Choose Straight vs Offset for Curved Work
Its exact graph is three straight V-trim knives—66030, 66060, and 66330—and two offset patterns—66090 and the five-groove 65060.

Job: Select and prove a handled V-trim knife for flush removal of proud molding flash or tire vent spews based on surface curvature, stroke length, clearance, swath, and the plant’s controlled pattern
Time: Thirty to ninety minutes for representative trials and selection; repeat the check when part, mold, material, station, or pattern changes
Difficulty: Intermediate — selection is geometric and ergonomic, but a plausible knife can still gouge the work when its notch, reach, or documented scope is wrong
Everything else: released molded-rubber/plastic parts or cured tires and representative scrap; drawing and cosmetic/functional standard; stable support or tire stand; task lighting; approved and rejected samples; local work instructions; hand/eye protection selected for the cut and part state; cleaning and edge-maintenance system; trial sheet and quarantine route
The useful fork is not “straight is ordinary; offset is better.” It is:

Selection ends with an approved witness cut, not with this table.
Keep the rejected trial beside the accepted one until the station decision is signed and reproducible.
Define the protrusion
V-trim geometry is for material standing proud of a surface. Identify whether the target is:
a thin parting-line fin;
a heavier flash ridge;
isolated tire vent spews;
repeated tread-row spews;
a gate or sprue;
folded or smeared material;
a damaged parent edge.
The last four conditions may not belong to a single-notch hand trim. A gate, thick web, reinforcement, insert, or buried flash can need another controlled process.
Mark the protected surface beside the cut. If there is no permissible ride surface for the blade’s flanks, the selection problem is not straight versus offset.
Read the five accepted records
The straight members are:
66030 H212: curved-tip straight V-trim; 3-1/2 × 3/4 × .065 inches.
66060 213: straight V-trim; 4 × 1 × .065 inches. The accepted official identifier is 213; do not silently normalize it to H213.
66330 3787A: straight V-trim; 3-15/16 × 11/16 × .065 inches.
The offset members are:
66090 H222: offset V-trim; 3-1/2 × 3/4 × .065 inches.
65060 H1357: offset pin vent trimmer; 5 × 1 × .065 inches, with five sharp grooves.
Preserve pattern identity
H212, 213, 3787A, H222, and H1357 are controlled identifiers, not decorative names. If a plant drawing, station card, legacy sample, or purchase control names one, begin with that exact pattern and investigate before substituting.
Near dimensions do not establish interchangeability. The 66030 and 66090 share accepted blade dimensions but differ in curved-tip/straight presentation versus offset form. The 66060 and 66330 are close in length but differ in width and pattern.
Record model key and pattern together. Do not reduce all five to “V knife.”
Map the hand-clearance envelope
Place the uncut representative part in its real support. Without a blade near the work, trace the intended pull with a dull setup gauge or protected tool.
where knuckles approach the part;
whether the handle collides with crown, sidewall, fixture, or neighboring feature;
whether the wrist bends to keep the blade plane tangent;
whether the elbow runs out of room;
whether the pull crosses the body;
where the stroke ends;
whether the holding hand enters the projected cut path.
If collision happens while the working blade would otherwise lie correctly, an offset pattern is a rational trial. If there is ample clearance, offset adds no automatic benefit.
Fix the fixture first when poor orientation creates the collision.
Understand what offset changes
An offset places the handle away from the blade’s working plane. On a convex tread or molded shell, that can allow the blade flanks to remain tangent while the hand clears the crown.
Offset does not:
enlarge the V;
prove a material;
make a dull edge sharp;
permit a deeper cut;
prevent every gouge;
establish left/right suitability;
substitute for a fixture.
Confirm on the physical product whether it clears the feature without forcing the wrist into another bad posture.
Distinguish curvature from contour
Curvature describes the surface under the blade. Contour also includes where the protrusion turns, rises, disappears, or approaches lettering and recesses.
A broad crown may favor an offset handle for clearance. A tight changing contour may instead require:
a narrower flank;
a shorter stroke;
a curved-tip trial;
a different fixture orientation;
a single-notch detail pass;
Do not assume a curved tip makes a knife flexible. All five accepted blades are .065 inch thick, and none is documented as a flexing pattern.
Use 66030’s curved tip as a qualified lead
The 66030 is explicitly named Straight V-Trim Curved Tip Knife H212.
Trial it when:
a straight-tip V loses contact as the tangent changes;
the work remains accessible to a straight handle;
a single capture point is needed;
the protected surface can support both flanks.
Reject the trial if the tip lifts a flank, marks the part, hides the notch from view, or requires wrist roll that is not repeatable.
Choose between the two ordinary straights
The 66060 provides a 1-inch-wide blade at 4 inches long. The 66330 provides an 11/16-inch-wide blade at 3-15/16 inches.
Those dimensions support a physical trial:
broader flank where a broad, stable ride surface exists;
narrower body where adjacent geometry limits access.
They do not prove turning radius, contact pressure, stiffness difference, finish grade, or material preference.
When the plant controls 213 or 3787A, match it. When it does not, test both on the same representative condition and record observable outcomes: access, surface marking, residual flash, stroke control, and operator clearance.
Trial 66090 for single-notch offset work
Use the 66090 as the first offset lead for a single flash line or discrete protrusions on a convex/long-pull surface.
Its accepted catalog wording is exactly “Trim large mold flush from plastic and rubber goods.” Preserve the awkward “mold flush” wording and its ambiguity flag; do not convert it into a thickness capacity, a paraphrased exact-product scope, or assurance that every thermoplastic, thermoset, elastomer, hot part, or reinforced molding is suitable.
On representative scrap:
Support the part in production orientation.
Present the V to the protrusion.
Keep the offset from levering the near flank into the face.
Pull a short section.
Inspect the parent surface and remaining ridge.
Extend the stroke only after control proves.
The offset should restore clearance. If it merely encourages a steeper attack angle, return to fixture/straight-pattern trials.
Trial 65060 only for appropriate swath
The 65060 is an offset pin vent trimmer with five sharp grooves.
inspect the physical head;
prove which features enter the grooves;
confirm every groove clears the parent surface;
trial on released scrap;
count misses and surface marks;
keep a single-notch knife available for detail.
Do not run a multi-groove head through lettering, shoulder transitions, sipes, or irregular flash simply because it covers more width.
Run a matched witness test
Use the same part/material state, fixture, feature class, lighting, and acceptance for each candidate.

part temperature/state;
stroke direction and length;
number of passes;
operator control comments.
Do not score “speed” from one unfamiliar stroke. First establish quality and control; then compare a repeatable cycle.
Avoid tests on finished customer product when representative scrap or held parts exist.
Check the protected face under raking light
Inspect across the surface, not only from above. Raking light reveals:
shiny knife tracks;
undercut at the flash root;
whitening or stress marks;
Flex or view the part only as its inspection procedure permits. A good-looking unloaded flexible part may open an undercut when installed.
If a trim feature is functional, use its specified gauge or test. Visual “flush” is not a dimensional result.
Evaluate the complete workday
A candidate that makes one excellent cut may still be wrong for repeated work if:
the handle collides late in the pull;
the wrist must roll at every crown;
the knife obscures the feature;
removed flash catches in the head;
left/right parts require unsafe cross-body strokes;
the operator cannot return the knife safely;
sharpening cannot reproduce the geometry.
Use fixture rotation or mirrored stations where appropriate. Do not make one pattern universal merely to simplify purchasing.
Separate access, swath, and ownership decisions
Three different questions are often collapsed into one:
Can the blade reach the feature?
How many protrusions should one stroke address?
Which exact pattern does the controlled plant system own?
Straight versus offset answers mainly the first. Single notch versus five grooves addresses the second.
A 65060 may clear the operator’s knuckles and cover a broad tread row, yet still be wrong because the work contains irregular detail. A 66090 may give perfect offset clearance but remain slower than a proved gang process. A 66060 may be physically comfortable while the drawing calls for 3787A. Record each decision separately so a later improvement does not erase the required pattern.
Also distinguish knife selection from staffing and line balance. If a correct single-notch method cannot meet takt without rushing, add stations, change upstream molding control, or qualify automation; do not simply assign the broadest head. Throughput never authorizes surface damage. Conversely, do not preserve a slow straight pattern by tradition when an offset trial demonstrably improves posture and produces the same accepted trim. Local witnessed evidence may change the station choice without becoming a universal product claim.
Keep safety proportional and direct
Cut away from the hand and body, keep the support hand behind a positive fixture boundary, and protect the edge at rest. Select hand protection based on cut, puncture, heat, chemical, and dexterity exposures; OSHA’s hand-protection rule requires task- and condition-based selection.
Wear eye protection where cut fragments, embedded material, or a broken edge can fly; OSHA’s eye and face protection rule covers flying-particle exposure.
Do not trim inside a molding machine’s hazard zone. Machine access and servicing remain under the site’s guarded/energy-controlled process.
Lock the selection without overstating it
The station card should say:
exact model and pattern;
approved part/cavity/material state;
feature and stroke direction;
physical projection/condition controls, if applicable;
maintenance/change trigger;
Do not turn a local result into a Hyde material-capacity claim.
Reopen the fork when the work changes
Repeat selection after:
new part geometry;
mold revision or repair;
material formulation change;
different cure/cooling state;
repeated gouging or residual flash;
A growing force requirement is a diagnostic, not proof that the offset is too small.
What goes wrong (and the fix)
Offset is chosen as the “professional” version. Return to collision/tangent evidence; choose the simplest pattern that proves.
A straight knife makes the wrist roll over the crown. Trial offset after correcting fixture orientation.
The offset gouges the near face. Flatten presentation, shorten the stroke, or reject the candidate.
66030 is advertised for all curved work. Restore the curved-tip intent flag and witnessed-trial requirement.
65060 misses every other spew. Verify physical groove presentation; use a single-notch detail pass or reject the swath.
66060 and 66330 are treated as interchangeable. Preserve pattern and dimensions; retest.
A gate is fed into the V. Stop and use the controlled gate-removal process.
Hot material smears. Restore the material-specific released state; do not invent a cooling interval.
More pressure fixes a dull edge. Service or replace through the approved geometry.
The selected knife hides a molding defect. Hold the part and escalate the process.
The history footnote
Straight and offset trim patterns are two presentations of the same capture idea: bring a V to proud material while keeping the surrounding face outside the cutting throat.
