Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE THIS WHEN
  • The documented job is “The Honest Everything-Else Duty Class”.
  • Flexible Blade: Ideal for applying compounds, smoothing, and scraping.
  • High-Quality Carbon Steel Blade: Hardened for durability and long-lasting performance.
  • Overmold Comfort Grip: Provides a comfortable and secure hold during use.
DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Removal and force.
  • A flexible blade cannot deliver a scrape: push it into failed paint or cured glazing and it bows away from the work instead of lifting it, and lever on it and you'll take a set in the blade or snap it.
  • Scraping the blistered paint before you fill is the stiff knife's job — in this same series, the 1-1/2" stiff 06158 or the 2" stiff 06308.
  • The overmold grip has a second boundary worth stating: a soft cushioned handle and hot solvents are natural enemies, so a knife destined to soak in lacquer thinner or sit in a stripper bucket belongs in nylon (Black & Silver) or hardwood, not in this comfort grip (Hyde makes no solvent claim for the overmold).
  • And it is not a finishing trowel — for wiping a patch's final skim to nothing on smooth drywall, the extra-limber SuperFlexx 06107 does what this standard flex can't.

How the pros run it

01

Grip

cradle the handle in the palm with the thumb along the top for pressure control on the wipe pass; the overmold makes a light, steady grip sustainable over many holes. The two-pass rule: steep to pack, flat to wipe — press the compound into the defect first, then flatten the blade and shear the excess off, letting the flex feather the edges. Load light: a smaller bead wiped twice beats a big bead you fight. Carbon-blade care is real and specific to this knife: high-carbon steel takes and holds a keener, straighter working edge than stainless and hones back easily, but it rusts. Wipe it dry the moment you're done with any water-based compound; left wet in a tub of spackle, a carbon blade will bloom orange and can bleed a faint gray-brown streak into white filler on the next patch. That one habit is the tax for the carbon edge — and the reason a stainless sibling exists for people who won't pay it (see §5). Edge maintenance: keep the edge clean and straight; a nick or a curl telegraphs a line into every wipe, and a few strokes on a fine stone or a light dress with a file restores it.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Is this for applying or scraping?
Applying. It's a flexible fill knife — press compound in, wipe it flush. For scraping paint first, use the stiff 06158/06308.
What's the difference between this and the 2" (06222)?
Only width. 1-1/2" for holes and trim; 2" for bigger patches and flat field. (§5)
Carbon or stainless — which should I buy?
Carbon (this knife) hones keener but must be wiped dry; the stainless 06108 needs no such care with wet compound. (§5)
What's the Hammer Head for?
Tapping popped nails back down and dimpling holes so you can fill them with the same tool. (§2d)
Can I use it on lead paint?
Any light scraping this flexible blade does in a pre-1978 building falls under the same lead-safe boundary as the rest of the family — assume old paint is lead, contain and wet the work, follow EPA RRP practice on pro jobs.
Will it rust?
Yes, if left wet — it's high-carbon. Wipe it dry after water-based compound. (§3)
