Two hands, or one hand well back

The seven-inch handle is meant to be gripped with both hands for a long slabbing draw, or gripped near the butt for maximum leverage; a mid-handle one-hand grip wastes what the tool is for. Body behind the draw, off hand out of the line. Long two-hand pulls generate real force — plant the work, and keep any steadying hand clear of and behind the blade's path, because a knife this long lunges far if it breaks free. Progressive strokes in rubber and hide; low angle so the long edge shears. Maintain the edge: hardened high-carbon steel honed square and keen, wiped dry after wet work. The compression-riveted handle is the most durable joint in the line, but the blade is still a knife you sharpen, not a blade you replace.

What makes the BG50 "special"?
The long handle. It is the standard 8" × 1" × .083" square-point blade on a smooth seven-inch hardwood handle — nearly fifteen inches of knife — built for two-handed reach and leverage, and fastened with the line's heaviest compression cutlery rivets.
What is it for?
Deep, forceful, repetitive draw cuts where two hands help most: slabbing damaged layers off large paper rolls, cutting deep foam buns, long pulls through wide belting and heavy hide.
60870 or 60780?
Long handle or standard. If you slab rolls or make deep two-hand cuts all shift, the BG50; if you work one-handed at a bench, the 60780.
60870 or 60810?
Reach or guard. The BG50 gives leverage; the 60810 gives a finger guard. The BG50 has no guard — if policy requires one, choose the 60810.
Is "14 gauge" a different steel from the flagship?
No — 14-gauge high-carbon steel is the same .083" the catalog lists for the blade; it is the thickness stated as a sheet gauge.
Will it rust?
High-carbon cutlery steel: hone it, wipe it dry after wet work. A maintained knife, not a fed one.
