DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Epoxies — not a judgment call; the catalog row bars the whole paint tier ("Not for use with epoxies"), and a two-part resin kicking on a polypropylene rotor is permanent.
  • Joint compound, texture, grout, mortar: the impellers and the shank are sized for liquids; stiff material wants the welded-steel Mudslingers (46555/46560 class) and their torque.
  • A five-gallon pail: the 11" shaft cannot work a pail floor with the drill above the rim — that is the 43430's one-line job description.
  • And routine stir-maintenance of a fresh can: a paddle does that for free; this tool earns its chuck time when the settle is past what sticks fix.

How the pros run it

01

Trigger

the low end of the range, feathered; speed never fixes anything in a paint can and causes most of what goes wrong. Entry and exit: head on the can floor before the trigger; trigger fully released before the head leaves the liquid. Motion: the head works the floor first — perimeter, then center — then slow vertical laps; a stationary mixer leaves dead corners even in a gallon. Depth discipline: keep the impellers well under the surface; the top inch is where air gets in. Shank seating: bottom the hex in the chuck and snug all three jaws; a quarter-inch shank spinning in a loose chuck rounds its corners. After: rinse wet, wipe the plated shaft dry, hang it up.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
Will it fit my drill?
Yes — the 1/4" hex shank fits any three-jaw chuck and 1/4" quick-change collets. It is the least demanding tool in the line to drive; a 12V cordless is plenty.
Can I mix a 5-gallon bucket with it?
No. The 11" shaft cannot reach a pail floor with the drill above the rim. The 43430 (17-1/2") is the pail member of this tier.
Can I mix epoxy or two-part coatings?
No — the catalog family row says "Not for use with epoxies," and it is a hard bar, not advice. Epoxy-rated mixing lives in the welded-steel Mudslinger tier.
Joint compound? Thinset? Grout?
No. This is a liquids tool — paint and stain. Stiff materials want the steel tier's heads and torque.
How fast should the drill run?
Low. Feather the trigger at the bottom of the range, keep the head submerged and moving. Speed whips in air that ends up as pinholes in the dried film.
Quarts too, or just gallons?
Both are in its name. The working rule: routine quart stirring is stick-and-spatula work; the 43420 comes out when a quart has stood long enough to pack a pigment layer a hand tool rides over.
How do I know the can is actually mixed?
Steady drill load, a floor that sweeps clean with no slick patches, and material folding at the surface in one uniform color with no amber streaks. Surface swirl alone proves nothing.

Reliable and at a great price

I use a ton of these in my concrete coating business. They always perform well, and they can even mix a 5-gallon bucket if you insert it correctly in your drill. And Hyde's price is the best anywhere for this type.
