DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Scraping, prying, striking, opening cans — it is a ground cutting edge in a wooden handle, not a putty knife or a pry bar.
  • Brittle acrylic and precision molded flash — score-and-snap and V-trim tools, respectively.
  • Flooring over a subfloor that must survive — a straight edge pressed through sheet goods scores what is underneath; the captured-throat 67090 hook knife cuts the sheet and not the floor.
  • Generic, blade-dulling jobsite cutting — cardboard, wrap, abrasive board. When the cut is generic, feed a disposable blade (utility wing); the square point is for the trade cut worth a maintained edge.
  • A carton knife under a safety program — that spec is written for self-retracting knives and round-tip blades, not an eight-inch fixed edge.

How the pros run it

01

Stance and grip

This is standing, whole-arm work: the material flat and stable on a bench over a sacrificial surface, the handle in a full fist, the off hand clear of the blade's line and behind it. Choke up on the smooth handle for control on a scribe line; drop back for power on a long draw. Angle low. The blade slices when it is laid low to the work and chisels when it stands up — keep it low so it shears rather than ploughs. Progressive, not forced. Especially in rubber and heavy hide, deepen the cut over repeated strokes down one line; a single forced pass is how a blade wanders or binds. Edge care is the whole ownership model. This is hardened high-carbon cutlery steel, ground and tempered — a knife you maintain, honed square and keen on a stone and re-honed when it dulls, wiped dry after wet rubber or damp fiber so it doesn't bloom rust. A cutter who will not keep a stone is buying the wrong wing of this line; the utility knives one section over are the feed-a-blade answer.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Why does a hand knife need an eight-inch blade?
Reach into the material — slabbing the damaged layers off a paper roll, drawing through a deep foam bun, opening a wide belt cover in one pass. A shorter blade bottoms out in the work.
What's the difference between this and the 60810?
The finger guard. Same 8" × 1" × .083" blade; the 60810 adds a molded guard for high-force, wet-hand, or policy-governed cutting. No cutting-performance difference.
And the 60870?
A seven-inch smooth handle on the same blade — a two-fisted, long-reach version for roll-slabbing, fastened with compression cutlery rivets. Everyone who doesn't need the two-hand leverage buys the 60780.
Is it good for foam?
Yes, and its length helps on deep buns — but the hollow-ground 6" knives (60720/60750) beat it on dense foam. Buy the 60780 when you also need its reach and rubber duty.
Will it rust?
It is high-carbon cutlery steel: keener and easier to re-hone than stainless, and it wants a dry wipe after wet rubber or damp fiber. That maintain-not-feed contract is the whole heritage wing.
Can I cut sheet flooring with it?
Not over a subfloor that must survive — a straight edge scores what's beneath. That is the 67090 hook knife's captured-throat job.

Great company and even better knives

My parents and even grandparents have been using these knives in the kitchen for as long as I can remember. Glad they are still around and of the same quality at 50 years ago!

knife for opening painted shut windows

We needed a sturdier tool that could be used for painted shut windows, tapping on the blade with a leather mallet. This worked perfectly.

ls 60780 Square Point Knife, Wood Handle

Good knives, great for cutting roxul/rockwool type insulation.
