Is this the right tool for your job?

CHOOSE A DIFFERENT TOOL WHEN
  • Epoxies — the family row bars it flatly ("Not for use with epoxies"), and the bar is chemical, not commercial: a curing resin on a polypropylene rotor never comes off.
  • Joint compound, texture, grout, mortar — stiff materials are the welded-steel tier's rating (46555/46560/46565); this head is shaped for liquids and would carve rather than roll them.
  • A sealed pail: the 3-1/8" head never passes a five-gallon pour spout — mixing a closed five through its spout is exactly two other tools' job (46540 in steel, 43440 in nylon), and neither sentence in this paragraph is true of them.
  • And gallon cans: it fits a gallon the way a canoe paddle fits a saucepan — its little siblings (43420, 43460) exist so it never has to.

THE JOB, THE REASON, AND THE BETTER TOOL

How the pros run it

01

The rim rule

chuck above the rim at all times — the shaft length is the feature; don't defeat it by burying the tool to reach faster. Trigger: slowest controllable speed; a five gives a vortex more room, so the penalty for speed is bigger here than anywhere in the paint tier. Motion: perimeter orbit plus vertical laps; a pail has corners in the vertical sense — the wall-floor ring — and they only get mixed if the head visits. Entry/exit: trigger only with the head on the floor; full stop before the head clears the surface. Whip control: 17-1/2" of shaft amplifies any bend into wobble — keep the shaft near vertical and let speed stay low; a leaned, fast, long shaft is how buckets get repainted on the outside. After: rinse wet, dry the plated shaft, hang.

Asked before buying

BUYER QUESTIONS, ANSWERED BEFORE YOU ORDER
Will it reach the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket with my drill above the rim?
Yes — that is the design brief the 17-1/2" shaft answers. Impellers on the floor, chuck in the clear.
What drill do I need?
Any drill with a 3/8" chuck seats the 5/16" hex shank. Variable speed matters more than power; liquid paint doesn't load a modern drill.
Can it mix joint compound or texture?
No. It is a liquids tool from the paint tier; compound and texture belong to the welded-steel Mudslingers. Forcing it just carves a channel and strains the element.
Epoxy floor coating?
Never — "Not for use with epoxies" is on its own catalog family row. The epoxy-rated members are the steel tier (46540 through 46565) and the heavy tier.
Can I mix through the pour spout without opening the pail?
Not with this tool — its 3-1/8" head doesn't pass a spout. That job belongs to the 46540 (steel) and the StirWhip 43440 (nylon fingers).
How long does a settled five take?
Minutes, not seconds — floor pass, perimeter orbit, vertical laps, until the drill load steadies and the surface folds one color. A five that stood for years may be past any poly head; that grade is steel-tier work.
Why is my finished wall showing tiny craters?
Likely air whipped in at mixing — too fast, or a spinning head near the surface. Slow, submerged, orbiting is the whole technique; let a whipped pail rest before use.
