Procedure boundary: this guide supplies qualitative doer technique only after the actual trim substrate, existing coating, defect, repair material, primer or sealer, topcoat, tool contact, and work conditions have been admitted as one system. It supplies no generic filler chemistry, blade geometry, defect-size threshold, preparation recipe, sanding schedule, cure time, recoat time, paint-compatibility promise, or hazardous-coating disturbance method.

Job: close known nail, brad, or pin-fastener holes in already painted interior trim, preserve the trim profile, and return each admitted repair to the exact coating system without a sink, ridge, halo, or unsupported compatibility claim.

Result: each location has a diagnosis and admitted system; the selected tool passes a stopped contact check; and the repair survives fill, strike, feather, the material maker’s next-stage gate, and finish readback.

Time: no universal duration applies. The repair-material and coating instructions control usable state, cure, sanding readiness, primer or sealer readiness, recoat, handling, and return to service. Appearance and touch are not those gates.

Difficulty: the motion is small. The work is admitting the defect and system, preserving the profile, and reading the final sheen under honest light.

Diagnose the mark before treating it as a hole

Start with clean light across the trim, not filler on a blade. View normally and under raking light. Record the member, substrate, coating condition, mark type, and surrounding profile.

Admit only a known empty cosmetic fastener hole

This guide applies when the mark is traceably an empty hole left by a known nail, brad, or pin fastener; the surrounding trim and coating are stable; the repair is cosmetic; and the exact system accepts the substrate, defect, and finish sequence. “Brad hole” describes origin, not diameter, depth, filler choice, or number of passes.

Stop on a proud, loose, or moving fastener

A metal point, head, raised paint cap, recurring dimple, or movement is not an empty hole. Establish what the fastener secures and obtain the responsible repair method. The 06101’s HammerHead® does not authorize driving an unidentified fastener.

Stop on a split, open joint, or failed substrate

A line from the hole, lifted fiber, separated joint, loose return, delamination, swelling, corrosion, soft material, missing edge, or crumbling prior repair is not a simple fill. Moving, split, degraded, or wet material requires its responsible repair.

Identify the trim and coating

Painted trim may be solid wood, engineered wood, fiberboard, polymer, metal, an existing repair, or another specified product. Its coating may be factory- or field-applied. Acceptance on bare wood does not prove acceptance over paint; “paintable” does not prove compatibility with the existing or planned coating.

Hazard and performance stop

Do not scrape, sand, drill, widen, wet, heat, or disturb an unidentified coating. If work could disturb paint in covered pre-1978 housing or child-occupied facilities, use the applicable determination and controls under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Program. Stop for suspected asbestos, contamination, rated construction, moisture, biological growth, or unidentified performance requirements. This page clears no hazard.

The repair is a chain. Every link must agree before work begins.

Confirm that cosmetic filling is allowed.

They must admit the actual substrate, remaining coating, hole condition, exposure, preparation, application method, depth or lift arrangement where relevant, and following finish.

Confirm permitted preparation, next-stage readiness, and compatibility in both directions. A filler manufacturer’s “paintable” statement cannot replace the coating manufacturer’s rules.

The OSHA mandatory SDS format locates identity, use restrictions, hazards, handling, exposure controls, incompatibilities, and disposal information. It does not make fillers interchangeable.

If the documents conflict, stop. Do not average instructions, borrow a cure time from another product, assume all “wood fillers” share chemistry, or use paint compatibility from a different primer or topcoat.

Make a witness repair when finish matching matters

On consequential or unfamiliar work, use representative scrap or an approved inconspicuous witness location. Carry it through preparation, fill, strike, authorized leveling, primer or sealer, topcoat, cure, and viewing.

Judge the witness in ordinary and raking light for plane, profile, color, sheen, texture, edge transition, stain, and adhesion. Approval does not transfer across different systems.

If no representative witness is possible and finish matching is consequential, the missing proof remains a hold. A neat wet fill is not a finish test.

Admit one tool by evidence and a stopped contact check

Match the tool or its traceable packaging to one of the seven exact models. Inspect it under the tool owner’s released criterion. Quarantine unresolved residue, corrosion, deformation, loose or damaged handle parts, edge damage, or unknown prior chemistry.

Perform a clean, no-material check where permitted. Without forcing, confirm that the intended working portion can:

approach the hole while keeping prohibited blade, handle, rivet, or grip surfaces clear;

sit across sound local trim without bridging the profile or touching an adjacent wall, glass, hardware, joint, or finished return;

carry a controlled amount to the hole;

leave along a controlled path without a corner gouge or profile flattening; and

permit direct inspection of the filled center and feather boundary.

Choose the smallest candidate that passes only if the system permits that rule. If several pass, follow the project rule; if none passes, use none. Do not reshape a blade to force admission.

Prepare only what the exact system authorizes

Remove or mask hardware only when that action is authorized and will not damage the finish or assembly.

Recheck the stop conditions immediately before contact. Perform only the named surface preparation. This guide does not authorize sanding, scuffing, scraping, cutting a crater, undercutting, solvent wiping, deglossing, priming, sealing, or exposing bare substrate. “Give it tooth” is not a procedure.

Remove dust or contamination only by the exact system’s method. A visibly clean painted surface can still carry polish, oil, silicone, incompatible cleaner, or weak coating. If cleaning changes gloss, softens paint, transfers color, raises fibers, or exposes another layer, stop and disposition the changed surface.

Condition the repair material exactly as directed. Do not add water, solvent, pigment, paint, sawdust, catalyst, or another filler unless the product maker expressly permits it. Hold expired, skinned, separated, contaminated, improperly stored, or abnormal material under its own instructions. Dispense a controlled working portion; return nothing to the source unless allowed.

Run the load–place–strike–feather loop

The exact product sequence controls. Where it permits a qualitative hand-tool method without values, use this loop.

Take only enough material for one controlled placement onto the admitted working portion. Keep the load compact so the hole remains visible and surrounding paint is not needlessly coated. If the material strings, crumbles, separates, skins, runs, stains the tool, or otherwise behaves outside its instructions, stop rather than changing the recipe or adding pressure.

Bring the load directly to the admitted hole. Deposit material into the opening rather than dragging a broad film across the trim. Work from a direction that keeps the tool supported on sound local profile and clear of adjacent surfaces. Do not use the blade to probe, enlarge, or diagnose the cavity.

Pause after placement. If material disappears into an unbounded void, will not remain, exposes movement or moisture, or reveals loose substrate, stop. The location has left the cosmetic-hole class.

While the material remains in its maker-authorized working state, cross the repair with controlled contact that removes excess while leaving the opening full. The strike succeeds when the center remains closed and the tool has not created a flat, ridge, scoop, or surrounding smear.

If the fill pulls out, do not repeat harder. Determine whether placement was incomplete, the surface or tool was contaminated, the material had left its working state, the blade did not fit, or the defect was unbounded. Use only the exact rework branch.

After the center survives striking, reduce the outside edge with progressively lighter local contact. Keep the transition inside the admitted margin. The aim is not to spread filler farther; it is to end the repair without an abrupt shoulder.

On shaped trim, preserve one profile element at a time and keep intact work as the visual gauge. If the repair requires a broad patch field, repeated overlapping wipes, or reconstruction of a bead, arris, cove, or missing edge, stop. That is a profile-repair job, not a nail-hole fill.

Wet-state readback

At the system’s named inspection point, check the repair under declared light for an open center, pulled fill, ridge, tail, hollow, flattened profile, smear, stain, contamination, adjacent-surface contact, coating damage, or a new stop condition.

Assign PASS TO CONTROLLED HOLD, REWORK AUTHORIZED, or STOP — SYSTEM DISPOSITION REQUIRED.

Hold through cure, leveling, and recoat gates

Leave the repair undisturbed until the material maker admits the next operation. Do not infer readiness from surface color, touch, hardness at the edge, or another product’s schedule.

At the named intermediate gate, inspect for sink, cracking, separation, pinholes, staining, or profile loss. Repeat only an authorized lift; otherwise use the maker’s rework route.

Sand or otherwise level only when the exact repair and coating system requires it and supplies the method. Support the abrasive or leveling tool to preserve the trim geometry, work only the repair margin, and stop when the named criterion is met. Do not invent a grit, wet-sanding route, dust-control method, or “sandable after” time. If leveling would disturb an unidentified legacy coating, return to the hazard stop.

Remove residue by the finish system’s named method. Apply primer or sealer only after the repair system admits it, then topcoat only at the exact recoat gate. Keep repair-material cure, primer readiness, topcoat recoat, handling, and final service as separate decisions.

Match the finish, not merely the color

An invisible trim repair has two acceptances: geometry and finish.

First read the plane and profile under raking light. A color-perfect spot still fails if it casts a ridge or hollow. Then view straight on under ordinary light for color, sheen, texture, opacity, lap, and edge transition.

Use the exact approved finish and method. Existing paint may have aged or changed sheen; a stored can with the same name is not proof of a match. A close color can remain visible because filler, primer, old paint, and new paint absorb and level differently.

Recoating the full face, full trim member, or defined break may be the honest finish-matching solution, but this guide does not authorize that scope automatically.

Final acceptance requires the repair to remain closed and stable through the coating system’s named final stage, with no sink, ridge, halo, stain, adhesion loss, texture change, or profile damage and with required records complete.

What goes wrong — and the controlled recovery

The mark is raised instead of empty. Stop. Diagnose the fastener and attachment; do not cap it with filler.

A line runs from the hole. Treat it as a possible split, joint failure, or movement path.

The material vanishes into the hole. The repair is not proved bounded. Stop feeding the cavity.

The fill pulls out during the strike. Use the exact material’s rework branch. Repeated force is not adhesion.

The repair sinks at the next gate. Use another lift only if the exact system permits one. Persistent loss calls for reclassification, not an endless fill cycle.

The blade leaves edge tracks or a flat across molding. The contact check failed. Stop and select another admitted tool or method; do not sand away trim to hide a mismatch.

The surrounding paint lifts, softens, stains, or transfers. Stop. Preparation, material, cleaner, or tool contact is incompatible or unproved.

The filled spot is smooth but flashes after paint. Separate geometry from finish. Follow the exact primer, coating, and witness-approved correction; do not add coats blindly.

The color matches but the sheen does not. Confirm the exact coating, condition, application method, and authorized blend scope.

A repaired hole reappears. Recurrence is evidence of movement, shrink, adhesion failure, or an unbounded defect. Return to diagnosis.

The repair shows only in side light. Re-read profile and plane before changing color; a flat but dull or bright island is a finish-system issue.

Cleanup leaves color or residue on the next repair. Quarantine the tool and affected work. Visible wiping is not proof of chemical or color neutrality.

Cleanup, storage, and waste

End tool contact while the exact material’s authorized cleanup route remains available. Keep source material, working portion, cured or uncured reject, wipes, dust, cleanup output, and contaminated protection separated and identified.

A solvent-resistant handle statement does not authorize immersion, indefinite exposure, or any unnamed cleaner.

Close and store repair, primer, and topcoat products only as directed. Dispose of residues and contaminated materials through the exact SDS, label, local rule, and project plan. This guide authorizes no sink, drain, soil, ordinary-trash, recycling, or hazardous-waste route.

Update the repair record with final disposition, tool model, material and finish identities, batch where required, witness or acceptance evidence, and any hold.

Which of the seven Hyde knives should I use?

Models 02005, 02000, and 02100 have the strongest manufacturer-family support because Hyde expressly names filling nail holes. The other four remain conditional applying/smoothing candidates. Width helps identify the exact tool; it does not decide compatibility or fit by itself.

What filler should I use on painted wood trim?

Use only the exact repair product admitted by the actual substrate, remaining coating, exposure, and finish system. This guide does not choose by generic class name.

Should I sand the paint around the hole first?

Only when the exact repair and coating system requires it and the coating has passed the hazard determination. This guide supplies no universal abrasion step.

How long before sanding, priming, or painting?

Use the named gate in the current instructions for the exact repair material, primer or sealer, and topcoat under actual conditions. “Looks dry” is not a gate.

Can the 06101 HammerHead® set a proud trim nail?

The feature exists, but this guide does not authorize its use on an unidentified fastener. Establish the fastener’s role, substrate, and approved setting method first.

Why does a smooth repair still show after touch-up?

Filler, primer, old coating, and new coating can differ in absorption, texture, color, and sheen. Recheck geometry under side light, then follow the witness-proven finish correction. The honest solution may be a larger defined coating break.
