Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Not abrasive stock — filled fiber, cord, and abrasive rubber wear a carbon edge fast, and that is where the HSS bevels (62600/62630) earn their price over this blade.
  • Not soft-fiber slicing, which wants the least-drag flat grind, not a bevel.
  • Not tight-contour trimming — the limber .058" bevel (62875) follows curves the stiff .072" BG57 cannot.
  • Not a corrosion solution, and not a finished knife.
  • Buying the BG57 for abrasive duty is the one clear misuse: it will cut, but it will dull faster than the job wants.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Hone the facet

A bevel edge is maintained by working its angled facet at the existing angle, stropping the wire edge off the back; laying it flat on a stone destroys the grind. Standard carbon steel takes that edge back quickly, which is the advantage you bought. Re-extend as it wears. Recover the length the stone removes by extending the blade in the handle — steel a riveted knife would have retired. Keep it dry. High-carbon steel rusts where stainless would not; wipe it after damp or oily cuts. Clamp tight, expose short — the set screw is the blade's only safety.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why choose the BG57 over the HSS bevel blades?
Cost, where the material allows it. The BG57 gives the same backed bevel edge in honable high-carbon steel — cheaper per blade and quick to rehone — which is the right buy when your stock rolls a flat edge but is not abrasive enough to wear a carbon edge fast. If it is abrasive, the HSS bevels last longer and pay back.
Is the bevel the same as on the HSS blades?
The grind geometry is the bevel grind in all three; the difference this guide claims is the steel, not the bevel angle (which Hyde does not publish ).
What does "15 Gauge" mean?
Unresolved — the tag does not track thickness consistently in this line, so treat it as a pattern label, not a dimension . The blade is .072" thick.
Is it stainless?
No — Standard high-carbon steel. Hones easily; keep it dry against rust.
Does it come with a handle?
No — it is a bare blade for a 3/4"-capable handle (63085 or 63080).
