✕CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Coverage work. Doors, cabinet ends, open panels, and every field wider than a few lanes — the inch given up is pure cost there; the 4" pair (92005, or Hyde 47401) and the tiers above own it.
  • Sub-3" targets. Muntins, glazing bars, 2" stiles, quirks and beads: brush country, stated without embarrassment.
  • Slot-access problems. When the approach is the constraint — the gap behind a radiator, the last inches beside an appliance — width doesn't help; the wire 47400 does.
  • Pole work, as sold . Threading undocumented, never asserted; height jobs route to the documented Hyde column.
  • Wall fields, obviously — but said once: the 9" tier and 18" 47420 are the coverage machines; the 3" is their opposite pole.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

Load for the width

A 3" cover holds less paint than the tray habit expects — lighter loads, more trips, and wipe the shoulders every time; on narrow targets the shoulders are always one lazy load from printing. Lay off everything. Narrow work is close-viewed work: every lane gets its unloaded pass in the long direction, and at this width lay-off passes cost seconds. Square beats clever. The whole point of the width is rolling square to the target — if you find yourself angling the 3" to dodge an edge, the target is below its floor and the brush takes over. Cage care, standard and non-negotiable: seat to the stop, straight pulls, rinse the four rods until water runs clear, spin, dry. A narrow cage wobbles from dried film exactly like a wide one, and shows it faster at eye level.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Why buy a 3" when the 4" is right there?
Because your problem is placement, not coverage: stiles, casing-side strips, tight bays, pipe bays — targets a 4" cover overhangs and prints (2b). If nothing in your house produces that sentence, buy the 4".
Is it just for touch-ups?
No — it is for narrow targets. Touch-up texture matching is its own art and belongs to the Hyde 47402's full-core trick (that guide, section 2e).
How narrow is too narrow for it?
Below about 2-1/2" of target, the overhang returns and the brush wins — the honest floor (2b).
Cabinets: this or the 4"?
Both, by zone: tight bays and edges → 3"; open backs and sides → 4" (2a). Deep boxes → the 16"-handled 92011.
Is there a Hyde 3" alternative here?
No — the 92012 is the line's only 3" frame; the width itself is its discrimination.
Which covers fit?
Richard publishes no roster — buy covers stating 3" cage-frame fitment and run the hand test (2c).
Does it thread onto a pole?
Undocumented — never asserted for Richard frames; the documented pole column is Hyde 47400/47401/47402.
