  • The most delicate close-in bench trimming where you'd choke fully onto the blade — the guard blocks that grip; use the bare 60450.
  • Light cloth and webbing — the .083" gauge is stiffer than those want; the guarded 60120 (.065") is the lighter safety knife, or the flat 60090 bare.
  • Deep dense foam — the hollow 60480.
  • Wide belt and long slabbing — the 8" 60780/60810.
  • And it is not a pry bar or scraper; the hardened edge chips and the guard is not a striking surface.

How the pros run it

The guard is a backstop, not a license

It stops the hand that slips; it does not make the edge safe to cut toward yourself. Keep the free hand and body behind and to the side of the blade's travel exactly as you would with a bare knife — the guard is there for the failure, not the plan.

Progressive strokes, spine holding the line

As with all .083" square-point work: re-draw the same line, deepen in passes, and let the stiff blade hold the scribe instead of forcing one deflecting pass.

Register the guard in your grip

The finger stop gives you a fixed reference for hand position — settle your grip against it so your fingers seat the same way every cut, which is its own small safety and consistency gain over a bare handle.

Maintain the edge

The guard changes nothing about the steel: hone the high-carbon blade on a stone, strop it, and wipe it dry after wet rubber or damp gasket work, or it will bloom rust.

What's different from the 60450?
Only the safety handle's finger guard. Same 4" × 1" × .083" blade, same cut.
Do I really need the guard for belt splicing?
For high-force cover cutting and under a shop safety policy, yes — the guard is there for the breakthrough moment. Bare 60450 only where a hand can't slip.
Does the guard hurt control?
It blocks choking fully onto the blade for the most delicate trims; on belt and rubber work that trade is worth it.
60510 or 60120?
This .083" for belting and dense rubber; the .065" 60120 for textiles and lighter cutting.
Wood or soft-grip handle?
Listings say "Safety Wood Handle"; the catalog family blurb says "soft-grip handle with built-in finger guard" — the finger guard is the certain fact; the handle-material wording is being reconciled.

Hyde Tools 60510 Square Point Knife, Safety Wood Handle

Very well made knife, the safety guard is perfect. It would be better if the knife could be sharpened. I use them to cut broomcorn when I make Appalachian style brooms.
