Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Solvent-borne coatings — this is plastic, so hot solvents craze it, and rolling alkyd or oil off a ladder is a bad idea on its own; solvent work is the metal 92060's job, ideally not overhead.
  • Jumbo-capacity height work — 4 L of paint doesn't belong mounted to a ladder; the 92067 jumbo stays on the floor.
  • Ground work where you'll never use the mount — on the floor the 92054 is just a 2 L tray with hardware you're not using, and the plain 92069 does that for less.
  • Between-coats holds — no cover; that's the 47452's trick.
  • Fundamentally, the 92054 is a height tool; use it at height or use a simpler tray.

How the pros run it

01

Both hands for the climb

the whole point; mount the tray, then climb, never climb holding paint. Underfill on purpose — keep the 2 L well below the brim so ladder flex doesn't slop it. Line it and clean on the ground — run a 92055, peel it down below, never wash at height. Buy the liner by this tray's number — a shifting off-size liner up a ladder is the accident this tray prevents. Latex at height, not solvent — see §4; a ladder is the wrong place to roll solvent coatings at all.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What makes it a "ladder" tray?
It's shaped to attach to a ladder so the reservoir rides secure and both hands stay free for climbing and rolling (2a) — instead of being carried up (dangerous) or perched on a shelf (unstable).
How exactly does it mount?
Unverified — the attachment hardware and which ladders it fits aren't stated in any source. Read it off the physical tray before relying on a specific mount.
How much paint does it hold?
2 liters (from the store listing, and supported by its 2 L liner). A sane reservoir for height — not the 4 L jumbo, which is too heavy to mount.
Does it take a liner?
Yes — the 92055, molded to this tray's well and no other. Line it, and clean up or change colors on the ground by peeling the liner.
Can I use it for oil-based paint?
No — it's plastic (solvents craze it), and rolling solvent off a ladder is a bad idea regardless. Solvent work → the metal 92060.
Is it worth it if I mostly paint from the floor?
No — on the ground it's a 2 L tray with an unused mount; buy the plain 92069 instead. The 92054 earns its price only at height.
