How to Remix a Settled Gallon or Quart of Paint
Job: return one positively identified, still-serviceable quart or gallon of paint from permitted storage settlement to the uniform condition required by its manufacturer.

“Settled paint” is not one material specification. This page supplies no substitute recipe.
Time: the exact paint label or current TDS sets the mixing duration, any rest or induction period, and any usable-life limit. If those documents give no time or endpoint, obtain the paint manufacturer’s direction before power mixing. This guide starts no universal clock.
Difficulty: diagnosis before technique. Operating a small mixer is straightforward; deciding that the material is still paint rather than spoiled, skinned, contaminated, frozen-damaged, or unidentified waste is the consequential part.
Both are manufacturer-described for mixing in quart and gallon cans. Neither is automatically approved for the exact paint, can, drill, speed, temperature, or method in front of you. Hyde’s catalog bars the 434xx paint-mixer family from epoxies; this guide does not extend either tool into two-part or reactive coatings.
Everything else: the original labeled paint container; the current label, TDS, and SDS for that exact manufacturer, product line, base, sheen, and colorant system; the mixer’s instructions; a drill that satisfies the exact Hyde requirement and its own manual; a clean hand paddle for an off-power bottom check if the paint maker allows one; a stable protected mixing station; a timer if the TDS gives a timed sequence; the exact ventilation, eye, skin, respiratory, and hygiene controls required by the SDS and workplace plan; a permitted cleanup system; and an approved waste route.
First decide whether the can is eligible for remixing
Settlement can be ordinary and reversible: heavier pigment and solids move downward while liquid remains above. Spoilage, a cured skin, contamination, and storage damage are different failures. A mixer redistributes what is already in the can; it cannot restore decomposed binder, remove contamination, reverse cure, recreate evaporated components, or prove that an unknown material is safe.
Build a one-can admission card before opening:
Identity: manufacturer, exact product name, base, sheen, color name/code, tint formula if present, lot or batch code, purchase or tint date if known, and intended surface.
Document match: label revision and current TDS/SDS revision. Confirm that the documents match the exact product—not merely the brand or a similarly named coating.
Storage history: known storage temperature and duration, whether the can froze or overheated, whether it was previously opened, and whether anything was added.
Remix permission: the manufacturer’s statement that stored separation or settlement may be mixed back, plus any shelf-life or opened-container limit.
Method: permitted hand or mechanical method; mixer style or material restrictions; sequence; speed or maximum speed; duration; rest/induction; and finish criteria.
Conditions: permitted paint, air, and surface temperature; ventilation; ignition controls; humidity or other environmental limits if stated.
Protection and response: SDS Sections 2, 4, 6, 7, and 8 for hazards, first aid, spill response, handling/storage, engineering controls, and PPE.
Cleanup and waste: named cleaner, tool-cleaning method, residue and wash-liquid handling, and prohibited disposal routes.
Every executable number comes from that card. Do not borrow rpm, minutes, temperature, thinner quantity, or PPE from another color, sheen, product family, brand, online video, or this guide. If the current label/TDS permits mechanical mixing but omits a required speed, time, temperature, or mixer geometry, contact the paint manufacturer. Silence is not permission to improvise.
The hard refusal list
This workflow admits settlement only. It refuses recovery when any of the following is present:
Skin: a cured or leathery film, whether whole or torn. Do not cut it out, strain the paint, or stir fragments back in as a recovery method under this guide. Skin proves the container lost volatile material or reacted at the surface; removing the evidence does not restore the formula.
Spoilage: sour, rotten, putrid, or otherwise abnormal odor; biological growth; gelled, ropey, curdled, rubbery, or irreversibly lumpy body; unexpected gas or pressure; or any other reject condition named by the manufacturer.
Contamination: dirt, rust, dried rim chips, brush or roller debris, mixed colors or sheens, unapproved water/solvent/additive, unknown liquid, cross-product residue, or a tool that cannot be proved clean.
Container failure: unreadable or missing identity, severe corrosion, leakage, breached seam, badly distorted closure, or transfer into an unlabeled food or beverage container.
Storage excursion outside the exact product’s allowance: known or suspected freeze/thaw or excessive heat when the manufacturer does not explicitly admit the material after that event.
Incompatible or reactive coating: epoxy or any two-part system; a coating whose label/TDS prohibits these mixers, power mixing, polypropylene contact, plated-steel contact, or ordinary electric-drill use.
Close or isolate the can, label it DO NOT USE — REJECTED AT REMIX ADMISSION, and follow the exact product and local waste directions. Do not blend rejected paint into good paint, donate it as usable paint, hide it in a boxed batch, or run it through a strainer. EPA’s household-hazardous-waste guidance warns against mixing leftover hazardous products and directs users to the label and local program; commercial generators must also follow their applicable waste rules.
Admit the mixer without inventing fit or performance
Tool capability and coating permission are separate gates. The paint maker decides whether and how its material may be power mixed. Hyde establishes only what each attachment is.
43420 — documented facts: Hyde names it the 1-Qt./Gal. Paint Mixer and describes mixing paint, adhesives, coatings, stains, and wall texture in quart or gallon containers with an electric drill. Hyde specifies polypropylene impellers, a plated-steel drive shaft, an 11" × 1/4" hex shaft, and 2-5/8" impellers. The applicable catalog family row says, “Not for use with epoxies.”
43460 — documented facts: Hyde names it the Multi-Blade Paint Mixer and describes fast, thorough mixing in quart and gallon cans, including lifting and mixing solids from the bottom. Hyde specifies rugged polypropylene, a 7" hexagonal shaft, and use with a 3/8" drill. The accepted source does not state the shaft’s across-flats dimension, head diameter, blade count, numeric speed, or comparative capacity.
Those facts do not prove that either head fits every can opening, clears every can wall and floor, reaches the required zone, is chemically compatible with every paint, works at a particular rpm, finishes in a particular time, or outperforms the other. “Quart and gallon” is a manufacturer-stated container class, not permission to skip a physical and documentary check.
With the drill de-energized, reconcile:
the exact coating’s allowed mixer material and geometry;
the Hyde attachment’s documented shank and drill requirement;
the drill manual’s chuck, speed-control, duty, and atmosphere restrictions;
the actual can opening, depth, headroom, and soundness; and
the label/TDS mixing method.
Dry-fit only while clean and off. The head must enter and move through the required path without forcing, scraping, or making the chuck cross the rim. Do not trim the mixer, bend blades, improvise an adapter, enlarge the can opening, or use the can itself as a bearing. If the required clearance or compatibility cannot be proved, the answer is unknown and the tool stays out.
Controlled workflow
Stage the station and the stop response
Work at floor or stable bench height on a protected, level surface. Restrain the can against rotation without crushing it. Remove trip hazards and keep ignition sources out of any area where the exact SDS identifies a flammable atmosphere.
Before opening, stage the permitted spill materials, waste container, lid-rest, cleaning system, and first-aid information. Do not plan to carry a dripping attachment across the room after the mix. Keep the drill unplugged or its battery removed while the attachment is installed, inspected, positioned, cleaned, or touched.
Open without adding debris
Clean loose dirt from the lid and rim before breaking the seal. Open by the container maker’s permitted method without deforming the closure. Set the lid clean side protected.
Inspect without stirring. Compare appearance and odor only to the exact manufacturer’s acceptance criteria. Do not lean over the opening to smell deliberately. If skin, foreign matter, abnormal odor, microbial growth, corrosion debris, gel, curds, or any hard-refusal condition appears, stop before a paddle or mixer disperses the evidence.
Confirm conditions at the paint, not across the room
Measure or verify every temperature the exact label/TDS makes consequential: paint, ambient air, surface, or storage history. Record the values. Do not warm a can, chill it, thin it, or move it into a nominally “room temperature” space and assume that resets an out-of-range storage event.
Install the exact PPE and ventilation from the current SDS and workplace plan. OSHA’s mandatory SDS format places safe handling/storage in Section 7 and engineering controls and individual protection in Section 8; that is why a generic “wear gloves and goggles” sentence is not an adequate substitute. Glove material, eye/face protection, ventilation, respiratory protection, and hygiene can vary by formulation and task.
Perform the off-power settlement check only if allowed
If the paint instructions allow an off-power hand check, use a clean compatible paddle to examine the top, middle, bottom, and wall-floor ring without introducing another material. Record what is observed: free liquid, soft sediment, compacted but penetrable settlement, or a layer that will not yield.
This check does not authorize remixing by itself. Match the condition to the manufacturer’s remixability language. If the TDS admits ordinary settlement but the observed layer lies outside its description—or no condition guidance exists—send the observations and lot information to the manufacturer. Do not escalate from hand force to drill force merely because the bottom feels hard.
Set the exact method, speed, and clock
Read the sequence from the admission card.
which attachment geometry and material are permitted;
whether the head begins at the bottom, another depth, or in a stated zone;
the exact speed or speed ceiling;
the exact mix duration and what event starts it;
required head movement, scrape-down, pause, rest, or remix;
the stated finish endpoint; and
any limit on total mixing or usable time.
If a required field is blank, stop. “Slow,” “low gear,” “feather the trigger,” “about a song,” and “until it looks right” are not specifications. Hyde provides no universal rpm or time for this job, and neither the 43420’s dimensions nor the 43460’s product wording supplies one.
Mix only inside the admitted envelope
Secure the correct attachment in the documented drill, using the drill maker’s chucking procedure. Fit any required auxiliary handle. Place the clean attachment and drill exactly as the paint method directs before energizing. Keep both hands and loose material away from the rotating system.
Start the timer at the exact documented event and run only at the prescribed setting. Follow the stated depth and movement pattern. Unless the exact coating directions say otherwise, containment practice is to keep the rotating head below the free surface and stop rotation before withdrawal; this avoids the obvious ejection path.
Stop immediately if the can rotates or buckles, the head contacts the container, the chuck approaches the paint or rim, the drill lugs, overheats, sparks abnormally, or tries to twist out of the operator’s grip, the shaft wobbles, paint climbs the shaft, a vortex or foam forms outside the documented behavior, or material leaves the can. De-energize before diagnosing. Do not correct with more speed, more time, a larger head, an adapter, added water/solvent, or a performance story about the other Hyde model.
Verify the manufacturer’s endpoint
At the prescribed stop, de-energize and allow all rotation to cease. Perform only the finish checks named by the exact label/TDS: uniform color, uniform body, absence of stated separation, a permitted bottom scrape, viscosity test, drawdown, filtration, induction, or other product-specific endpoint.
Surface swirl is not proof. Neither is a smooth top over a compact floor. If the documented endpoint is not met within the permitted method and time, stop and quarantine the can. Do not keep mixing past the limit or decide that a harder-running drill proves useful progress. Contact the manufacturer with product identity, lot, storage history, conditions, observed separation, tool, speed, time, and result.
Where the manufacturer requires a test patch or dry evaluation, make it on the specified substrate under the stated conditions and wait the full evaluation time. Do not apply questionable paint to the project while waiting for an answer.
Decant or close without contaminating the source
If the paint passes, proceed only into the application or working-container method its documents permit. Keep brushes, rollers, dirty pour aids, and used tray paint out of the source can. Preserve the original label and lot information.
If the project pauses, clean the channel and close the can by the container instructions. Mark the remix date, operator, document revisions, observed condition, mixer model, prescribed speed/time, and acceptance result. A later operator should inherit evidence, not a can labeled merely “good.”
Cleanup and waste
De-energize the drill before the mixer leaves the controlled rest position. Follow the exact paint label/SDS for cleaner, sequence, PPE, ventilation, spill control, and waste handling. “Waterborne” does not by itself authorize sink disposal; “solvent-borne” does not identify a universally safe solvent; “easy to clean” on the 43460 page is not a disposal instruction.
Do not spin a mixer in open solvent or rinse water unless the coating and tool instructions explicitly permit that method and the station controls splashing, vapor, ignition, and waste. Do not wash paint or solvent into a storm drain, onto soil, or into an unapproved sanitary drain. Capture residue and contaminated cleaning liquid as required. EPA directs household users to the product label and local environmental, health, or solid-waste agency; workplace waste follows the generator’s applicable program.
Inspect the cleaned attachment while de-energized. Remove it from service if the shaft is bent, the head damaged, contamination remains, or cleaning altered the documented geometry. Dry and store it as Hyde and the drill/tool instructions direct. Never use the next can as the cleaning bath for the last one.
What goes wrong—and the controlled response
A skin appears when the lid comes off. Reject the can under this guide. Do not remove, strain, or remix the skin as recovery; label and route the material by the manufacturer/local waste instructions.
The paint smells abnormal or contains growth, curds, rust, chips, or unknown debris. Stop before dispersion. This is spoilage or contamination, not settlement.
The can froze, overheated, or has unknown storage history. The exact product maker decides whether evaluation is possible. Do not use easy stirring as proof that the formula survived.
The bottom layer will not yield within the documented method. Stop at the stated limit. More speed, more time, and a different unapproved head do not turn an out-of-spec can into approved paint.
The surface foams, vortices, or throws paint. Release the trigger and de-energize. Compare actual speed, fill level, head position, can fit, and method with the exact instructions. Do not apply until the manufacturer’s endpoint and any required rest are satisfied.
The drill lugs, heats, or twists. Stop. Check documented mixer/drill fit, paint condition, and permitted method. Never brace harder and power through; abnormal load can signal incompatible viscosity, geometry, or a non-remixable bottom.
Uniformity is reached, but the test patch dries wrong. Quarantine the paint. Color, sheen, cure, adhesion, odor, or film defects after a correct mix are material verdicts, not invitations to remix again.
The wrong thinner, water, color, or tool residue entered the can. Contaminated. Record exactly what entered and how much if known, isolate the material, and ask the manufacturer/waste program for the next action. Do not average it into another can.
Paint contacts a person or spills. Follow the exact SDS first-aid or accidental-release section. This guide does not replace emergency directions.
Can every separated paint be mixed back? No. Only the exact manufacturer can define reversible settlement for that product. Skin, spoilage, contamination, storage damage, unknown identity, and reactive systems are refused here.
How long should I mix? The time and endpoint on the exact label/current TDS. If absent, obtain manufacturer direction before power mixing.
What rpm should I use? The exact coating and equipment documents must supply a usable speed or ceiling.
What temperature should the paint be? The exact product’s allowed paint, air, surface, and storage-temperature conditions. Do not import a range from another paint.
What PPE do I need? The exact SDS and workplace assessment decide. Read Sections 2, 7, and 8; do not infer glove, eye, ventilation, or respirator requirements from “latex,” “water-based,” or “low VOC.”
Can I remove a skin and strain the rest? Not under this guide. Skinned recovery is expressly refused.
Which mixer is faster? No accepted source establishes a comparative remix time or output for 43420 versus 43460. Choose only by documented coating permission, tool facts, drill requirement, and verified physical fit.
Will either mixer fit any quart or gallon can? No universal fit is claimed. The container class is documented, but opening, depth, clearance, headroom, and coating compatibility must be reconciled for the actual system.
Can I add water or solvent to help? Only when the exact paint label/TDS authorizes the exact material, amount, stage, and purpose. Never use addition as a spoilage or hard-settle rescue.
Can I use these mixers for epoxy? No.
History footnote
Ready-mixed paint moved color preparation from the painter’s bench into the factory and the resealable can. Sherwin-Williams traces Henry Sherwin’s work on reliable premixed paint from 1870 to the first official gallon of its premixed paint in 1880; the same history describes a decades-old sealed can being stirred back for a 1916 demonstration. The interesting continuity is not that every old can survives—it plainly does not—but that factory mixing never abolished the need to judge and stir the stored product at the point of use. The portable electric drill later turned that old can-floor problem into an accessory job.
