A vent spew is the narrow rubber projection formed where compound enters a mold vent during cure. It is evidence that the mold breathed; it is not automatically a defect, and it is not automatically scheduled for removal.

The correct hand cut is local:

identify one approved spew → straddle it with the V → pull through the root → inspect the surface → move to the next.

Establish the finish requirement

Ask for the controlled requirement by tire family and zone:

leave spews intact;

remove them from tread only;

remove from a defined visible zone;

trim to an approved witness;

prepare for a specified inspection;

exclude lettering, codes, repair marks, or sidewall features.

Do not infer the requirement from another tire. Modern tires often ship with spews present, and harmless hairs wear away in service. Trimming is a manufacturing/retread finish decision.

No Hyde claim states which tires require trimming.

Receive a released tire

Begin only after the cure/retread process releases the tire from the mold, envelope, pressure, heat, and machinery.

protected repair/marking zones.

Never reach into a mold, press, conveyor, or inflator with a knife. OSHA’s machine-guarding rule and hazardous-energy rule support the equipment boundary.

Scan before cutting

Rotate the whole tire under raking light.

Separate normal narrow spews from:

broad parting-line flash;

torn or undercut vent root;

bare/incomplete mold contact;

crack, blister, void, or separation;

trapped foreign material;

exposed cord/reinforcement;

Tag and hold questionable conditions. A V-notch may remove the visible projection and make the underlying evidence harder to recognize.

Do not “clean up” an abnormal root before quality sees it.

Read the exact four patterns

All four accepted blades are .065 inch thick.

66030 H212: Straight V-Trim Curved Tip Knife; 3-1/2 × 3/4 inches.

66060 213: Straight V-Trim Knife; 4 × 1 inch.

66330 3787A: Straight V-Trim Knife; 3-15/16 × 11/16 inch.

Pattern strings are opaque. Preserve them when a plant specifies one.

Select by access and posture

Start with the controlled plant pattern. Where a new local trial is authorized:

flat/gently curved, accessible surface → 66060 or 66330;

crown/convex long pull where knuckles collide → 66090 trial;

broad repeated rows → use the separate gang-trim job, not improvised multi-spew sweeps.

The 66090’s accepted rubber/plastic application wording does not specifically approve tire spews.

Witness the chosen knife on matching cured scrap/held work.

Mount the tire in its inspection plane

Use a stand that prevents rolling/tipping and allows controlled indexing.

Set height so:

the spew root is visible;

the V can lie tangent;

the wrist remains neutral;

the pull ends in clear space;

the support hand stays behind a fixture boundary;

the knife can return to a protected rest.

Rotate the tire to the operator. Do not reach around the circumference or hold the tire between legs.

Do not load a hot/soft feature or a repair zone with the stand.

Map different surface zones

Treat tread, shoulder, and sidewall separately.

Tread: blocks, grooves, sipes, and pitch changes interrupt flank support.

Shoulder: curvature changes quickly; use short strokes and frequent repositioning.

Sidewall: visible smooth areas and molded markings make knife tracks obvious.

Approve exact zones and exclusion landmarks. A knife proved on a tread block does not inherit sidewall approval.

Inspect the edge and tool

confirm model/pattern;

inspect V sides and root;

check for chip, rounding, bend, corrosion, or packed rubber;

inspect handle, ferrule, and rivets;

verify no unauthorized regrind;

clean through the approved method;

protect every unused knife.

A notch with one side shortened will pull off center. A loose handled knife is not repairable by grip pressure.

Quarantine uncertainty and use a verified tool.

Prove the first capture

Choose one ordinary accessible spew on representative released scrap/held tire.

Mark the protected surface around its root.

Present the V over the spew.

Seat both blade flanks as the local geometry allows.

Plan a short pull past the body/off hand.

Draw steadily without twisting.

Stop immediately after severing.

inspect the root under raking light.

compare with the approved sample.

Do not press the outer blade edge down like a scraper. Cutting must occur inside the notch.

If the spew tears or stretches, inspect cure/state, edge, presentation, and target classification before trying again.

Control the root result

The goal is not “as low as possible.” It is the controlled finish requirement.

undercut below surrounding surface;

glossy/shaved track;

displaced surface texture;

crack extending from the vent;

remaining sharp/proud material.

Do not take a second deeper pass automatically. An undercut cannot be put back.

Where a gauge or limit sample exists, use it. Touch alone cannot distinguish a tiny proud witness from a crater reliably.

Move spew to spew, not one long blind sweep

Single-notch trimming is a rhythm of discrete captures.

lift/reposition without dragging an edge;

look at the next root;

maintain the approved travel direction;

stop before groove/sipe/lettering transitions;

rotate the tire instead of rolling the wrist;

park the knife before moving the stand.

A long surface sweep risks feeding detail or sound rubber into the V. Use the gang process only where its separate qualification exists.

Work around tread detail

Near sipes and grooves, both flanks may lose support. Shorten the stroke or exclude the feature.

bridge a groove while pulling;

hook a sipe;

shave a block edge for continuity;

trim wear indicators;

cut a molded stone-ejector or design feature;

chase a spew into a recess with the knife point.

If an inaccessible spew must be removed, qualify another tool/method. A registered model union is not an obligation to reach everything.

Work around markings and repairs

Map sidewall codes, branding, regulatory/traceability marks, repair identification, and structural repair zones.

Never remove a mark because it resembles excess at an edge.

Use short stops well before lettering. Change the tire orientation instead of cutting across the face of a character.

Photograph/record an abnormal condition before any authorized trim where the quality system requires it.

Decide straight, curved-tip, or offset from evidence

Compare candidates on identical representative features:

The 66030 and 66090 share accepted 3-1/2 × 3/4 × .065 dimensions, but one is curved-tip straight and the other offset. That makes a useful controlled comparison; it does not prove equivalent V geometry.

The 66060 and 66330 differ in width/pattern. Refuse invented preferences beyond witnessed local results.

Recognize process signals

Stop and escalate when:

spews suddenly enlarge;

roots tear across multiple tires;

one zone shows abnormal flash;

distribution changes by mold/cavity;

compound feels unusually soft/hard under the authorized state;

repeated marks occur at one station position;

knife force rises abruptly.

Separate incoming pattern from tool pattern. If every tire carries the condition before the cut, investigate upstream. If every mark appears after the same stroke, investigate tool/fixture/technique.

Do not compensate for a mold or cure trend by deepening the trim.

Build an honest acceptance ladder

Use an ordered decision rather than a vague “looks good” judgment:

Untrimmed and permitted: the finish standard allows the spew; leave it.

Trimmed and within limit: root/surface match the approved sample or specified measurement.

Rework candidate: only where the process expressly permits another controlled pass.

Quality hold: abnormal root, parent-surface damage, wrong-zone cut, or uncertain condition.

Tool/process hold: repeated marks, rising force, damaged edge, or incoming trend.

This guide supplies no numeric height, crater depth, or rework count.

Keep approved and rejected physical samples by zone when practical. A tread-block sample may not represent the cosmetic bar on a smooth sidewall. Protect samples from dirt, UV, abrasion, and casual retrimming; a worn limit sample silently loosens the process.

When two inspectors disagree, hold and reconcile against the controlled standard. Do not average their opinions or send the tire forward because the remaining hair will wear off.

Account for spew direction and base shape

Spews are not always perpendicular. Mold removal, handling, or material flow can leave them leaning, flattened, doubled, forked, or sitting at the edge of a texture.

Before capture, identify the actual root. Approach so the V closes on the approved protrusion rather than sliding along its length. A flattened spew may not present enough clearance for the notch without contacting sound rubber; that condition may belong to another method or a leave/hold decision.

Do not stand a spew upright with fingers and cut toward them. Do not twist it to expose the root. If two spews share a base or one emerges from a surface defect, stop and classify the condition.

Compare base shapes across the tire. A uniform leaning direction may reflect demolding; a single torn/flattened zone may reflect handling or process damage. The knife should not erase the distinction before inspection.

Maintain the V honestly

No accepted Hyde source provides a V-notch honing angle, abrasive, method, or interval.

Clean first. Inspect both walls, the root, and outer flanks. Route sharpening to a qualified method that follows the physical internal geometry and preserves symmetry.

flatten the outer profile;

widen the V by guess;

use a powered grinder without a controlled process;

remove a chip until the whole notch changes;

call a polished edge sharp without a witness cut.

After maintenance, repeat first-piece approval.

Protect hands and eyes

Plan follow-through before every pull. Keep the support hand behind the stand boundary and never catch the severed spew with fingers.

Select hand protection for cut/puncture, tire handling, and residual heat without sacrificing fine control.

Use eye protection where cut fragments, debris, or edge damage can create flying particles under OSHA’s eye and face standard.

Inspect and record the completed tire

Complete a full rotation under controlled light.

zones trimmed/excluded;

knife model/pattern;

abnormal incoming conditions;

trim defects/rework;

handoff to final inspection.

The trimming operator confirms the operation. Tire release remains with the qualified process.

Before leaving the station, count required zones rather than individual hairs unless the controlled method explicitly uses a count. An exact spew count is easy to lose on complex tread and can tempt the operator to remove features outside the map. Zone completion, abnormal locations, and inspection result provide a more durable record. When traceability requires a count, establish it from the tire/mold process—not from these knife specifications.

Clean the stand contact points before the next tire. A severed rubber piece under a support can tilt or mark the following casing and create a false knife-technique problem. Inspect contact pads during every cleanup.

What goes wrong (and the fix)

Every spew is removed by habit. Return to the tire/zone finish requirement.

The notch leaves a crater. Stop deeper passes; inspect geometry/presentation and affected tires.

A sidewall mark is cut. Hold the tire and restore exclusion mapping.

The V skates off a spew. Clean/inspect the edge, shorten the stroke, and re-seat both flanks on scrap.

66030 is declared a universal curved-surface knife. Restore the flagged intent and witnessed trial.

66090 is chosen despite ample clearance. Use actual posture/result evidence.

A spew is twisted off by hand. Use the controlled method; twisting can tear the root.

Abnormal vent roots are cosmetically erased. Hold and preserve quality evidence.

The tire moves during the pull. Restore the indexed stand.

Sharpening changes one V wall. Quarantine and requalify through controlled maintenance.
