This guide handles the remainder after named jobs are separated out. A vague request, “versatile” family claim, or remembered shortcut grants no permission.
The admitted duty has two narrow lanes. All four candidates may be considered for placing or smoothing an identified surface-repair or finishing compound when the compound maker, substrate or finish system, and job instructions permit a flexible metal putty knife. Separately, exact Hyde facts make 04060 and 04101 light-duty scraping candidates and 06101 a scraping candidate. That family-level verb supplies no compatible residue, material, substrate, actuation, angle, motion, or removal procedure. If any condition is unknown, stop.
What belongs here—and what does not
The small admitted class
A request can remain in this guide only when all of the following are true:
The desired outcome is application or smoothing, or it is a specifically authorized scrape using one of the three manufacturer-supported scraping candidates. Cutting, lifting, opening, probing, striking, and leverage remain excluded.

Examples are a bounded placement or smoothing step for an identified repair compound, or a scrape that the identified material and surface system expressly assign to an eligible candidate. These are classifications, not procedures. The responsible instructions still control preparation, loading or removal method, working time, contact, completion, cleanup, and disposal.
The words “small,” “quick,” and “light” do not admit a task. A quick pry is still leverage. Unknown adhesive remains a compatibility problem.
Named work leaves the remainder class
When the task can be named, use the named guide. This guide should not flatten distinct jobs into “miscellaneous putty-knife work.”
These routes are not interchangeable. A product link in several guides does not make their material and substrate systems equivalent.
Scraping branch and explicit exits
Treat scraping separately, then reject or reroute the listed exits:

Approach energized equipment, conductors, receptacles, batteries, or electrical assemblies. The accepted sources provide no insulation or electrical-safety claim.
A feature claim is not permission to improvise a striking procedure.
Unknown use is not a fifth candidate. It is a failed diagnosis.
Diagnose the request before opening the drawer
Write or say one plain sentence: “I need to [outcome] an identified [material or condition] on [surface or assembly].” If the blanks cannot be filled without guessing, the task is not ready.
Then ask these questions in order.
What is the outcome?
“Make it better” is too broad. Application and smoothing can remain provisionally admitted. General removal, penetration, leverage, opening, lifting, cutting, mixing, electrical contact, food contact, and chemical transfer exit.
Do not rename an excluded action to keep it in the graph. “Smooth off a label” is still removal; “apply a little glue” is still adhesive application.
What exactly is the material?
Read the container or authoritative job specification. Confirm the compound or residue rather than relying on color, texture, location, or an unlabeled jar. Hyde’s broad application, smoothing, and model-specific scraping roles do not establish compatibility with any particular substance.
If the material is unlabeled, mixed, cured unexpectedly, contaminated, or remembered only as “filler,” do not test it with a candidate. Quarantine or dispose of it under the material’s responsible rules, or obtain authoritative identification.
What receives the material?
Identify the substrate and every coating, finish, membrane, seal, glazing, veneer, hardware, or adjacent surface the blade could touch. Material suitability and metal-blade contact are separate questions.
This guide supplies no compatibility table.
Is this already a named job?
Use the sibling routes above. Named guides hold the preparation and finish logic that this remainder class intentionally lacks. Is the tool type expressly admitted?
For application, look for the material or system’s direction to use a flexible metal putty knife or equivalent applicator. The facts establish no scraping actuation, angle, motion, compatible material, compatible substrate, or removal method. They also establish no blade thickness, sharpened edge, precise flex value, chemical resistance, food safety, electrical insulation, or safety certification.
Choose 04060 when the admitted job favors its narrower 1-1/8-inch width and an economy, light-duty or one-time-use tier. Hyde identifies its flexible spring-steel blade and polypropylene handle. Width and tier do not prove fit, digging, probing, leverage, or a scraping procedure.
Choose 04101 when the admitted job favors 1-1/2 inches with the same economy, light-duty or one-time-use position. Its honest distinction from 04060 is listed width, not blade thickness, edge, force, technique, or scrape suitability. Use a stopped fit/contact check.
Choose 02100 when the admitted job favors the 1-1/2-inch width and the Black & Silver professional tier. Hyde identifies a flexible high-carbon-steel blade, full-tang construction, and durable nylon handle. Its accepted family roles include applying compounds, smoothing, and taping in tight spaces.
Full-tang construction and “professional” positioning do not authorize leverage, striking, scraping, or waived controls. Unlike the other three rows, 02100’s accepted facts do not name scraping.
Choose 06101 when the admitted job favors the 1-1/2-inch width and Pro Project overmold handle. Hyde identifies a flexible hardened carbon-steel blade, HammerHead® family feature, and applying-compounds, smoothing, and scraping roles.
Conflict escalated, not inherited: the linked 06101 guide absolutely denies scraping in its removal boundary at lines 54–56, yet its FAQ admits light scraping at line 82.

There is no honest winner without a diagnosed task. Availability or familiarity cannot overrule a failed use gate.
Prior-use and contamination separation
A clean-looking blade is not a known-history blade. Identify what it contacted and how it was cleaned; no visible residue or odor does not prove compatibility. Keep known duties separated.
When history is unknown:
Segregate the tool from the ready drawer.
Do not use a trial contact to discover whether residue transfers.
Consult the prior material’s cleanup and disposal instructions if the material can be identified.

If 1-1/2 inches does not fit, compare 04060’s 1-1/8-inch width only after every other gate passes. If neither fits, use a specified tool outside this graph. If metal contact is not admitted, leave the graph; smaller metal is still metal.
Legitimate qualitative handling
Once task, material or residue, surface, candidate, history, inspection, and stopped fit all pass, use the responsible material, surface-system, and named-job instructions as the actual procedure. This guide adds only bounded controls:

Stopping is correct when it prevents a familiar tool from inheriting an unproven job.
Cleanup, inspection, and storage
Follow the used material’s cleanup, protection, waste, and disposal instructions. Hyde establishes no universal solvent, wash, or chemical-compatibility rule for these tools.

Reinspect the blade, corners, connection, and handle. Store only a clean, dry tool in a labeled known-duty area. Segregate damaged, modified, corroded, contaminated, or unknown-history tools. A dedicated lane never means “safe for everything.”
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a paint can with one of these?
Not under this guide. Opening is a leverage task. Use the opener specified for the container and coating system.
Can I lift a staple or tack?
Lifting is prying, and hidden fastener condition or load is unknown. Use a purpose-built fastener-removal tool and the responsible surface procedure.
Can I remove a sticker, dried drip, paint spot, or caulk bead?

History: why the flexible knife is not every thin-tool job
Hyde’s official anniversary history dates the company to 1875 and says Hyde released the flexible putty knife in 1927 for repairing plaster-wall imperfections after wallpaper removal. The same timeline places the Black & Silver professional line in 1930. That history ties the form to surface repair; it does not make every household improvisation part of the design.
