What it does
Hook knife BG39A with a V-ground hook blade, 3-3/8" x 5/16" x .083". Short and stiff. The hook severs the sheet and keeps the point off the floor. No piercing point, so every cut starts over an edge.
How to use it
- Start each cut over an edge and draw toward yourself so the material feeds into the throat.
- Keep your body and off hand out of the pull line.
- Carry it in the 42700 hook-knife sheath.

Common questions
Can I start a cut in the middle of a floor?
No. A hook knife has no piercing point. For mid-field starts use an open-point knife such as the 20200 for flooring or 54020 and 54040 for carpet.
Is this a banana knife?
No. Real banana knives are long and flexible. This is the short, stiff linoleum hook.
How do I sharpen it?
Work a slip stone or round-edged stone along the inside of the hook, keeping the factory bevel. A flat bench stone cannot reach it.
Is it safe to cut old flooring?
Test first. Resilient flooring and black cutback adhesive from before the 1980s may contain asbestos.
