Job: roll approved doors, cabinet parts, and built-in fields to the smoothest repeatable finish the exact substrate, coating system, cover, frame, site conditions, and operator test can legitimately produce.
Time: no universal schedule is safe. Disassembly, cleaning, repair, primer, coats, inspection, turning, cure, and reassembly each depend on the exact assembly and current product instructions. Build the calendar from those instructions and the witness panel, not from “same day” or “overnight” folklore.
Difficulty: advanced. A large flat face is easy to wet; it is harder to keep contamination, edge buildup, lap bands, profile pools, and late reworking out of the dry result.

Define “near-spray” before choosing a roller
A successful result is not “looks smooth while wet.” Define a dry-finish target: continuous color and sheen, acceptable texture, clean profiles, no disruptive laps, shoulder ropes, sags, contamination, or sticking after the stated service condition.
That is a comparison to the project standard, not to spray application. The processes place material differently and can leave different texture. If the specification requires a sprayed sample, measured industrial finish, or factory-match process, route to that specification rather than renaming a rolled result.
Choose an approved sample door, retained factory panel, or witness panel under project lighting. Record sheen, color, viewing distance, and unacceptable defects. “Near-spray” without a reference becomes an argument after reinstallation.
Diagnose every substrate, coating, and assembly
Inventory each part:
Solid wood or veneer: identify grain, resin, movement, failing clear finish, and veneer thickness. A roller cannot erase grain or restore sanded-through veneer.
MDF, hardboard, particleboard, or plywood: find swelling, crushed holes, fuzzy fiber, weak edges, seams, and telegraphed repairs.
Laminate, melamine, thermofoil, or another bonded skin: check for lifting, heat damage, shrinkage, and blisters. A loose skin is a repair boundary.
Steel or other metal: identify rust, factory coating, treatment, and repaint restrictions.
Fiberglass, vinyl, plastic, or unknown skins: stop until the maker or coating system establishes permission.
Then map the existing coating: bare substrate, sound factory finish, clear finish, wax or polish, sound repaint, chalking, rust, peeling between coats, peeling to substrate, or unknown. Broad adhesion failure, active moisture, rot, delamination, swelling, moving joints, or corrosion beneath the film must be resolved before finish work.
Treat these as functioning assemblies. Mark mortises, bores, catches, slides, pin holes, bumpers, seals, glazing, electrical parts, drainage, labels, vents, and designed contacts. Visibility is not coating permission.
If preparation can disturb paint in pre-1978 U.S. housing or a child-occupied facility, establish the lead-safe route before making dust. Covered paid work belongs under the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting Program; homeowners should use EPA’s lead-safe DIY guidance. This guide does not authorize uncontrolled sanding or scraping of suspect paint.
Make the exact coating system the gate
Obtain the current instructions for the actual product and color/base, not a remembered rule from another can. The coating maker and assembly maker must resolve:
permitted substrate and existing-finish condition;
cleaner, residue removal, deglossing or abrasion, and repair method;
required primer and whether primer and topcoat form an approved system;
approved applicator type, including whether the proposed fiber or foam cover is allowed;
mixing, straining, additives, reduction or thinning—if any;
application direction, coat structure, wet-film or dry-film requirement—if specified;
temperature, humidity, ventilation, ignition control, PPE, and respiratory requirements;
working state, dry, recoat, correction, handling, cure, blocking, and return-to-service gates;
cleanup, rag handling, storage, and disposal.
This guide intentionally supplies no universal film thickness, pressure, additive, thinning ratio, abrasive or sanding schedule, dry/recoat/cure time, ventilation, PPE, or rolling direction.
Marketing is not system approval. Hyde’s surface and sheen statements shortlist covers; they do not prove coating compatibility, frame fit, adhesion, leveling, blocking resistance, food-contact suitability, or final texture.
Remove, map, and protect hardware
Operate moving parts before disassembly. Photograph gaps, rubs, latch/hinge alignment, travel, catches, stops, and contacts to distinguish existing fit problems from coating or reassembly faults.
Remove knobs, pulls, latches, hinges, shelf pins, catches, bumpers, drawer faces, doors, and removable shelves only where removal is permitted and the method is understood. Support heavy, glazed, self-closing, fire-rated, or unfamiliar doors before releasing hardware; use qualified help when the assembly requires it.
Map each door and drawer by opening, position, orientation, and face. Containerize hardware by label; record shims, adjustments, handed parts, and screw lengths. Keep labels off coating areas.
Mask or exclude everything that remains: hinge knuckles and mortises, latch and fastener holes, drawer slides, shelf-pin holes, labels, seals, glazing edges, electrical hardware, moving joints, and designed contacts. Decide which door edges are in scope from the assembly and coating instructions; do not assume all six planes receive the same system.
Build and qualify witness panels
The witness panel is the admission test for the complete system. Make it representative of the actual substrate, old finish, repair, edge treatment, primer, color, sheen, and geometry. A leftover scrap of unrelated bare wood cannot qualify a factory-finished door.
Run the exact proposed cleaning, repair, abrasion, primer, coating, frame, cover SKU, staging, conditions, lighting, and contamination controls. Include a field, edge, and profile when the job contains them.
Carry the sample through every specified evaluation state. In agreed lighting, check the dry finish for approved adhesion, color/sheen continuity, texture, bubbles, fibers, debris, laps, shoulder tracking, profile pools, edges, sags, and relevant contact behavior. Do not invent a scratch, tape, or early handling test.
If the panel fails, change one diagnosed variable and repeat. Possible variables include substrate preparation, primer, coating choice, cover class, exact frame fit, load control, sequence, environment, or operator handling. Do not “solve” a failure by adding undocumented thinner, conditioner, pressure, coats, heat, or airflow.
Retain the accepted panel and record products, available batch identifiers, conditions, sequence, operator, date, and decision. Production begins only when the assembly matches it.
Select a verified cover and prove the frame fit
Start from the smallest evidence-backed shortlist that can cover the geometry:
Large, open smooth fields: 47309, if its 1-1/2" core has an exact frame and the 9" assembly clears the geometry.
Compact fields: 47312 or 47313, selected by quantity, not an invented performance difference.
Conditional longer nap: 47319, only when its 3/8" nap fits the system and its core-description conflict is resolved.
Foam trial: 47348 or 47349, selected by quantity, only when coating and frame permit.
Unresolved exact models: keep 94008 and 94010 out of operational selection until manufacturer evidence identifies their exact construction, use, and fit.
Prove the assembly dry. The cover must mount as directed, seat without improvised force, turn true, stay laterally controlled, clear the arm, and remain retained. Width alone and plausible fit do not establish a model-to-model pairing.
Rehearse access on clean scrap or the dry witness geometry. Confirm the cover can land on its face rather than one shoulder, traverse fields, clear rails and profiles, and leave the work without striking an adjacent plane. A jumbo-mini, conventional mini, foam cover, and 9" 1-1/2"-core cover are not interchangeable merely because all are called rollers.
Control dust and contamination
Separate dirty preparation from finish application. Clean before directed abrasion so grease is not driven into the surface. Isolate residue and use only a permitted collection or wiping method. Tack cloths, solvents, compressed air, and pre-dampening are not universal.
Clean the room, racks, supports, lights, tools, clothing, and traffic path. Inspect edges, corners, profiles, bores, bays, and part backs. Exclude pets, fibers, machining, sweeping, and debris-carrying traffic.
Use clean vessels and protect bulk coating. Prepare a cover only as directed; do not assume washing, dampening, taping, or “de-linting.” Keep the arm and cover ends clean.
Provide ventilation and PPE exactly as the label, SDS, site assessment, and applicable rules require. CPSC’s Healthy Indoor Painting Practices reinforces following product directions and ventilating to outdoor air. Odor is not an exposure meter. Do not direct improvised airflow across a wet finish: it can carry contamination and change working behavior.
Stage faces, edges, and profiles before loading
For removed parts, use stable supports that carry the part without racking it, marking a finish face, blocking required ventilation, or putting hands beneath an unstable load. The coating and assembly instructions control whether a part may lie flat, stand, hang, turn, or contact a support, and when it may be flipped. “Dry every door flat” is not a universal rule.
For hung doors, secure movement without defeating required fire, egress, closing, or security functions. Protect jambs, floors, adjacent doors, and hardware. Plan how the door remains safely open until its stated close/contact gate.
Divide the work into bounded elements:
slab or recessed-panel fields;
rails, stiles, mullions, and face frames;
molded or routed profiles;
shelf and cabinet planes;
returns, inside corners, and details the roller cannot honestly reach.
Rehearse a sequence that keeps hands, tools, supports, and wet edges from colliding. The assembly geometry and coating’s permitted working state control the order. A common useful logic is to complete inaccessible profiles and bounded fields before surrounding rails, then finish open fields and approved edges—but use it only where the exact product and construction permit it. Do not carry wet film across a natural break just to follow a generic direction.
Load, place, lay off, and read back
Mix, strain, condition, or decant only as directed. Load the cover across its working face and meter free excess in the tray or vessel without crushing the cover. Rotate it before touchdown. A cover that skids, wobbles, migrates, or sheds visible debris has failed the setup gate.
Place coating with the cover moving. Distribute the load across one manageable bounded element while the film is in the coating’s permitted working state. Keep the frame square enough that one shoulder does not become a squeegee. Use only the force needed to maintain rotation and controlled contact; this guide supplies no pressure target.
Watch the boundaries. Remove a forming shoulder rope, corner pool, edge bead, or rollover while the coating still permits correction. Recharge before a starving cover creates repeated dry bands. Do not use the roller to excavate deep profiles; use the approved detail tool and merge textures only while both films remain legitimately workable.
Lay off only if the system and witness panel validate it, in their established direction. One light pass may organize placement; repeated passes over setting film can increase texture, lift material, or create laps.
The same gate controls brush “tipping.” Use it only when the coating permits the tool and the witness panel proves a better dry result. Otherwise stay with the qualified roller process; late tipping can replace roller texture with brush marks.
Move the raking light without touching the work. Read back each element for missed areas, debris, bubbles, edge buildup, profile pools, and abrupt texture changes at the moment correction is still authorized. Then leave the film alone. A bright reflection is useful evidence, not permission to keep working a coating that has begun to set.
Handle defects at the coating maker’s repair gate

Between coats, inspect only at the stated inspection or recoat condition. Correct by the named method, remove residue by the approved method, and repeat only the qualified sequence. “Dry to touch,” “ready to handle,” “ready to recoat,” “ready to close,” and “fully cured” are different gates.
Cure, reassemble, and prove function
Keep parts on their authorized supports and maintain required environmental controls through the applicable dry, handling, turning, recoat, cure, and service states. Do not stack doors, rest a finished face on padding, reinstall bumpers, close a painted door, load a shelf, or wrap parts merely because they feel dry.
Before assembly, inspect coating at mortises, holes, hinge seats, drawer edges, shelf ends, and contact lines. Added film can change tight clearances. Correct only by the assembly and coating maker’s permitted method; do not force a hinge, pin, latch, drawer, or door through new film.
Reinstall each labeled hardware group in its recorded position and orientation. Restore shims and adjustments. Operate every door and drawer, verify reveals and latch/catch function, and check that labels, seals, drainage, ventilation, electrical parts, and required closing behavior remain intact. Compare the installed finish with the retained witness panel under the agreed lighting.
The job closes only when the coating has reached the required service state and the assembly performs its original duties without unwanted contact. Appearance alone cannot close a functional door or cabinet criterion.
Follow the coating label and SDS for tools, spills, rags, working material, containers, and waste. Water cleanup is correct only for a product that directs it; a named solvent is correct only under that product’s precautions. Never use gasoline as a cleaning solvent.
Remove the cover by the frame and cover makers’ method without splashing or bending the frame. Clean a reusable cover only when its maker permits reuse and supplies a compatible process. Do not claim that foam is disposable or fiber is indefinitely reusable; neither follows from this row’s accepted evidence.
Remove coating from the frame’s rotating and retaining surfaces before it cures, using only the authorized cleaner. Keep contaminated working material out of the clean reserve. Store retained coating sealed and labeled under its instructions.
Remove masking at the product-controlled stage. If film has bridged an edge, use the authorized separation method rather than tearing the finish. Clean the rack and room only when that work cannot deposit debris into curing surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Does “near-spray” mean indistinguishable from spraying?
It is a finish goal judged against an approved sample, not equivalence.
Which cover is automatically best?
47309, 47312/13, and 47314 are documented smooth-surface candidates; 47319 and 47348/49 are conditional. The complete tested system decides.
Can I put any 4-inch cover on my 4-inch frame?
Width is not the mounting interface. Establish exact fit before loading.
Why are 94008 and 94010 linked but held?
The graph requires them, but accepted evidence proves only their family-page listing—not construction, application, coating compatibility, or fit.
Should I thin the paint, add conditioner, pre-wet the cover, or sand between every coat?
Only when the exact product instructions direct the exact action. This guide supplies none of those as generic technique.
Must I tip the rolled finish with a brush?
Qualify tipping on the witness panel only when the coating permits it. Late or unsupported tipping can create a different defect.
