Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • The everyday latex wall job where a plastic tray is lighter, quieter, and rust-proof — for water-borne paint, plastic-plus-liner is the whole answer, and the metal tray's weight and rust risk buy nothing.
  • Height work — it has no ladder mount; latex at height is the 92054's job.
  • High-capacity work — it's a 2 L tray, half the reservoir of the 4 L jumbo (92067); it trades capacity for chemistry, not the other way around.
  • Between-coats covered holds — no cover, and you wouldn't cap solvent vapor anyway.
  • And it is not a plastic tray with a metal price — if nothing on the job is solvent-borne and nothing steps on the tray, the metal is over-buying.

How the pros run it

01

Match the tray to the chemistry, not the color

the 92060 is chosen for solvent coatings; that's its selection axis. Line it for solvent cleanup and for any latex run — the 92061 carries solvent mess out and keeps rust off light paint. Ventilate for real, and treat the rags as a fire risk — the solvent-safety kit rides with this tray. Scrape, don't gouge — cured paint comes out of metal with a stiff knife; that's a feature you can't use on plastic. Dry it before storage — the one maintenance ritual metal asks and plastic doesn't.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why buy a metal tray when everything else is plastic?
Chemistry. Metal shrugs off the solvents — mineral spirits, xylene, epoxy components — that soften and craze a plastic tray. It's the tray for alkyd, oil, and solvent-borne coatings (2a).
Can I use it for regular latex paint?
Yes, but line it with the 92061 — a scratched or long-wet metal tray can rust and stain light waterborne paint. For latex, a plastic tray is usually the simpler choice; the metal earns its place on solvent work.
Does the plastic liner survive solvents?
For a job, yes — it's a cheap consumable, so a run's worth of solvent exposure is fine. If a solvent is aggressive enough to distort even the liner, run the metal tray bare and scrape it out afterward — the fallback plastic trays don't have.
How much does it hold?
2 liters (store-listed, and corroborated by its 2 L liner). Half the 4 L jumbo — it's a chemistry tray, not a capacity tray .
Any safety issues with solvent coatings?
Real ones: ventilate properly, and never ball up solvent-soaked rags — they can spontaneously combust. Seal them in metal or dry them flat outdoors (2a).
How do I make it last?
Dry it before storing (wet metal rusts) and scrape cured paint out with a stiff knife instead of digging at it. Kept dry, it outlives every plastic tray in the line.
