  • Cutting through material. A skiver thins; it does not sever. Through-cuts in rubber, belting, or hide belong to the square points and the mill knife.
  • Heavy or forceful cutting. The .042" flexible blade is built to shave and follow, not to be driven — force will bend or damage it.
  • The tire repair itself. The K770 prepares the surface; the patch, plug, or section repair is a separate certified process with its own tools.
  • Prying, scraping, or striking — a thin flexible edge is the most abuse-averse blade in the line.
  • Heavy sole-leather skiving — the .042" blade folds under thick hide; the #3 Sole skiver (55190) at .072" is that job.

Flat, not deep

Skiving is a shallow-angle shaving cut — lay the blade almost flat to the surface and take thin layers, several passes rather than one deep bite. The flex of the .042" blade is what lets it follow the surface; work with the bend, letting the blade ride the contour. Draw, don't gouge. A drawn shaving stroke removes an even layer; a downward push digs a step. Keen edge, always. A skiver only works sharp — a dull skiver tears and skips instead of shaving — so this blade lives on the stone, honed fine and often. Follow the curve. On a tire casing or any convex surface, let the blade bend to the shape; fighting the flex is how you gouge a round surface. Maintain it: high-carbon steel, honed keen and wiped dry after wet or rubber-solvent work. A skiver is the purest example of the heritage wing's maintain-not-feed contract — its whole value is a fine, flexible, sharpened edge.

What is skiving?
