The dimensions below describe the blades, not what they can cut. Qualify the exact released stock in the exact approved hand station before production.

Scope boundary: this page covers raw manufacturing stock before tire building or another named converting operation. It is not a tire-service, casing-preparation, repair, retread, roadworthiness, inflation, or return-to-service guide.

Job: divide, trim, or cut identified tire-cord material and identified calendered rubber stock at an approved manual bench so the retained piece meets the current production instruction without losing orientation, batch identity, construction integrity, or contamination status.

Result: the cut follows the authorized line; the retained edge, faces, and any visible reinforcement satisfy the stated acceptance criteria; the piece and parent stock remain identified; no unapproved material or chemistry contacts the stock; blade, assembly, support, and fixture pass the required post-cut check; and the piece is released only to the next named manufacturing operation.

Time: no universal time is supported. The released material state, construction, cut geometry, support, inspection plan, and qualified station determine the cycle. This guide supplies no rate or time target.

Difficulty: advanced production hand cutting. The visible stroke is only one part of the job. Correct stock identity, orientation, process state, workholding, tool selection, first-article approval, and stop decisions determine whether the cut is usable.

Everything else the job requires: the released material and batch/roll records; the current drawing, cut plan, process specification, station SOP, inspection plan, and safety data; the plant-approved blade assembly and retention method; an approved fixture, guide, support, and sacrificial cutting surface; authorized identification and marking materials; calibrated inspection equipment where required; approved contact-cleaning materials and waste controls; protected tool storage; and controls selected by the employer’s hazard assessment. None of these items adds another Hyde product to the backlink union.

Start with the material and process record, not the knife

“Tire cord” and “calendered rubber” are not complete material identities

The job title names manufacturing classes, not one recipe or construction. Before opening or moving stock, bind the work to the current plant record. At minimum, the operator must be able to read back:

material code and revision;

batch, lot, roll, or other traceable identity;

released process state and status;

named construction and any recorded orientation;

the exact cut instruction and acceptance criteria;

which faces, edges, liners, or layers are contact-critical;

the approved manual station and method;

the next named manufacturing operation.

Do not infer composition, reinforcement, ply count, thickness, cure state, tack, age, or conditioning from appearance, touch, odor, color, location, or yesterday’s run. A loose strip, mixed remnant, unlabeled roll, conflicting traveler, or stock whose physical condition does not match the released record goes on material hold.

The material owner controls formulation, state, permitted contact materials, and disposition; the process owner controls cut geometry, orientation, station, and handoff; the equipment owner controls machine interfaces; quality controls acceptance and traceability; EHS controls workplace protection. Do not borrow a practice from another stock or station because it looks similar.

Preserve identity through separation

Prepare the authorized identity carrier before cutting so both the retained piece and parent stock remain traceable. Marking and liners must be process-approved. An unmarked piece is unidentified stock and goes on hold.

Admit the hand-bench method

Proceed only when all of these gates pass:

Identity and construction: stock, release state, expected construction, and next operation are documented.

Method and machine separation: the current instruction permits hand cutting at this bench; the stock is not on uncontrolled equipment or a tensioned web.

Tooling and support: the exact approved blade assembly is acceptable, and both sides can remain controlled with hands outside the path.

Trial and inspection: representative released stock cuts acceptably under the qualification method, and the required result can be verified.

Recovery: responses for trapped tools, damaged edges, missing fragments, contamination, lost identity, and nonconforming cuts are ready.

Failure of one gate stops the manual operation. A different blade in this four-model union does not cure an unidentified construction, an unauthorized method, or an uncontrolled machine boundary.

Known construction is not permission to cut every layer

The traveler must state whether the cut crosses only a rubber layer, crosses rubber and reinforcement together, or follows another defined sequence. It must also state the required orientation and what condition is acceptable at the retained edge.

Do not hunt for a layer with the point or use the knife as a probe. Unexpected wire, metal, hard mesh, hard inclusion, mixed construction, foreign material, or reinforcement behavior ends the cut and returns the work to the process owner. This guide does not authorize cutting steel cord, any named textile, or any specific reinforcement merely because “tire cord” appears in the job title.

Select within the exact four-blade union

Selection begins with the controlled pattern already assigned to the station.

62330 versus 62450: both are catalog-named flat-grind HSS blades in the .072" full-length class. The supported differences are listed length, width, and pattern. Use the pattern and assembly that the qualified station record names. Do not convert greater width or length into an unstated capacity or performance claim.

62930 versus 63020: both are catalog-named flat-grind HSS blades in the .109" short, heavy class. The 62930 is listed longer and narrower; the 63020 is listed shorter and wider. Those facts can route a controlled station comparison, but they do not prove a cut radius, force rating, minimum kerf, capacity, or exact handle fit for this job.

Confirm that distinction on representative stock under the process qualification. Do not use the stubs as proof that more force is acceptable, and do not use a longer blade where extra exposed edge is not authorized.

All four products are bare blades. This exact application row registers no handle. The blade must arrive at the bench in a plant-approved assembly whose seating, retention, exposure, inspection, and change method are documented for the exact station. A width resemblance or a statement in a neighboring guide is not permission to improvise fit. Do not shim, tape, wedge, drill, grind, or otherwise alter a blade or holder to make a combination work.

HSS is the official catalog designation for each of the four registered models. Do not expand that designation into an exact alloy grade, heat treatment, hardness, or guaranteed edge life.

Prepare the controlled station

Clear and verify the contact zone

Perform the station’s documented line clearance. Remove previous stock, labels, liners, offcuts, residue, sharpening debris, and unrelated tools. Verify that the support, guide, fixture, receiving surface, approved tool assembly, and inspection equipment are in the required condition.

Do not add oil, water, solvent, soap, silicone, powder, release agent, adhesive, heat, or another substance to reduce drag unless the exact process explicitly authorizes it. A cut that becomes easier by contaminating a later bond or cure surface is a failed cut.

Inspect the blade and assembly without touching the edge. Apply the site’s acceptance criteria for chips, cracks, bends, corrosion, edge damage, residue, movement, handle or holder damage, and traceable identity.

Support the whole cut

Support retained stock and waste close to the line with the approved fixture, guide, restraint, and sacrificial surface. Keep clamps and hands outside the cut and follow-through path. Never brace stock against the body, cut over a gap, catch an offcut, or direct the edge toward a person or equipment.

Qualify and approve the first cut

Read the traveler at the work

Match stock identity, status, construction, orientation, keep side, waste side, line, required result, exact blade pattern, assembly, station, and inspection plan. Stage the receiving identity carrier. If the drawing or traveler is not present or does not match the stock, stop.

Lay out without changing the stock

Use the authorized datum, pattern, stop, or mark. Do not stretch, compress, fold, stack, warm, cool, or otherwise condition the stock to make layout easier unless the process requires that state. This guide supplies no dimension, tolerance, trim allowance, or relaxation time.

Where orientation is controlled, transfer it to the cut piece by the approved method before separation can make it ambiguous.

Run the qualification piece

Use representative released stock in the same documented state as production. Set the approved support, guide, fixture, blade assembly, and work position. Keep the off hand outside the entire projected cut, deflection, and breakthrough path.

Begin from the authorized entry. Establish the line with a controlled slicing or drawing motion under the station SOP. Where the qualified method uses progressive passes, re-enter the same track rather than cutting a second line beside it. Keep the blade aligned; do not twist, pry, chop, strike the spine, lever the cut open, or add body weight.

Watch the material, not a production-rate target. Stop if the stock stretches, smears, bunches, separates between layers, exposes unexpected construction, closes on the blade, changes resistance abruptly, contaminates the edge beyond the approved cleaning response, or requires force outside the validated method.

As separation nears completion, use the station’s controlled finish so released waste cannot stretch the keep piece, pull the blade sideways, fall into the operator, or carry the edge beyond the supported endpoint. Do not tear a partly connected edge apart.

Inspect the first article

Set the blade in its protected station position before handling the piece. Inspect by the current quality plan, which may include:

line and dimensional result;

required face and orientation;

edge condition through the complete construction;

no unintended stretch, smear, tear, fray, pullout, separation, exposed material, or foreign matter;

no transfer from blade, support, guide, liner, marker, glove, previous material, or cleaner;

batch/roll identity and released status preserved;

blade, assembly, fixture, guide, and support still acceptable.

Do not invent an acceptance limit from the blade dimensions. Record the exact model and pattern, station configuration identifier, material identity, and approval result required by the process.

Run, inspect, and hand off

At each new run, roll, batch, construction, process state, blade change, assembly change, fixture change, or other station-defined change point, apply the quality plan’s requalification rule. This guide does not invent the interval.

For every piece, match the traveler; place, secure, and support the stock at the approved datum; confirm the endpoint and waste path; make the qualified cut; protect the tool before handling the part; inspect; then identify accepted work and segregate nonconforming work.

Track process signals. Rising drag, pass count, smearing, fray, wander, heat, pickup, vibration, blade movement, or operator effort is evidence to stop and diagnose—not permission to push harder or silently shorten the inspection interval.

After acceptance, apply the authorized liner, cover, label, tray, or protection. Transfer the piece only to the next named manufacturing step. Re-cover and re-identify the parent stock. Segregate trim, rework, and waste under the material-control plan; same-parent origin does not by itself authorize return to a batch.

Inspection, cleanup, and closeout

The quality plan owns acceptance. Record all required identifiers, measurements, observations, nonconformances, tool changes, and hold decisions. Do not edit a rejected edge until the disposition authorizes rework and names the method; the original condition is evidence.

Clean the work zone and tool only by the current material and station instructions. Keep debris and cleaning residue out of product. Handle the blade through the approved holder or maintenance fixture, not by wiping along the edge. This page supplies no cleaner, abrasive, sharpening angle, change interval, or maintenance process.

Inspect the blade assembly, support, fixture, guide, and surrounding stock after the run. A chip, crack, loose assembly, damaged support, unidentified residue, missing fragment, or lost label keeps the affected material on hold. Store the tool edge-protected under the plant program. Dispose of spent blades and sharp fragments through the site’s controlled sharps or metal-fragment route.

The handoff record should identify: material and batch/roll; work order or traveler revision; exact Hyde model/pattern used; station or fixture identifier; inspection status; deviations or stops; accepted quantity and segregated quantity; parent-stock status; and the next authorized manufacturing operation.

Safety and machine boundary

This is not a substitute for the employer’s safety program. For a manual bench operation, the employer’s written hazard assessment selects protection for the actual knife, chemical, material-handling, fragment, and workplace hazards; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 requires that assessment and PPE selection. This guide does not name a glove, rating, respirator, eye-protection configuration, or clothing system.

Mills and calenders in rubber and plastics manufacturing have equipment-specific safeguards under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.216. Servicing or maintenance that exposes a worker to unexpected start-up or stored energy belongs under the employer’s machine-specific energy-control program; OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 establishes the federal control-of-hazardous-energy requirements. Those standards are anchors, not a site procedure.

This guide never authorizes cutting moving, energized, tensioned, suspended, hot, pressurized, or inadequately controlled stock. A stop button, idle machine, or motionless roll is not proof of a safe intervention. The host manual and employer procedure control access, guarding, isolation, stored energy, setup, blade changes, and restart. Work requiring entry into machinery or a bypassed guard leaves this bench workflow.

Raw stock is not a tire repair

The word “tire” does not make this casing work. No tire is being inspected for service damage, classified for repair, pared, reamed, patched, mounted, inflated, or released.

None of that chain can be inferred from this raw-stock guide. Conversely, a production traveler for raw tire cord does not authorize any operation on a used or finished tire.

If the object is a mounted tire, service casing, damaged tire, cured finished tire component presented for repair, or anything whose next step is inspection for return to service, stop. This is the wrong guide and the wrong tool graph.

Which of the four blades should a new station use?

Use the controlled pattern named by the process owner. If none exists, engineering must qualify one on the exact material and assembly. The supported split is full-length 62330/62450 versus short, heavy 62930/63020.

Are all four blades HSS?

Their exact-model catalog names say HSS. The 62930 and 63020 variant tags say “Standard”; this guide follows the catalog names and keeps that conflict flagged.

What handle fits each blade?

How thick or how many plies can these blades cut?

Blade dimensions are not stock capacity; the traveler and qualified station control admission.

What temperature or cutting speed should I use?

None is supplied.

Can I use lubricant, solvent, powder, heat, or adhesive to make the cut easier?

Only when the exact process authorizes it for that stock and downstream operation. This guide prescribes none.

Can the blade cut steel cord or hidden wire?

Unexpected wire, metal, hard mesh, hard inclusion, or other unrecorded construction is a stop-and-hold condition.

How often should the blade be changed or sharpened?

Use the station’s condition-based maintenance program. Hyde supplies no model-specific interval, edge life, or sharpening method here.

Does a clean raw-stock cut mean a tire made from it is approved?

Short history note

Hyde’s mill-blade system preserves factory-floor purchasing logic: the blade is a pattern-numbered consumable and the station preserves that identity.
