Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Long flat runs where reach and flank width govern — the full-inch, 4"-long straight (66060) puts more blade on a broad flat face; the 66030's compact size is a detail advantage, not a coverage one.
  • Heavy long-pull deflashing on large parts — the offset (66090) keeps the hand clear through a long stroke the straight handle cannot.
  • Throughput vent-trimming of production tread rows — that is the five-groove pin trimmer's swath job (65060).
  • Precision detail where the curved tip is beside the point — on dead-flat bench work a square-tipped straight (66330) is the simpler equal; the curve only earns its keep on contour.
  • And it is not a repair knife — it finishes healthy parts; the injured-casing work belongs to the K770 skiver (61350) and the H2T taper point (61260), other lines.

How the pros run it

01

Lead with the tip into a sweep

On contoured work the tip enters first and follows the surface down as it curves; letting the tip guide the arc is what keeps the notch presented through the whole stroke. Keep the flanks flat — never lift the trailing edge. As with every V-trim, raising the back of the blade to force the cut drives the notch walls into the surface and gouges it; the geometry only protects the surface when the flanks ride flat. Pull the notch along the protrusion, not into it — a running cut that feeds each spew or the flash ridge into the V, not a chop. Match the compact blade to the work: at 3-1/2" this is a detail-scale straight, best on spot dressing and contoured passes rather than long flat runs, where a wider straight carries a steadier flush cut. Sharpen the notch on its walls: a slim slip stone or fine tapered file drawn to follow the V, burr stropped off the outside face; a flat bench stone used alone only rounds the flanks and un-designs the knife ⚑(notch-honing is authored trade knowledge — no Hyde maintenance text — carried per line doc / application-queue job maintain-a-v-trim-notch). The blade is high-carbon; dry it after wet work or it blooms rust.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What makes this different from the other straight V-trims?
The curved tip — it is the only member of the line that has one. It keeps the notch presented to the work as the blade sweeps across a crowned or contoured surface, where a square tip lifts off at the tangent (intent authored from the name and geometry).
When do I want the curve?
On contour: tire crowns, molded radii, barreled surfaces. On dead-flat work the curve is beside the point, and a plain straight (66330) does the same job.
Is it a different size from the others?
It is the compact straight at 3-1/2" × 3/4"; the plain straights are 3-15/16" (66330) and 4" (66060). Smaller footprint, detail scale.
Can it deflash molded parts?
Yes — especially on contoured faces, where following the surface matters. The catalog-named deflashing knife is the offset 66090; the 66030 brings the curved-face version.
How is it different from the 66090?
Same blade size, opposite trick: this one curves the tip for contour; the 66090 offsets the blade for clearance on long convex pulls.
How do I sharpen the notch?
On its inside walls with a slip stone or tapered file following the V, burr off the outside face; never a flat bench stone alone . Dry the carbon blade after wet work.
