the bevel 62360?
When the material is dense and grabby enough to roll this flat edge; the bevel puts more steel behind the edge for that stock.
Is the 087 the same blade as the 081 (62090)?
On every listed spec, yes. We don't invent a difference the catalog doesn't record; the practical lean toward 087 is only that it has HSS and bevel siblings the 081 lacks.
How do I keep it cheap to run?
Hone the flat edge on a bench stone between changes and re-extend the blade as it wears — the renewable edge is the whole reason to buy Standard steel.
