DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • A reason to relax pull-line discipline. The guard stops the cutting hand; it does not protect a bystander, the off hand, or anyone in the blade's path if it breaks free.
  • Scraping, prying, or striking — a ground edge in a wooden handle, guard or no guard.
  • Delicate bench detail. The guard and the eight-inch blade are built for force and reach; close trimming, shaping, and skiving belong to the smaller square points and the skivers.
  • Flooring over a subfloor that must survive — that is the 67090 hook knife's captured-throat job; a straight edge scores what's beneath.
  • Generic disposable-blade cutting — cardboard, wrap, abrasive board dull a maintained edge fast; feed a utility blade for that.

How the pros run it

01

The guard changes grip, not stroke

Set the web of the hand against the guard and you have a positive, repeatable hand position for forceful pulls — a real advantage on a long shift, because it removes the constant micro-correction of holding station on a bare handle. Keep the material stable and the off hand behind the line. A guard protects the cutting hand; it does nothing for the hand steadying the work, which stays clear of the blade's path. Progressive strokes in rubber and hide — deepen the cut over several passes rather than forcing one. Low blade angle so the edge shears instead of ploughing. Maintain, don't feed: hardened high-carbon steel honed keen on a stone and wiped dry after wet rubber or damp fiber. The guard is a safety device, not a substitute for the pull-line discipline and edge care every knife in this wing demands.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Is the blade any different from the 60780?
No. Identical 8" × 1" × .083" square-point blade and identical cut. The 60810 adds a built-in finger guard; that is the entire difference.
Why buy the guard?
Because an eight-inch heavy square point is used with maximum hand force and often slick hands — belt splicing especially — and the guard is a hard stop that keeps a slipping hand off the edge. Many crews require it by policy.
Does the guard get in the way?
It sets a positive, repeatable hand position that actually helps on long forceful pulls; it is not built for delicate bench detail, which belongs to smaller knives anyway.
60810 or 60870?
Guard versus long handle — different upgrades. Slipping-hand risk → the guarded 60810; reach and two-hand leverage on deep slabbing → the long-handled 60870.
Will it rust?
High-carbon cutlery steel: hone it, and wipe it dry after wet rubber or damp fiber. Maintain it, don't feed it.
Handle material — wood or soft-grip?
The store lists a wood safety handle; some catalog wording describes a soft-grip guard — reconcile before spec-grade copy. Either way the guard's function is the same.
