Is this the right tool for your job?

DO NOT FORCE THE FIT
  • Tile and any deep bed. A near-paint-thin film is nothing under ceramic or stone; those are deep square-notch trowel jobs (19070, 19050). This plate can't lay a mortar bed and isn't trying to.
  • The other three spreader coverings. The 19120 is the finest square, for vinyl. Rubber and plastic want the deeper fine square (19100); linoleum and asphalt want the U (19090); wallboard, metal, and ceramic-tile mastic want the V (19110). The gap to the 19100 is small in numbers and decisive in practice — see §5.
  • Whole vinyl floors. A 4-3/4" plate is repair and small-area width. A full sheet-vinyl or VCT floor is spread with the long vinyl trowels — the extra-long double-U 19067, the offset 19041 for corners, the room-scale 19060 — not by hand off a plate.

EXACT JOB METHODS FOR HYDE №19120

How the pros run it

01

Thin is the entire brief

Hold a consistent angle near 45° and pull straight; the 1/32" depth is meant to leave almost nothing standing. If you find yourself pressing harder to lay more adhesive, you have the wrong notch for the job.
02

Flash, then set

Vinyl and VCT adhesives want an open time — spread, wait for tack (or dry-to-touch, per the label), then lay the goods. The adhesive's own instructions call the window, not the clock.
03

One direction, then roll

Straight parallel combs so the air leaves the open channel ends, then roll the goods into full contact so the fine ridges vanish. Swirls trap loops that bubble a soft floor.
04

Old-floor asbestos boundary

When the new vinyl or VCT goes over an existing resilient floor, the pre-1980s caution rides on the old goods and any black cutback adhesive beneath them — test before disturbing on removal and prep. This spreader only lays the new bed, and lives on the spreading side of that line (carried from the line doc; no re-fetch).
05

Cleaning

Cold-rolled steel to keep: wash before the adhesive sets, dry it against rust, and guard the notch — the shallow 1/32" teeth are the easiest in the line to lose, and a nicked one throws the finest meter off first.

Asked at the counter

BUYER QUESTIONS ANSWERED BEFORE THE CART, NOT AFTER THE RETURN
What's this spreader for?
Vinyl and vinyl materials — sheet-vinyl repairs and VCT at hand scale — laid in the finest, thinnest adhesive bed Hyde meters.
What does "vinyl and vinyl materials" mean exactly?
We quote it exactly as Hyde prints it; the phrase recurs across the catalog and looks like a shortened older category term, so we flag the wording rather than reword it .
How is it different from the 19100?
Both are square notches, but the 19120 is shallower and finer (1/16" x 1/32" x 1/32", for vinyl) and the 19100 is a full 1/16" cube with more body (for rubber and plastic). Small numbers, real difference — vinyl telegraphs a bed that's too thick.
Can I do a whole vinyl floor with it?
Not well — 4-3/4" is repair width. Whole floors are spread with the long vinyl trowels (19067 for open fields, 19041 for corners, 19060 for a room).
Do I have to let the adhesive flash?
Yes — vinyl and VCT adhesives want an open time to tack (VCT often to dry-to-touch) before the goods go down; the label sets the window.
Over an old floor?
Spreading new adhesive is fine; but old resilient goods and black cutback adhesive can contain asbestos, so removing the old floor is a test-before-disturbing job first.
