Three inches is the whole line's minimum, and anywhere the cut needs to travel — across a wide roll, into a machine frame, down a long lap — this blade runs out of edge and the 9" 086 (62180) or a 6"–6-1/2" blade is the right tool.
Not low-resistance soft-fiber slicing at high count: a spinner cutting yarn and thread all shift wants a light, limber flat blade (the 62030/62090 class), not a stiff .109" plank.
Not a finished knife — it is a bare blade and needs a matching handle to do anything.
And not the bevel-grind duty: where the material rolls a thin edge and wants a facet backing it, the bevel blades (62600/62750 class, or the thin 3551M) own that call — this is a flat grind, built to drive straight, not to ride a glancing load.
A stub blade is a lever you have deliberately shortened; keep the blade set out only as far as the cut is deep, and cut in short committed passes rather than long draws. Let the flat grind do the wedging. Drive straight — the single-plane edge splits dense stock with less drag than a bevel would, but it wants a clean push, not a twist; side-loading a .109" blade at high force is how you chip even HSS. Change, don't grind. HSS holds its edge far longer than carbon but is slower to re-hone; the maintenance contract on this blade is wear-and-replace, with at most a light stone touch-up between changes. A heavy re-grind wastes the reason you paid the HSS premium. Clamp is safety. High-force cutting puts the load straight into the set screws — check them tight before a run, and never cut with more blade exposed than the work needs.

Why is it so short?
Three inches puts the edge close to your fist, concentrating force and killing flex — the design brief for short, high-pressure cuts into dense stock. Reach is deliberately traded away.
Is it really HSS if the variant tag says "Standard"?
Yes — the catalog exact-model name and the hydetools product page both carry HSS, and the line doc resolves it as HSS; the "Standard" variant tag is a known data artifact .
What handle do I need?
A 5/8"-capacity handle — the 63055 (9/16"+5/8") or the 63085 (5/8"+3/4") MAXXGRIP. Both accept it, which is one way it differs from the narrower 62930.
63020 or 62930?
Both are HSS .109" stubs; the 62930 is longer (3-7/8") and narrower (9/16", fits only the 63055), the 63020 shorter (3") and a sixteenth wider (5/8", fits either MAXXGRIP). Width and existing handle usually decide.
Can I cut yarn or cloth with it?
You can, but you shouldn't buy it for that — a light limber flat blade does soft-fiber work with far less drag. This blade is for dense, short, high-force cuts.
