Not surface skiving — paring and abrading the surface around an injury is the flexible skiver's job (K770 / 61350), and its flex and geometry do that where the stiff taper point would not.
Not general draw-cutting or trimming — the taper's whole design is reaming from inside, so for cutting along a line the bevel point (60300) is the right general knife.
Not a plunge-start slitting tool for flat sheet — that is the lance point's symmetric piercer; the taper is for dressing and enlarging an existing wound, not opening a clean new slit.
Not heavy prying or forcing — the sharp thin point that makes it ream is the point that snaps under a lever; the 61080 stub is the abuse knife, not this.
The blade's whole logic is that width grows with depth, so control the cut by controlling how far you seat the taper — ease in for a light dressing pass, seat deeper to open the cut wider. Work in stages rather than plunging to full width at once. Ream around the perimeter, don't gouge. The motion is a controlled sweep around the wall of the injury, letting the widening edge shave the ragged rubber cleanly — not a stab and pry. Keep the point sharp and thin. Hyde's spec is "sharp, thin," and the reaming action depends on it; a dull or thickened point tears rubber instead of shaving it clean. Dress the point keen on a stone and protect it. Mind what's on the far side. Reaming a through-injury means the point can emerge; know the cavity behind the cut. Wipe dry after working over rubber solvents and cements — carbon steel, standard rust discipline.

What's a taper point for?
Reaming — Hyde's stated job is to "ream out ragged cuts in tire casings." The blade widens from its point, so as you work it into a cut it opens and cleans the wound from inside, leaving sound rubber for a repair unit to bond to.
How is it different from the K770 skiver?
Geometry and step. The taper point reams the cut from inside; the flexible K770 skiver shaves the surface around it. A tire bench uses both — ream, then skive, then bond.
How is it different from the 60300 bevel point?
Both are 16-gauge handled knives, but the taper point widens from its tip to ream, while the bevel point sweeps to a working corner to cut and start. Same steel, opposite tip jobs.
Can I use it beyond tires?
The same geometry reams and dresses pierced holes in thick rubber and dense flexible stock generally. Hyde states only the tire-casing use; the wider role is our trade reasoning, flagged as such.
